  • Summer Gardens & Castles in Denmark & Sweden
American Horticultural Society Travel Study Program SUMMER GARDENS & CASTLES IN DENMARK & SWEDEN July 15–26, 2019 WITH AHS HOST TERRY HAYES AND TOUR LEADER ANTONIA LLOYD OWEN OF SPECIALTOURS Dear Friends of the American Horticultural Society, I personally invite you to join our latest AHS tour, “Summer Gardens & Castles in Denmark & Sweden,” July 15 to 26, 2019. The trip is so chock-full of delightful experiences that I had to omit many highlights from this brief overview, so be sure to peruse the full itinerary. We’ll begin in Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital and a gastronomic overachiever with a combined 19 Michelin stars. The United Nations’ World Happiness Report has rated Denmark number one — yes, the happiest place on Earth — three times in the past six years, and I’m sure this charming country will have the same effect on you. As the tour’s title indicates, spectacular gardens and equally fabulous castles and palaces will vie for your attention. For instance, while Sweden’s Sofiero Palace is impressive in its own right, I know you will be equally enchanted by its vaunted rhododendron gardens, which feature more than 400 different species and varieties. How often do you get to see a nearly extinct species? Among the many wonders we’ll behold at Gothenburg Botanical Garden — one of the largest and most beautiful in northern Europe — is the rare Easter Island tree, which no longer exists in its native environment. We’ll receive the royal treatment at Drottningholm Palace, the residence of the Swedish royal family. This magnificent Baroque palace, theater, park, and Chinese Pavilion constitutes one of Stockholm’s three World Heritage Sites.

SWEDEN: CENTRAL LAKES & ISLANDS OR WEST COAST BIKE PATH 7 day or 8 day inn-to-inn easy to moderate SELF GUIDED cycling tours Get a taste of Sweden that many visitors rarely experience, cycling in one of the most bike-friendly countries in Europe, with hundreds of kilometres of cycle paths and dedicated cycle routes. Summer (June to August) offers long days, short nights, comfortable temperatures; spring brings blooming wildflowers; autumn colourful trees, wild berries ripening, and cinnamon buns in many local bakeries. These easy to moderate self-guided cycling tours offer two very different sides of Sweden, both in landscape and culture. The first starts and ends in Stockholm and explores the rural landscapes and lush green meadows of Södermanland where there are few hills and the cycling is mostly flat. There are castles and palaces to visit, and time to explore the unique small towns and pretty lakes. Viking sites, ancient runestones and rock carvings are on the agenda too, as is the pretty village of Trosa on the Baltic Sea with its iconic red houses and water views. Alternatively, explore the West Coast, cycling the Kattegattleden Bike Path, Sweden’s first national bicycle trail, a 370-kilometre bicycle route alongside the Kattegat arm of the North Sea. The path crosses the Halland region, from Helsingborg to Gothenburg, past sandy beaches, through picturesque fishing villages and on small city bike paths with usually very little traffic. Explore historic places including the medieval town of Falkenberg, 13th Century Varberg Fortress, and the Iron Age Li burial site near Gothenburg.

  • What's the Difference Between a Castle and a Palace?
What's the Difference Between a Castle and a Palace? https://science.howstuffworks.com/engineering/architecture/castle-palace-difference.htm If you hear the word "castle" or the word "palace," you might picture the same kind of building for both: large, made of cut stones, probably with a tower or turret. And, of course, you're not entirely wrong, as those are features of both palaces and castles. So then why bother calling one royal building in the United Kingdom Buckingham Palace and another in the same country Windsor Castle? It turns out there is a difference, and you can see it pretty plainly in these two popular buildings. Castles were built throughout Europe and the Middle East primarily for protection of the king and his people. Some common features of castles include: • thick walls and heavy gates to keep invaders out • high towers for keeping a lookout over the surrounding lands • parapets or slits in the walls for archers to shoot with cover • gatehouses for admitting allies instead of allowing enemies into the castle • moats for defensive purposes Castles were (and sometimes still are, as in the case of Windsor Castle) residences for royalty. But they were also intended as defensive seats. Say you're a king who has taken a particular area over. Now you have to hold it. So you build a castle and staff it with soldiers and ministers to defend your conquered territory and ensure it remains part of your kingdom. Palaces, on the other hand, have no defensive purposes. They're meant for showing off — big time.
