King Carl XVI Gustaf – Sweden’s Head of State SWEDEN’S HEAD OF STATE. The Swedish Constitution Act rules that the “holder of Sweden’s throne is the nation’s Head of State”. Sweden is thus a constitutional monarchy. Sweden’s King, Carl XVI Gustaf, came to the throne in 1973, and is the 74th monarch. The organisation that surrounds the Head of State is called the Royal Court. Sweden is one of the oldest monarchies in the world.
