We welcome Dartford for a league game tonight for the first time in seven seasons. This is Dartford’s fifth year in National League South after relegation. In the five years since going down they’ve almost justified their tag as one of the favourites “THE DARTS” to go up, finishing third in 2017, and leading the table for much of 2018 before they lost out on the final day of the season to FACTFILE Havant, and lost the play-off semi final to Braintree. They started the season with a 4-1 defeat at Wealdstone, who nobody suspected would be as good as they appear to be at that stage. They then drew home games with St Albans and Havant and Waterlooville, lost at Chelmsford 4-0 in a game where they looked the better side in a goal-less first half but struggled to cope with the sending off of Jordan Wynter. They followed HONOURS that with a 3-1 defeat at Weymouth, got their sole win of the 4 x Southern League season at home to Braintree over Bank Holiday weekend and 1 x Isthmian League have since drawn 2-2 at Hungerford and on Saturday drew 1-1 1 x Isthmian Div 1 North at home to Hemel Hempstead. 3 x Southern Div 1 N/E It could be following the loss of long-term influential midfielder 11 x Kent Senior Cups Elliot Bradbrook they have struggled to gel, but the last three LUKE ALLEN games suggest their recovery is starting and there appears to be RECORDS no doubt they will finish much higher than their current league Most appearances: position. MANAGER’S VIEW “I’m elated to get a point; I think it should have been more, unfortunately that one lapse in focus cost us all three points.”

PLAYER’S VIEW - RIAN BRAY “It’s disappointing we couldn’t get all three points. We weren’t switched on after half time and they made us pay, but after two defeats last weekend we’ll take a point.”

FAN’S VIEW - MATT DAVISON “To come away disappointed with not winning is strange since they had the edge for long phases, but if anyone was going to nick a winner at the end it would have been us.”

OPPOSITION VIEW - MARK MOLESLEY (MANAGER) “Two debatable penalty decisions again. We had a lot of possession but we did not really make enough chances and ultimately paid the price for that.” 19 Brook Decorations Limited Riverside Business Centre, River Lawn Road, Tonbridge, Kent TN9 1EP.

PG0303_Tonbridge_HalfpageA5_v2.indd 1 06/02/2018 10:50 WE’LL NEVER PLAY YOU AGAIN! PART 5: LOVELL’S ATHLETIC Compiled by Wink Tomkinson Lovell’s Athletic, known as Newport’s “second club” were formed in 1918 by the Lovell’s confectionery company’s George Lovell and his son Harold. The football club won a string of trophies through the 1920s and 1930s, including the Western League, the Welsh League, three successive Welsh Amateur Cups with a number of players winning Welsh and Scottish international caps. For much of the Second World War, Lovell’s Athletic kept the football flag flying in Newport and their success continued into the post-war era. In 1945/46, the club embarked on an FA Cup run to the Third Round meeting Wolverhampton Wanderers. 10,000 people packed into Rexville and for 45 minutes the fans were in dreamland as Lovell’s took a 2-0 lead. But Wolves pulled themselves together after the break and ran out 4-2 winners, before winning the return leg 8-1. Lovell’s won the first of three successive Welsh League titles that season, and enjoyed perhaps their greatest season in 1947/48, when the club also re-entered the Southern League and won the Welsh Cup, beating Shrewsbury in the Final. Lovell’s were only the second Monmouthshire club to win the Welsh Cup and it was 32 years before Newport County emulated that success. But by then, Lovell’s Athletic were no more. The club had attempted unsuccessfully to become a Football League club at the end of the 1947/48 season through the old system of re-election. Thereafter honours became harder to find with a Welsh Amateur Cup triumph in 1954, and another appearance in the Welsh Cup final in 1959. A final Welsh League title was won in 1965/66, but by then, the days of competing in the Southern League too, were long gone. Crowds had dwindled, the cost of running the club fell increasingly on the supporters; club, and Rexville, which had hosted so many memorable matches over the years, was an increasingly valuable asset for development. In May 1969 Lovell’s Athletic were wound up, their final match taking place in the Welsh League at Pembroke Borough.
