The Lord's Taverners help provide outdoor play space for the Collett School

26th Feb 2018 This story shows the community spirit that there is in Hemel Hempstead.

Anna Patsalides, a solicitor at Hemel Hempstead Town FC’s sponsors Underwoods Solicitors is Vice Chair of Governors at Collett School, while partners Kerry Underwood and Robert Males are active Lord’s Taverners. Hemel Hempstead Town FC support Collett School and will be presenting a cheque at the home game on 24 March.

Anna Patsalides said:

“I am very proud to act as Vice Chair for Collett School. The donation from the Lord Taveners will be invaluable to the school. Collett School is one of the lowest funded schools in the county despite the fact that it caters for children with complex needs and significant disabilities.

Grants such as these mean so much to the school and to the pupils and I cannot thank the Lord Taveners enough for their kind generosity”

The Lord's Taverners were joined by presenter Matt Floyd at The Collett School for Special Educational Needs in Hemel Hempstead last Friday, 23 February, to officially open their brand new outdoor play space. The new facility was made possible thank to a £20,000 grant awarded to the school by the charity.

The Collett School for Special Educational Needs is Hertfordshire's only all-through special educational needs school, which caters for nearly 130 children with learning disabilities and complex needs including MLD, cerebral palsy, Tourrette's syndrome and Batton's disease. All students have significant disabilities, with many having Down's syndrome and half having autism. They also cater for pupils with extremely rare disorders (one of whom is one of only two in the world with that diagnosis).

The new outdoor play equipment will help pupils to develop communication and physical skills and gain a boost confidence, improve physical and mental health, while helping them develop emotional responses.

The grant, and subsequent installation of the equipment, was made possible thanks to the support of players of the People’s Postcode Lottery (PPL). Players of PPL play with their postcodes to win cash prizes while raising money for charities and good causes across Great Britain and internationally, and their support of the Lord’s Taverners has helped provide this new outdoor play space for the Collett School.

Head of Operations at The Collett School, Gillian Lawton, said: "There are so many positive impacts that this new outdoor space is going to have on the school. It will provide happiness, confidence, growth, inspiration and will improve opportunities in life going forward. Thank you always seems such a small phrase. The difference that this outdoor play space will make is phenomenal."

Sky Sports presenter and broadcaster, and Lord's Taverner Matt Floyd, added: "Today we've opened this outdoor play space, which the kids can utilise from now on. It gives them a chance to get outside without leaving the school. It's really rewarding for me to come and see something like this first-hand as you get to see the kids using the new equipment and it really hits home just how the money we raise is put to such a good use."

TUDORS WALKING FOOTBALL SIDE Hemel's Happy Feet played their Return Fixture on Saturday 24th February against Many Shades of Grey from Havant & Waterlooville at Cavendish School prior to the corresponding 1st team game at Vauxhall Road. Having now been together for about 8 months the team were far more fluent this time round. Hemel took an early lead in the first quarter but Many shades of Grey quickly responded by scoring twice to take the lead. As in the previous game in Hampshire on November 11th the Tudors got better as the game went on scoring three times in the second half to record a 4-2 victory. Hemel's Happy Feet were clearly the better side having also had two goals disallowed and hitting the woodwork 4 times. At the end of the game both sets of players headed up to Vauxhall Road to watch the first team game after first taking in the hospitality provided by the football club

HEMEL HEMPSTEAD TOWN F.C.

Annual Primary Schools 6-A-Side was held on Thursday 22nd February where 6 schools took part in the boys competition and three schools in the girls competition. Both competitions were eagerly contested with some great football played. In the boys competition St Albert the Great beat South Hill in their semi-final and Hobletts Manor beat Leverstock Green in their semi-final. In a great final the two sides could not separated during normal time and the game went to penalties with St Albert the Great coming out on top.

In the girls competition the top two sides in the group stage met again in the final. The final was played between Hobletts Manor and Bovingdon. The game was a very evenly contested final with both sides trying to get the elusive winning goal. The goal was eventually scored by Bovingdon and it turned out to be the winner and the score remained 1-0. This was a very good final with Hobletts Manor pushing Bovingdon all the way to the very end.

The two winning schools, St Albert the Great and Bovingdon will now represent the club at the National League regional finals 6-A-Side competition at Boreham Wood on Tuesday 20th March. We wish the very best of luck to the two schools.

Pictured is the winning boys team from St Albert The Great Catholic Primary School.
