  • Why the Oriental Religions Spread.*
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.ukbrought to you by CORE provided by OpenSIUC WHY THE ORIENTAL RELIGIONS SPREAD.* BY FRANZ CUMONT. WHEN, during the fourth century, the weakened empire split asunder like an overburdened scale whose beam is broken, this political divorce only perpetuated a moral separation that had existed for a long time. The opposition between the Greco-Oriental and the Latin worlds manifests itself especially in religion and in the attitude taken by the central power toward it. Occidental paganism was almost exclusively Latin under the empire. After the annexation of Spain, Gaul and Brittany the old Iberian, Celtic and other religions were unable to keep up the un- equal struggle against the more advanced religion of the conquerors. The marvelous rapidity with which the literature of the civilizing Romans was accepted by the subject peoples has frequently been pointed out. Its influence was felt in the temples as well as in the forum ; it transformed the prayers to the gods as well as the con- versation between men. Besides, it was part of the political pro- gram of the Csesars to make the adoption of the Roman divinities general, and the government imposed the rules of its sacerdotal law as well as the principles of its public and civil law upon its new subjects. The municipal laws prescribed the election of pontiffs and augurs in common with the judicial duumvirs. In Gaul druid- ism, with its oral traditions embodied in long poems, perished and disappeared less on account of the police measures directed against it than in consequence of its voluntary relinquishment by the Celts, as soon as they came under the ascendency of Latin culture.

  • ABSTRACT Toward a Protestant Theology of Celibacy: Protestant Thought in Dialogue with John Paul II's Theology of the Body Ru
ABSTRACT Toward a Protestant Theology of Celibacy: Protestant Thought in Dialogue with John Paul II’s Theology of the Body Russell Joseph Hobbs, M.A., D.Min. Mentor: Ralph C. Wood, Ph.D. This dissertation examines the theology of celibacy found both in John Paul II’s writings and in current Protestant theology, with the aim of developing a framework and legitimation for a richer Protestant theology of celibacy. Chapter 1 introduces the thesis. Chapter 2 reviews the Protestant literature on celibacy under two headings: first, major treatments from the Protestant era, including those by Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Wesley, various Shakers, and authors from the English Reformation; second, treatments from 1950 to the present. The chapter reveals that modern Protestants have done little theological work on celibacy. Self-help literature for singles is common and often insightful, but it is rarely theological. Chapter 3 synthesizes the best contemporary Protestant thinking on celibacy under two headings: first, major treatments by Karl Barth, Max Thurian, and Stanley Grenz; second, major Protestant themes in the theology of celibacy. The fourth chapter describes the foundation of John Paul II’s theology of human sexuality and includes an overview of his life and education, an evaluation of Max Scheler’s influence, and a review of Karol Wojtyla’s Love and Responsibility and The Acting Person . Chapter 5 treats two topics. First, it describes John Paul II’s, Theology of the Body , and more particularly the section entitled “Virginity for the Sake of the Kingdom.” There he examines Jesus’ instruction in Matt 19:11-12, celibacy as vocation, the superiority of celibacy to marriage, celibacy as redemption of the body, Paul’s instructions in 1 Cor 7, and virginity as human destiny.

  • Wedding (And Divorcing) the Brides of Christ Libby O'neil Reed College the Protestant Reformation Wrought Comprehensive Change
Wedding (and Divorcing) the Brides of Christ Libby O’Neil Reed College The Protestant Reformation wrought comprehensive change across early modern Europe, sparking theological debates that continue today. Although the Reformation can be traced through splintering denominations and theological heterodoxies, recent scholarship has highlighted marriage politics as a potent signpost of change. During the Reformation, marriage, once a private contract between two members of a homogenous religious community, was transformed into a highly-regulated and deeply-gendered change of political status in both Catholic and Protestant communities. At the same time, as Protestants and Catholics defined themselves against each other, they revised the details of the marital contract in the service of forging confessional identity.1 However, not only marriageable men and women bore the consequences of these changes – the transformation of marriage during the Reformation was equally pronounced for the so-called “brides of Christ,” the nuns and sisters who swore to abstain from marriage altogether. Indeed, Catholic nuns and sisters, generally referred to as women religious, became battlegrounds for arguments about sex. Although the implications of the Reformation for women religious have been considered at length by other scholars, this paper will examine the fate of the “brides of Christ” as sexually embodied brides, with a geographical focus on Reformation Germany. I contend that the marital discourse surrounding women religious during the Reformation was not incidental to their fate – the status of the “brides of Christ” was inextricably linked to the status of earthly marriage. By examining this connection, I hope to illuminate how women’s bodies, and especially the sexualized bodies of women religious, became central to theological and 1 Ulrike Strasser, State of Virginity, (Ann Arbor, University of Michigan Press, 2004), 34-35.

It investigates the fate of celibacy in the Protestant tradition after the Reformation, when critics of the Catholic Church dislodged the requirement of a chaste priesthood and dissolved the monasteries. In instigating these changes, reformers overturned a centuries-old hierarchy that ranked celibacy above marriage. For many Protestant groups, matrimony came to take on special importance; not merely an outlet for concupiscence or a way to increase the church, matrimony became an earthly reflection of the heavenly union between God and his creation, offering spiritually-edifying lessons about the nature of Christ’s love. However, as this dissertation shows, even though celibacy lost its place as an ecclesiastical institution within Protestantism, it still remained a feature of Christian life that Protestants would grapple with for centuries. Despite reformers’ dismissal of celibacy and elevation of marriage, many believers continued to insist that singleness presented a meaningful spiritual vocation.

He had strong anticipation of facing trouble in the city, and sure enough troubles came his way. These difficulties would change the direction of his life. His plans for the future would be altered drastically from what he had expressed earlier in Romans 15 and else- where. But God remained in control of Paul’s life, and sustained him through these turbulent years at the end of his life. 8.1.0 Paul’s final period of ministry This phase of Paul’s life covers the time of his arrival back in Jerusalem around 57 AD at the end of the third missionary journey to his martyrdom at the hands of Emperor Nero in the mid-sixties. The Acts narrative from chapter twenty-one through twenty-eight provides the greatest description of the first major segment of Jerusalem to Roman house arrest.

LIFE IN UISG 43 PREFACE n this edition of the UISG Bulletin, we would like to offer a new perspective I on those religious vows which constitute the character of our discipleship of Jesus and of our work in building up his Kingdom on this earth. Having remained silent about these for several years – as one does with those things which one takes for granted or no longer requires as part of a renewal – we have begun to explore them in greater depth as a part of our identity, of this particular way of living out Christianity, which identifies us within the Church. Rather than offering a systematic presentation, we singled out stimulating yet specific contributions that may bring something new to the discussion or will at least re-examine that which is already familiar to us.
