Yeats- ABSTRACT Michael Dununett, Neil Tennant, and Crispin Wright all appeal to a priori re­ strictions on a philosophical explanation of linguistic competence (the “theory of meaning”) to criticize classical logic and semantics. They also use these restrictions to defend verificationsim. In the negative part of my project I uncover interesting structural analogies between the Dummettian arguments for logical revision to show that they all require the truth of a stronger, and less plausible, form of verificationism than even the logical positivists were willing to countenance. This result, I argue, genuinely is a modus tollens from which we should conclude that the explanatory demands Dummett and others place on the theory of meaning are mistaken. I then draw from the linguistic, lexicographic, and psychological Hterature to undermine the Dummettian view that an explanation of competence should recursively correlate dispositions necessary and sufficient for grasp of meaning with the aspects of mean­ ings generated by a compositional semantics. Thus is eliminated the Dummettian impetus to identify such dispositions with the ability to recognize verifications. In the positive discussion I: (1) characterize and defend a conception of tacit knowledge which renders the postulation of the mental reality of classical semantics both explanatory and plausible, (2) show that many traditional philosophical ques­ tions concerning the epistemology of language can and should be recast as questions concerning how the theory of sentence meaning (compositional semantics) inter­ acts with the theory of word meaning (lexical semantics), and (3) defend a roughly Davidsonian alternative to Dummett's theory of grasp of meaning. 11 Dedicated to Enuly Beck 111 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I wish to thank my adviser, Neil Tennant. For many students, the most difficult thing about graduate school are the long periods of time between receiving positive feedback, encouragement, and suggestions for research avenues. The most excit­ ing philosophical conversation I have had has been over the course of a few years and in weekly installments over lunch with Stewart. The positions I defend owe much more to Stewart’s input than I have been able to note. My practice of taking empiri­ cal linguistic semantics seriously in the context of philosophical “theory of meaning” debates owes its genesis to Stewart’s encouragement. The non-foundationalist phi­ losophy of logic presupposed in the entire monograph is Stewart’s. I thank William Taschek. At certain times I have needed someone to admonish me with Kripke’s phrase, “there is no mathematical replacement for philosophy.” If Neil introduced me to the joy of using and reflecting on formalisms, and Stewart the joys of an Aristotelian methodology in metaphysics and the philosophy of language, William constantly encouraged me to reflect on the limitations of formalisms and empirical theories and results. As with Stewart, the content of this monograph owes much to William. The bits of Quine and Davidson I love are Quine and Davidson as taught by WiUiam. The whole strategy of using the logical positivist’s discussions IV of verifiability to critically explore Dummettian anti-realism was suggested to me by William. Finally, philosophical conversations with William have been invaluable. I thank Craige Roberts. Knowing the meaning of a sentence requires knowing what it would be for that sentence to be true, 2. All that is involved in knowing the meaning of a sentence is knowing how to use that sentence correctly, and 3. Given 1. and 2., the assumption that all true sentences are verifiable al­ lows us to provide the best explanation of knowledge of the meaning of a sentence. Then,^ Dummett goes on to argue that 4. The assumption that all true sentences are verifiable provides strong evi­ dence for the incorrectness of classical truth conditional semantics, as well as evidence for the correctness of intuitionistic constructive semantics. In this chapter I shall only be concerned with explicating the first three of these claims, and will not address the fourth until Chapter 3. ^In some of his earlier work (e.g.- (Dummett (1959)) Dummett writes as if the notion of truth should be replaced with that of verifiability, but came to regard this as infelicitous. For example, On the way of putting it I adapted, one first proposes explaining meaning, not in terms of truth, but in terms of the condition for correct assertion, and then declares that, for statements whose meaning is so explained, the only awimissible notion of truth will be one under which a statement is true when and only when we are able to arrive at a position in which we may correctly assert it. But, in that case, it would have been better first to state the restriction on the application of ‘true’, and then to have held that the meaning of a statement is given by the condition for it to be true in Uun, restricted, sense of W , (Dummett, (1978, p. xxii)) Throughout, we shall follow Dummett's later usage, presenting him as seeking to characterize truth a certain way, rather than replacing truth with something else. For Dummett, the claim that knowledge of the truth conditions of a sentence is necessary for understanding that sentence is to be explicated with a “theory of reference” for the natural language in which the understood sentence occurs. Such a theory consists of a recursive syntax and compositional semantics; then, “what it would be for a sentence to be true” is taken to be the truth conditions assigned by the semantics to the sentence in question. The claim that correct use is necessary and sufficient for knowledge of meaning is to be explicated with a “theory of sense” added to the theory of reference. This theory will correlate with the truth conditions of the semantics a set of dispositions,^ possession of which are necessary and sufficient for understanding the natural language sentence correlated with that truth condition by the theory of reference.^ Finally, Dummett holds that these dispositions are a speaker’s ability to recognize verifications of the sentences.

My contention is that many readers misunderstand this paper. My method for showing this will be, first, to give a brief summary of the surface structure, and the core concepts, of “Mental Events”. I will then begin to canvas exemplars of the main lines of (alleged) objection to what “Mental Events” has been supposed to contend. I intend to argue that these objections misunderstand either Davidson’s conclusions, or his arguments, or they require material additional to the position that Davidson actually lays out and argues for in “Mental Events” in order to follow. In the latter case I shall attempt to show that these additions are not contentions which Davidson shares by referencing further materials from Davidson’s work.

    Dual Categorization and the Role of Aristotle's Categories Mark Ressler August 6, 2008 Abstract In the Categories, Aristotle addresses two different cases of dual cat- egorization, cases in which the same thing might appear in two different categories: relatives and secondary substances in the first case, qualities and relatives in the second. His treatment of these two cases is markedly different. Ackrill thinks dual categorization poses a dilemma for Aris- totle's project as a whole, but I argue that there is a dilemma only on particular understandings of Aristotle's purpose in compiling the list of categories. I investigate various interpretations of the categories to find one that explains Aristotle's reactions to dual categorization, and sug- gest an interpretation of the peculiar four-fold system of classification in Chapter 2. Can one thing appear in two separate categories? It seems to me that this question cannot be answered without determining the purpose for which the categories are established. If such dual categorization causes no problems ac- cording to the intended purpose of the categorial scheme, then there seems to be no reason for complaint. This is the approach that I take with regard to Aris- totle's categorial scheme in the Categories. In this work, Aristotle addresses two separate instances of dual categorization with regard to his list of ten cate- gories, but his reaction in these cases is surprisingly different, taking great pains to avoid dual categorization in one case, but showing a marked lack of concern in the other case. This indifference in the second case leads John Ackrill to criticize Aristotle's categorial project in general; however, it seems to me that if Aristotle's reaction to dual categorization in one case seems contrary to some conception of Aristotle's purpose in developing the categorial scheme, then per- haps that conception of the purpose of the Categories may not be a conception that Aristotle himself held.

    CHAPTER 1 The Importance of Categorization Many readers, I suspect, will take the title of this book as suggesting that women, fire , and dangerous things have something in common-say, that women are fiery and dangerous. Most feminists I've mentioned it to have loved the title for that reason, though some have hated it for the same rea­ son. But the chain of inference-from conjunction to categorization to commonality-is the norm. The inference is based on the common idea of what it means to be in the same category: things are categorized together on the basis of what they have in common. The idea that categories are defined by common properties is not only our everyday folk theory of what a category is , it is also the principaltechnicaltheory-one that has been with us for more than two thousand years . The classical view that categories are based on shared properties is not entirely wrong. We often do categorize things on that basis. But that is only a small part of the story. In recent years it has become clear that categorization is far more complex than thaI. A new theory of categoriza­ tion, called prototype theory, has emerged. It shows that human categori­ zation is based on principles that extend far beyond those envisioned in the classical theory. One of our goals is to survey the complexities of the way people really categorize. For example, the title of this book was in­ spired by the Australian aboriginal language Dyirbal, which haS a cate­ gory, balan, that actually includes women, fire , and dangerous things.

BRONS ABSTRACT: If we distinguish phenomenal effects from their noumenal causes, the former being our conceptual(ized) experiences, the latter their grounds or causes in reality ‘as it is’ independent of our experience, then two contradictory positions with regards to the relationship between these two can be distinguished: either phenomena are identical with their noumenal causes, or they are not. Davidson is among the most influential modern defenders of the former position, metaphysical non-dualism. Dharmakīrti’s strict distinction between ultimate and conventional reality, on the other hand, may be one of the most rigorously elaborated theories of the opposite position, metaphysical dualism. Despite this fundamental difference, their theories about the connection between phenomena and their noumenal causes are surprisingly similar in important respects. Both Dharmakīrti in his theory of ‘apoha’ and Davidson in his theory of ‘triangulation’ argued that the content of words or concepts depends on a process involving at least two communicating beings and shared noumenal stimuli. The main point of divergence is the nature of classification, but ultimately Dharmakīrti’s and Davidson’s conclusions on the noumenal-phenomenal relationship turn out to be complementary more than contradictory, and an integrative reconstruction suggests a ‘middle path’ between dualism and non-dualism. I aim to redress these shortcomings. The body of the work begins with an exploration of Leibniz’s proposed analysis of representation (Chapter 2). Here I argue that on this analysis representation consists in a kind of structural correspondence— roughly an isomorphism—between representation and thing represented.     APA Eastern Division New York December 2009 LATE MEDIEVAL NOMINALISM AND NONVERIDICAL CONCEPTS Claude Panaccio University of Quebec at Montreal Content externalism, as promoted by Hilary Putnam, Tyler Burge and many other prominent analytic philosophers in the last three or four decades, is the thesis that the content of our thoughts at a given moment is not uniquely determined by our internal states at that moment. In its causalist versions, it has often been presented as a deep revolution in philosophy of mind. Yet a number of medievalists (e.g. Peter King, Calvin Normore, Gyula Klima, and myself) have recently stressed the presence of significant externalist tendencies in fourteenth century nominalism, especially in William of Ockham and John Buridan. I have tried to round up the case for this interpretation of Ockham in a forthcoming paper entitled “ Ockham‟s externalism ”. Let me simply mention here, to give the most salient example, that Ockham insists, in Book II of his Commentary on the Sentences, that an intuitive cognition, whether intellectual or sensitive, always has a determinate singular thing as its object, although taken in itself it resembles a plurality of singular things, and that what fixes which singular object it is that a given intuitive cognition is a cognition of, is not the internal shape of this cognition, but which determinate thing caused it [Reportatio II, quest. 12-13, Op. Theol. V, 287-288]. Two intuitive cognitions, then, could be maximally similar to each other to the point of being indistinguishable by an observing angel ; yet, they would have different singular objects if they were caused by different singular things.

The rigidity, or lack thereof, and the homogeneity, or lack thereof, of concepts, are only two of their characteristics that have been debated. These issues are reviewed in this paper, namely: 1) does a concept represent its referent(s), or is it a free creation of the mind?; 2) can a concept be analyzed in parts or elements?; 3) must a concept be general, i.e., refer to a category or a type, or can it refer to a single object, physical or mental?; 4) are concepts as clearly delimited as terms are? Are concepts voiceless terms?; and, 5) what do terms contribute to an individual’s and a community’s conceptual richness? As regards the relationship of concepts with their referents in the stage of formation, it seems reasonable to conclude that said relationship may be close in some concepts, less close in others, and lacking altogether in some cases.

Introduction In this paper, we outline an approach to giving extensional truth-theoretic semantics for what have traditionally been seen as opaque sentential contexts.2 If the approach outlined here is correct, it resolves a longstanding complex of prob- lems in metaphysics, the philosophy of mind and the philosophy of language. We take as our starting point the requirement that any semantics for a natural language be compositional, that is, that it provide an interpretation of each of the infinity of sentences in it on the basis of a finite primitive vocabulary and a finite number of rules. At least since Frege,3 it has been recognized that sentences such as (1), (1) Galileo said that the earth moves, present a prima facie difficulty for the project of providing a compositional se- mantics for natural languages. A compositional semantics for a fragment of En- glish which does not include sentences of indirect discourse, psychological attitude sentences (henceforth ‘attitude sentences’), modal sentences, sentences about entailments, and similar constructions can be given straightforwardly in the form of a first-order interpretive truth theory for the language.4 The approach breaks down when we turn to sentences such as (1), whose truth value is not a function of the truth value of the embedded sentence ‘the earth moves’. In general, one term can be substituted for another in ‘that-clauses’salva veritate only if they are synonymous. Perhaps the most popular solution to the problem of providing a compositional semantics for natural languages aims to exploit this fact by treat- ing that-clauses as referring to intensional entities–entities (at least as) as finely individuated as the meanings of sentences.

    On the Propositional Attitudes KEITH COLEMAN The University of Kansas An adequate account of the nature of the so called 'propositional attitudes' has long been sought by philosophers of mind, and most theories which have been proposed have suffered from certain logical or epistemological defects or have been limited in scope. The issues centering around the nature of beliefs, desires, and the other attitudes pertain to two principal areas of investigation: the explication of a (psychological) theory concerning the objects of the propositional attitudes and the analysis of the logical structure of such sentences as those with the form 'A believes that p' or 'A wishes (desires) that p.' My main concern in this paper is with problems associated with the latter endeavor. Such problems in an important respect are more basic, for a successful attempt at characterizing the typical form of sentences that express propositional attitudes must be made before any theory about the objects of beliefs, desires, and other intentions can possibly take shape.1 The sentence "Jones believes that there are unicorns" has the typical form of the members of a class of sentences each one consisting of one or more names or denoting phrases followed by an intentional idiom of the kind 'believes that', 'desires that', 'wishes that', 'hopes that', 'fears that', 'says that', 'wonders whether', etc. followed by a complete sentence. Such complex sentences when taken as assertions have usually been seen as expressing a relationship (or a propositional attitude) of one kind or another between an object (usually a person) and a belief, desire, wish, hope, or other intention (or object of the propositional attitude).
