Austin State University [email protected] A well-known scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the Earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise." The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the tortoise standing on?" "You're very clever, young man," said the old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down!" Introduction “New Pragmatism” attacks the very foundation of pragmatic thought by denying that we may ever have any definitive experience. As what we are experiencing is up for grabs, we can never know any situation that we may encounter, and we are left to ground both our knowledge and our values in our language games alone. This paper argues that this set of claims is founded on two errors, one regarding the nature of language games and the other regarding the nature of deconstruction. The “Old Pragmatism,” by way of contrast, is non-essentialist but not anti- essentialist, and it resolves the problem of how we might know “the situation,” given the subjectivity of our observations and the contingencies of our language games, by suggesting that our experiences can be understood as existing in, and constituted by, the totality of their particular instances or modes at the time of inquiry. -

METAPHYSICS AND THE WORLD CRISIS Victor B. Brezik, CSB (The Basilian Teacher, Vol. VI, No. 2, November, 1961) Several years ago on one of his visits to Toronto, M. Jacques Maritain, when he was informed that I was teaching a course in Metaphysics, turned to me and inquired with an obvious mixture of humor and irony indicated by a twinkle in the eyes: “Are there some students here interested in Metaphysics?” The implication was that he himself was finding fewer and fewer university students with such an interest. The full import of M. Maritain’s question did not dawn upon me until later. In fact, only recently did I examine it in a wider context and realize its bearing upon the present world situation. By a series of causes ranging from Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason in the 18th century and the rise of Positive Science in the 19th century, to the influence of Pragmatism, Logical Positivism and an absorbing preoccupation with technology in the 20th century, devotion to metaphysical studies has steadily waned in our universities. The fact that today so few voices are raised to deplore this trend is indicative of the desuetude into which Metaphysics has fallen. Indeed, a new school of philosophers, having come to regard the study of being as an entirely barren field, has chosen to concern itself with an analysis of the meaning of language. (Volume XXXIV of Proceedings of the American Catholic Philosophical Association deals with Analytical Philosophy.) Yet, paradoxically, while an increasing number of scholars seem to be losing serious interest in metaphysical studies, the world crisis we are experiencing today appears to be basically a crisis in Metaphysics. -

PRAGMATISM AND ITS IMPLICATIONS: Pragmatism is a philosophy that has had its chief development in the United States, and it bears many of the characteristics of life on the American continent.. It is connected chiefly with the names of William James (1842-1910) and John Dewey. It has appeared under various names, the most prominent being pragmatism, instrumentalism, and experimentalism. While it has had its main development in America, similar ideas have been set forth in England by Arthur Balfour and by F. C. S. Schiller, and in Germany by Hans Vaihingen. WHAT PRAGMATISM IS Pragmatism is an attitude, a method, and a philosophy which places emphasis upon the practical and the useful or upon that which has satisfactory consequences. The term pragmatism comes from a Greek word pragma, meaning "a thing done," a fact, that which is practical or matter-of-fact. Pragmatism uses the practical consequences of ideas and beliefs as a standard for determining their value and truth. William James defined pragmatism as "the attitude of looking away from first things, principles, 'categories,' supposed necessities; and of looking towards last things, fruits, consequences, facts." Pragmatism places greater emphasis upon method and attitude than upon a system of philosophical doctrine. It is the method of experimental inquiry carried into all realms of human experience. Pragmatism is the modern scientific method taken as the basis of a philosophy. Its affinity is with the biological and social sciences, however, rather than with the mathematical and physical sciences. The pragmatists are critical of the systems of philosophy as set forth in the past. -

Why Information Matters Luciano Floridi When we use a computer, its performance seems to degrade progres- sively. This is not a mere impression. Over the years of owning a par- ticular machine, it will get sluggish. Sometimes this slowdown is caused by hardware faults, but more often the culprit is software: programs get more complicated, as more features are added and as old bugs are patched (or not), and greater demands are placed on resources by new programs running in the background. After a while, even rebooting the computer does not restore performance, and the only solution is to upgrade to a new machine. Philosophy can be a bit like a computer getting creakier. It starts well, dealing with significant and serious issues that matter to anyone. Yet, in time, it can get bloated and bogged down and slow. Philosophy begins to care less about philosophical questions than about philosophers’ questions, which then consume increasing amounts of intellectual attention. The problem with philosophers’ questions is not that they are impenetrable to outsiders — although they often are, like any internal game — but that whatever the answers turn out to be, assuming there are any, they do not matter, because nobody besides philosophers could care about the ques- tions in the first place. This is an old problem. In the sixteenth century, the French scholar and doctor François Rabelais satirized scholastic philosophy in his Gargantua and Pantagruel. In a catalogue of 139 invented book titles that he attributes to the library of the Abbey of St. Victor, he lists such titles as “The Niddy-noddy of the Satchel-loaded Seekers, by Friar Blindfastatis” and “The Raver and idle Talker in cases of Conscience.” Centuries later, we seem to be back to the same problem. -

Logique & Analyse 196 (2006), x–x THE LOGIC OF BEING INFORMED ∗ LUCIANO FLORIDI Abstract One of the open problems in the philosophy of information is wheth- er there is an information logic (IL), different from epistemic (EL) and doxastic logic (DL), which formalises the relation “a is in- formed that p” (Iap) satisfactorily. In this paper, the problem is solved by arguing that the axiom schemata of the normal modal logic (NML) KTB (also known as B or Br or Brouwer's system) are well suited to formalise the relation of “being informed”. After having shown that IL can be constructed as an informational read- ing of KTB, four consequences of a KTB-based IL are explored: information overload; the veridicality thesis (Iap ! p); the relation between IL and EL; and the Kp ! Bp principle or entailment prop- erty, according to which knowledge implies belief. Although these issues are discussed later in the article, they are the motivations be- hind the development of IL. Introduction As anyone acquainted with modal logic (ML) knows, epistemic logic (EL) formalises the relation “a knows that p” (Kap), whereas doxastic logic (DL) formalises the relation “a believes that p” (Bap). One of the open problems in the philosophy of information (Floridi, 2004c) is whether there is also an information logic (IL), different from EL and from DL, that formalises the relation “a is informed that p” (Iap) equally well. The keyword here is “equally” not “well”. One may contend that EL and DL do not capture the relevant relations very well or even not well at all. -

The proper meaning of this term necessar- ily depends on epistemological context. Moreover, its intra-theoretical and polysemic potential has led the term to be used in multiples senses, ranging from the contexts of cognitive psychology to library science; however, the analysis offered herein underscores the need to define the term more precisely for use in li- brary science and associated fields, so that its meaning is neither degraded nor over-simplified when building useful explicative models. Religious Fundamentalism in Eight Muslim‐
JOURNAL for the SCIENTIFIC STUDY of RELIGION Religious Fundamentalism in Eight Muslim-Majority Countries: Reconceptualization and Assessment MANSOOR MOADDEL STUART A. KARABENICK Department of Sociology Combined Program in Education and Psychology University of Maryland University of Michigan To capture the common features of diverse fundamentalist movements, overcome etymological variability, and assess predictors, religious fundamentalism is conceptualized as a set of beliefs about and attitudes toward religion, expressed in a disciplinarian deity, literalism, exclusivity, and intolerance. Evidence from representative samples of over 23,000 adults in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and Turkey supports the conclusion that fundamentalism is stronger in countries where religious liberty is lower, religion less fractionalized, state structure less fragmented, regulation of religion greater, and the national context less globalized. Among individuals within countries, fundamentalism is linked to religiosity, confidence in religious institutions, belief in religious modernity, belief in conspiracies, xenophobia, fatalism, weaker liberal values, trust in family and friends, reliance on less diverse information sources, lower socioeconomic status, and membership in an ethnic majority or dominant religion/sect. We discuss implications of these findings for understanding fundamentalism and the need for further research. Keywords: fundamentalism, Islam, Christianity, Sunni, Shia, Muslim-majority countries. Date approved: 07/12/2016 iii ABSTRACT The main aim of this dissertation is to offer, and to defend, an interpretation of Donald Davidson’s classic paper “Mental Events” which interpretation I take to be identical to Davidson’s intended interpretation. My contention is that many readers misunderstand this paper. My method for showing this will be, first, to give a brief summary of the surface structure, and the core concepts, of “Mental Events”. I will then begin to canvas exemplars of the main lines of (alleged) objection to what “Mental Events” has been supposed to contend. I intend to argue that these objections misunderstand either Davidson’s conclusions, or his arguments, or they require material additional to the position that Davidson actually lays out and argues for in “Mental Events” in order to follow. In the latter case I shall attempt to show that these additions are not contentions which Davidson shares by referencing further materials from Davidson’s work. -

Dual Categorization and the Role of Aristotle's Categories Mark Ressler August 6, 2008 Abstract In the Categories, Aristotle addresses two different cases of dual cat- egorization, cases in which the same thing might appear in two different categories: relatives and secondary substances in the first case, qualities and relatives in the second. His treatment of these two cases is markedly different. Ackrill thinks dual categorization poses a dilemma for Aris- totle's project as a whole, but I argue that there is a dilemma only on particular understandings of Aristotle's purpose in compiling the list of categories. I investigate various interpretations of the categories to find one that explains Aristotle's reactions to dual categorization, and sug- gest an interpretation of the peculiar four-fold system of classification in Chapter 2. Can one thing appear in two separate categories? It seems to me that this question cannot be answered without determining the purpose for which the categories are established. If such dual categorization causes no problems ac- cording to the intended purpose of the categorial scheme, then there seems to be no reason for complaint. This is the approach that I take with regard to Aris- totle's categorial scheme in the Categories. In this work, Aristotle addresses two separate instances of dual categorization with regard to his list of ten cate- gories, but his reaction in these cases is surprisingly different, taking great pains to avoid dual categorization in one case, but showing a marked lack of concern in the other case. This indifference in the second case leads John Ackrill to criticize Aristotle's categorial project in general; however, it seems to me that if Aristotle's reaction to dual categorization in one case seems contrary to some conception of Aristotle's purpose in developing the categorial scheme, then per- haps that conception of the purpose of the Categories may not be a conception that Aristotle himself held. -

CHAPTER 1 The Importance of Categorization Many readers, I suspect, will take the title of this book as suggesting that women, fire , and dangerous things have something in common-say, that women are fiery and dangerous. Most feminists I've mentioned it to have loved the title for that reason, though some have hated it for the same rea son. But the chain of inference-from conjunction to categorization to commonality-is the norm. The inference is based on the common idea of what it means to be in the same category: things are categorized together on the basis of what they have in common. The idea that categories are defined by common properties is not only our everyday folk theory of what a category is , it is also the principaltechnicaltheory-one that has been with us for more than two thousand years . The classical view that categories are based on shared properties is not entirely wrong. We often do categorize things on that basis. But that is only a small part of the story. In recent years it has become clear that categorization is far more complex than thaI. A new theory of categoriza tion, called prototype theory, has emerged. It shows that human categori zation is based on principles that extend far beyond those envisioned in the classical theory. One of our goals is to survey the complexities of the way people really categorize. For example, the title of this book was in spired by the Australian aboriginal language Dyirbal, which haS a cate gory, balan, that actually includes women, fire , and dangerous things. -
