    Religious Studies Center Style Guide, 1 October 2018 Authors who submit manuscripts for potential publication should generally follow the guidelines in The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed. (Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 2017) and Style Guide for Editors and Writers, 5th ed. (Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2013). This style guide summarizes the main principles in the other style guides and lists a few exceptions to their guidelines. Formatting 1. Use double-spacing throughout the manuscript and the endnotes. Use one-inch margins, and insert page numbers at the bottom of the page. Use a Times New Roman 12-point font for both the body of the manuscript and the notes. Use only one space after periods. 2. If you have images, add captions and courtesy lines (such as courtesy of Church History Library, Salt Lake City) to the Word file. However, do not insert images in the Word files; submit them separately. Images should be 300 dpi or better (TIFF or JPG files). File names and captions should match (Fig. 1.1 = chapter 1, figure 1). Headings 3. Update: Include headings to break up the text. First-Level Headings First-level headings should be flush left and bolded, as in the example above. Capitalize internal words except for articles (a, an, and the), conjunctions (and, but, or, for, so, and yet), prepositions, and the word to in infinitive phrases. Second-Level Headings Second-level headings should be flush left and italicized. Capitalize like first-level headings. Third-level headings. Third-level headings should be italicized, followed by a period, and run in to the text; capitalization should be handled sentence-style (capitalize the first word and proper nouns).

    The World of Joseph Fielding: Chapter 3 Immigration from England to the New World World events in the late 18th and early 19th centuries opened the door for the settling of Upper Canada. Many new settlements were thriving by the time the missionary Parley P. Pratt arrived in Toronto in 1836. This is where Joseph, Mary and Mercy Fielding, as well as John and Leonora Cannon Taylor were introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At the end of the French and Indian War in 1763, France ceded all of its northern territory in the New World to England. Napoleon sold his remaining France controlled all of Canada claim in 1803, known as the Louisiana Purchase. In the 1830s, many emigrants from England, including the Fielding siblings, emigrated to Toronto. until the end of the Seven Years War in 1763, a war which involved most of the major powers in Europe. Known as the French and Indian War in North America, Great Britain gained much of eastern Canada by defeating the challenges of the French and their Native American allies, greatly strengthening England’s hold in the New World. After the American Revolution two decades later, thousands of Loyalists who had supported King George III felt it prudent to leave the United States. They found welcome refuge in Upper Canada, a province created from Lower Canada in 1791 specifically for these Loyalists. Upper Canada, higher in altitude than the north, and bordering along the Great Lakes in relative close proximity to the United States to the south, developed into a decidedly British community.

Successful MLMs require a social capital structure where members can access and mobilize both strong and weak social ties. Utah has a disproportionate share of MLM companies located in the state and a disproportionate number of MLM participants. We argue that Utah’s dominant religious institutions have led to the emergence of a social capital structure, making MLMs particularly viable. Utah is the most religiously homogeneous state; roughly half its population identifies as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The LDS Church’s institutions foster a social capital structure where (almost all) members have access to and can leverage social capital in all its forms. LDS institutions encourage members to make meaningful social connections characterized by trust and reciprocity with other church members in local neighborhoods and across the world.
