    Religious Studies Center Style Guide, 1 October 2018 Authors who submit manuscripts for potential publication should generally follow the guidelines in The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed. (Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 2017) and Style Guide for Editors and Writers, 5th ed. (Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2013). This style guide summarizes the main principles in the other style guides and lists a few exceptions to their guidelines. Formatting 1. Use double-spacing throughout the manuscript and the endnotes. Use one-inch margins, and insert page numbers at the bottom of the page. Use a Times New Roman 12-point font for both the body of the manuscript and the notes. Use only one space after periods. 2. If you have images, add captions and courtesy lines (such as courtesy of Church History Library, Salt Lake City) to the Word file. However, do not insert images in the Word files; submit them separately. Images should be 300 dpi or better (TIFF or JPG files). File names and captions should match (Fig. 1.1 = chapter 1, figure 1). Headings 3. Update: Include headings to break up the text. First-Level Headings First-level headings should be flush left and bolded, as in the example above. Capitalize internal words except for articles (a, an, and the), conjunctions (and, but, or, for, so, and yet), prepositions, and the word to in infinitive phrases. Second-Level Headings Second-level headings should be flush left and italicized. Capitalize like first-level headings. Third-level headings. Third-level headings should be italicized, followed by a period, and run in to the text; capitalization should be handled sentence-style (capitalize the first word and proper nouns).

    History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in South Florida Florida has a deep Mormon heritage, going back as far as 1845, when Phineas Young, the brother of Church President and western colonizer Brigham Young traveled to the state. While there, he introduced the Church to Native American tribes. Church growth was slow but steady, and by 1897 Florida’s first official congregation of the Church was organized in Jefferson County. J. C. Neubeck was the first Mormon resident of record in Miami. He settled in the area in 1907 and worked in a machine shop forging tools that would help extend the railroad to Key West. In 1909 the first missionaries were assigned to Miami, and for the next 16 years meetings of the small group were held in Neubeck’s home. On 14 November 1920, 18 people met under a cluster of sea grape trees on Miami Beach to organize a Sunday School, and J. C. Neubeck was called as the first superintendent. The Sunday School met each week with an average attendance of 20 to 25 people from Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, Homestead and other neighboring communities. Some came as far as 30 miles — a two-hour drive each way over primitive roads. The first chapel in Miami was subsequently dedicated in 1930 by Elder Joseph Fielding Smith, a senior leader of the Church from Salt Lake City. In 1947, Church leaders organized what would be the first stake in Florida, which covered most of the state. A stake is similar to a diocese.

Many new settlements were thriving by the time the missionary Parley P. Pratt arrived in Toronto in 1836. This is where Joseph, Mary and Mercy Fielding, as well as John and Leonora Cannon Taylor were introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At the end of the French and Indian War in 1763, France ceded all of its northern territory in the New World to England. In the 1830s, many emigrants from England, including the Fielding siblings, emigrated to Toronto. until the end of the Seven Years War in 1763, a war which involved most of the major powers in Europe. Known as the French and Indian War in North America, Great Britain gained much of eastern Canada by defeating the challenges of the French and their Native American allies, greatly strengthening England’s hold in the New World. After the American Revolution two decades later, thousands of Loyalists who had supported King George III felt it prudent to leave the United States. They found welcome refuge in Upper Canada, a province created from Lower Canada in 1791 specifically for these Loyalists. Upper Canada, higher in altitude than the north, and bordering along the Great Lakes in relative close proximity to the United States to the south, developed into a decidedly British community.
