Because there isn’t any research of plant parasitic nematodes on Z. zizyphus, authors were encouraged to work on it. Nematodes isolated from the soil samples by whitehead method (1965) and permanent slides were prepared. Among the species Filenchus aquilonius is redescribed for the first time from Southern Khorasan province.F. aquilonius is characterized by lip region rounded, not offset, with fine annuls; four incisures in lateral line; Stylet moderately developed, 10-11.8 µm long with rounded knobs; Hemizonid immediately in front of excretory pore; Deirids at the level of excretory pore; Spermatheca an axial chamber and offset pouch; Tail about 120-157 µm, tapering gradually to a pointed terminus. For molecular identification the large subunit expansion segments of D2/D3 were performed for F. aquilonius to examine the phylogenetic relationships with other Tylenchids. DNA sequence data revealed that F. aquilonius had closet phylogenetic affinity withIrantylenchus vicinus as a sister group and with other Filenchus species for this region and placed them in one clade with 100% for bootstap value support.

NEMATODE FAUNA OF COSTA RICAN PROTECTED AREAS Alejandro Esquivel Universidad Nacional de Heredia (U.N.A), Apdo postal 86-3000 Heredia, Costa Rica. ABSTRACT Esquivel, A. 2003. Nematode fauna of Costa Rican protected areas. Nematropica 33:131-145. The Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad (INBio), in collaboration with the Nematology Laborato- ry at Universidad Nacional (U.N.A) of Costa Rica, conducted a nematode inventory of Costa Rican wild lands. Hundreds of samples were randomly collected for nematode analyses and thousands of specimens were permanently mounted on Cobb slides. A total of 74 families, 231 genera and 105 spe- cies has been detected so far. Dorylaimida was the dominant order both in number of specimens and genera, while the least dominant orders were Aphelenchida, Monhysterida and Desmocolecida. Some nematodes were widely distributed across all microhabitats, others appeared be restricted to a specific microhabitat or ecosystem. Basic and advanced reports regarding nematode inventory in Cos- ta Rican protected areas can be requested through the web page of INBio (http://atta.inbio.ac.cr). Key words: biodiversity, conservation areas, inventory, nematodes, survey. RESUMEN Esquivel, A. 2003. Nematofauna de las áreas protegidas de Costa Rica. Nematropica 33:131-145. • Pratylenchus
Pratylenchus Taxonomy Class Secernentea Order Tylenchida Superfamily Tylenchoidea Family Pratylenchidae Genus Pratylenchus The genus name is derived from the words pratum (Latin= meadow), tylos (Greek= knob) and enchos ( Greek=spear). Originally described as Tylenchus pratensis by De Man in 1880 from a meadow in England. Pratylenchus scribneri was reported from potato in Tennessee in 1889. Root-lesion nematodes of the genus Pratylenchus are recognised worldwide as major constraints of important economic crops, including banana, cereals, coffee, corn, legumes, peanut, potato and many fruits. Their economic importance in agriculture is due to their wide host range and their distribution in every terrestrial environment on the planet (Castillo and Vovlas, 2007). Plant‐parasitic nematodes of the genus Pratylenchus are among the top three most significant nematode pests of crop and horticultural plants worldwide. There are more than 70 described species, most are polyphagous with a wide range of host plants. Because they do not form obvious feeding patterns characteristic of sedentary endoparasites (e.g. galls or cysts), and all worm‐like stages are mobile and can enter and leave host roots, it is more difficult to recognise their presence and the damage they cause. Morphology There are more than 70 described species, fewer than half of them are known to have males. Morphological identification of Pratylenchus species is difficult, requiring considerable subjective evaluation of characters and overlapping morphomertrics. Nematodes in this genus are 0.4-0.5 mm long (under 0.8 mm). No sexual dimorphism in the anterior part of the body. Deirids absent. Lip area low, flattened anteriorly, not offset, or only weakly offset, from body contour.

Abdollahi, and A. Karegar. 2016. Description of Aglenchus microstylus n. sp. (Nematoda, Tylenchidae) from Iran with a modified key to the species of the genus. Nematropica 46:38-44. A new species of the genus Aglenchus is described from the rhizosphere of a Montpellier maple tree in the Sepidar region, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province, Iran. Aglenchus microstylus n. sp. is a small nematode characterized by the presence of three incisures in each lateral field, stylet of 7–8 µm length, short post-vulval uterine sac, lateral vulval flaps, straight vagina and elongated-conoid tail, with pointed to finely rounded terminus. The new species differs from all the known species of the genus, including more closely relatedA. dakotensis and A. geraerti, by having a short stylet (7-8 µm), a short post-vulval uterine sac and straight vagina. A modified key to identification of the species of genus Aglenchus is presented. Common Name: Bud and Leaf Nematode Classification: K: Animalia, P: Nematoda, C: Secernentea, O: Tylenchida, F: Aphelenchoididae Aphelenchoides fragariae is a foliar nematode which has an extensive host range and is widely distributed through the tropical and temperate zones around the world. It is a frequently encountered and economically damaging pest in the foliage plant and nursery industries. As its name suggests, A. fragariae is also a major pest of strawberries worldwide. It has recently been detected in Australian strawberry crops, causing some major losses, whereas historically A. besseyi has caused problems in the Australian industry. This nematode should not be confused with A. ritzemabosi, another bud and leaf nematode that occurs mainly in chrysanthemum, or A. besseyi which causes “crimp disease” in strawberries. (Ritzema Bos, 1890) Christie, 1932 Lifecycle: A. fragariae is an obligate parasite of above On ferns, typical leaf blotch occurs in chevron-like stripes, as ground parts of plants. (Nematoda: Aphelenchoididae) Isolated from Pinus eldarica in Western Iran 1 1 2 3 MEHRAB ESMAEILI, RAMIN HEYDARI, MOZHGAN ZIAIE, AND JIANFENG GU Abstract: Aphelenchoides fuchsi sp. n. is described and illustrated from bark and wood samples of a weakened Mondell pine in Ker- manshah Province, western Iran. The new species has body length of 332 to 400 mm (females) and 365 to 395 mm (males). Lip region set off from body contour. The cuticle is weakly annulated, and there are four lines in the lateral field. The stylet is 8 to 10 mmlongand has small basal swellings. The excretory pore is located ca one body diam. posterior to metacorpus valve or 51 to 62 mm from the head. The postuterine sac well developed (60–90 mm). Spicules are relatively short (15–16 mm in dorsal limb) with apex and rostrum rounded, well developed, and the end of the dorsal limb clearly curved ventrad like a hook. The male tail has usual three pairs of caudal papillae (2+2+2) and a well-developed mucro. The female tail is conical, terminating in a complicated step-like projection, usually with many tiny nodular protuberances. The new species belongs to the Group 2 sensu Shahina, category of Aphelenchoides species. Phylo- genetic analysis based on small subunit (SSU) and partial large subunit (LSU) sequences of rRNA supported the morphological results.
