I've known about this movie for decades but, really, all I knew about it was that it was a Western starring Sean Connery. Back in the 90s, I dimly recall a snippet of it being in a preview for VHS tapes you could buy from 20th Century Fox home video or something, but that snippet just showed Brigitte Bardot without a shirt and Sean Connery standing in close proximity to her. That's not much to go on, but it was enough to grab the attention of a boy entering puberty I can tell you that much. It turns out that "Shalako" is about a group of big game hunters from Europe with an American senator in the mix who are hunting…. Sean Connery is Shalako , the man whose name must be uttered as often as possible, including a couple dozen times in the awesome theme song. Shalako must protect a bunch fancypants trespassers from Apaches led by Woody Strode, who is almost unrecognizable in his wig and war paint. An outsider character, respected by Native Americans to some degree and with superior knowledge of the environment, helps a group of travellers survive a hostile attack. What is refreshing about his character is that he is no superman. At one point he becomes second-in-command to someone with mountain climbing experience. The group he is assisting is a game hunting expedition, with a roster of familiar faces - Jack Hawkins, Honor Blackman great , Eric Sykes,…. We return to I had fairly low expectations for this one, but it was an entirely watchable shoot-em-up. Sean Connery is just there. If you happen upon the movie and like the western genre, give it a look. Ludicrous English western shot in Spain that is worthwhile only for Bardot looking rather stunning. Only lasted til about half way through this for two reasons, one it is poor and two ITV4 who had screened it had completely messed up the aspect ratio meaning any more than two in shot made it unwatchable. A stone- faced Connery as Shalako is a hero worth cheering on in a number of situations, when he gets screen-time. It does come with a couple of slow moments, but then the Apache show up again. I really like this one, and if you're either a Connery fan or a fan of spaghetti westerns, this is a good one to seek out despite the lackluster average reviews. It is about a group of rich assholes who pay some low-life cowboys to take them out hunting on land that is off limits from a treaty with the apache. They think because they are rich and white that nothing applies to them, and they completely disregard everything and cause a gigantic clusterfuck that gets nearly everyone killed. Chato loses and is about to be killed when his father, the Apache chief, intervenes. He gives safe passage to Shalako and the others in return for his son's life. Chato storms off, feeling disgraced. With the surviving members of the party safe, Shalako rides off into the western landscape, accompanied by Countess Irina. Over the years as Lloyd dreamed of becoming an independent producer, he kept in touch with L'Amour. He wanted to film his novel Shalako. Lloyd recounted that, at the time, many film distributors were reluctant to back a film starring Fonda, and increases in the cost of filming in Mexico made it impossible to pursue. L'Amour remarked that Sean Connery , who starred in the role, would certainly "look tall in the saddle". Lloyd obtained that film's planned original co-star Brigitte Bardot, Bond cinematographer Ted Moore , and Bond stuntman and action scene arranger Bob Simmons. Simmons talked Connery into shaving off the droopy moustache which he had grown for the historic period. The investors perhaps remembered Gregory Peck 's moustache in The Gunfighter , which was believed to have discouraged some of the public from attending. They feared the same might happen with Shalako. One film crew had to wipe out the tyre tracks in the sand before filming the Old West, whilst the other had to pick up the horse droppings before shooting the Second World War battles. Once the gypsy Apaches, mounted on horseback, rode by mistake headlong into an attack on a Long Range Desert Group. At this stage in his career Hawkins had lost his once-booming voice to throat cancer, his voice was dubbed in by others. Connery and Bardot got on well during filming and both enjoyed the experience of making the film. The film premiered in late to mixed reviews. Both films deal with experienced Westerners who get stuck with the job of guiding a bunch of tenderfoots to safety. But "Hombre" showed Newman in a ticklish moral dilemma. A white man raised by Indians, he had become one himself. Why should he save the very settlers who were breaking treaties and ravaging tribal homelands? Connery's situation is simpler: He saves a European aristocrat's hunting party, I guess, simply because he's after Brigitte Bardot. The plot, once it's introduced, turns out to be pretty unoriginal. There's even a specific twist stolen from "Hombre": The young wife of one of the older members of the party decides to leave her husband for the desperado who's robbing them. In "Hombre," something was made of this; in "Shalako," nothing. Indeed, all problems are solved at the level of action, and Dmytryk avoids the opportunity to develop his characters more deeply. That would be good if the action was better, but it isn't. A sequence near the beginning shows Miss Bardot in a depression in the earth, fighting off several Indians who surround her. In the way the scene is arranged and photographed, it looks surprisingly like a scene in "Anzio," where Robert Mitchum was fighting off Nazis instead of Indians. Other action sequences are routine. Indians chase a stagecoach for two miles, and you see about 25 Indians let out a whoop and fall off their horses. Later, the survivors gallop victoriously away. That's why they went with it. They do a nice job of showing the international flair of life in the West, but it loses excitement, and underuses most of the stellar cast, including Woody Strode as the Native American villain, which was particularly disappointing. It is possible I had seen this before as some parts were familiar and the whole thing was forgettable.
