GO EAT AT GRAINGER MARKET

If you haven’t got yourself down to Grainger Market yet you are seriously missing out. Forget spending hundreds a month at the high street supermarkets on overpriced ingredients - why not support local business and pocket the savings?

Grainger is the traditional Geordie hub for meeting your marras (friends), having a brew and picking up your shopping. Built in 1835 the market has been the epicentre of the city’s culinary scene for over a century, serving up street food from both Newcastle and further afield.

With so much to choose from, I’ve devised my TOP 3 unmissable places to treat yourself on a student budget:

Escape

Sometimes the hustle and bustle of the city can get a bit much. Luckily, Newcastle has plenty of green spaces where you can take a load off. The picturesque setting of Jesmond Dene is just a short metro ride from the city centre. It’s the ideal place for a quiet walk or a relaxing picnic.

Every June, the Town Moor plays host to The Hoppings, the city’s legendary funfair but throughout the rest of the year, it’s a nice tranquil spot to gather your thoughts, as is Leazes Park which can be found in the shadow of the football Stadium.

If the weather’s good, you can head further afield to one of the North East’s award winning beaches. Tynemouth Longsands and Whitley Bay are among the best beaches in the country and have the fish and chips to match. Again, thanks to the Metro, it’s easily accessible from the city. Staying in the city, the bars and restaurants along the front of the Quayside offer a laid back escape from the madness of the city itself. Head down on a Sunday to catch the Quayside market for delicious food and quirky gifts and novelties.

FAT HIPPO Here’s something for students looking for a hangover cure, a burger and fries for only £5! You can find this restaurant near monument and I would completely recommend this place to eat.

SLUG AND LETTUCE This suggestion is to beat the Monday gloom by going out with your friends and celebrating the start of the week. At the Slug and Lettuce you get 50% on this day and as a bonus, it’s located on the scenic quayside.

WETHERSPOONS Everyone knows this branded restaurant for being cheap with its food and its drink deals. It’s the perfect place for students to chill in between lectures and what makes it better, this one is located a walk away from the Union.

FRANKIE AND BENNYS This famous restaurant chain is well- known for its Italian inspired cuisine. I decided to include this particular place because of its generous 20% off for students with a NUS card and its location as its right next to Primark in the city centre.

Matt richardson FUNNY MAN

Funny man Matt Richardson graced the Domain stage with his unique style of stand-up comedy. He was supported by his very funny friends Tony Jameson and Nick Cranston. It was tow hours of pure unadulterated hilarity which saw the unlucky members of the front row being the inspiration for many a one liner. We sent our reporter Thomas Johnston along to have a quick chat with Matt; unfortunately we can’t print all of it (unless we want to get sued!) but keep on reading to find out what he has to say. NSU/Societies come in all shapes and forms and we love them for it. Having a range of different things to go to makes life fun. Yes you can like to dance, but also like to go to book club as part of English Society and then be surrounded by people of the same faith and belief in your spare time.

Getting to pick and mix all the wonderful and different things is awesome, but knowing where to start can be hard. There are about 100 different groups and it’s pretty hard to commit to them all, so here are a few Society Spotlights – giving you an insider into what it’s like to be part of something special.

Uni can be tough, but societies are like families, you’ll laugh, cry and have a lot of fun with each other. Swing by NSU and sign up.

The Rock Society or RocSoc as it’s known is probably the best music based society in Newcastle. As a society we are all about having a good time and making friends through the mutual bond of rock and alternative music. We also like to party, we really like to party and with links to some of Newcastle’s finest alternative establishments we bring the party all year round. We even run our club night called Phoenix, once a month.

The rock society is all about having fun, from our weekly nights out to our fortnightly social events we encourage our members to have fun. I joined the society at a particularly low point in my life but within a few weeks of hanging out with the rock society I was having the time of my life. Joining the rock society was the best decision I’ve made at university and I feel that I have truly made some friends for life.

BROWS//

WORDS // DEAN WILSON

First and foremost - these are not holy brow commandments, or a universally agreed method on how to achieve the one true brow, it’s just how I like to do mine. If yours are totally different 4. and you think mine are gross (first, mean) then keep doing you boo and don’t let a magazine dictate how you should look! Also, if you don’t do anything to them that’s fine too- you’re perfect as you are!

#Fave, concealer! Using a (different!) small makeup brush, paint 1. around your brows in a concealer that either matches your skin tone or is a shade lighter. This really makes your edges sharp, and fixes up any mistakes you might have made.

Pluck those damn brows hun. There is nothing worse on this 5. earth than when people try to pencil a new brow shape on top of existing hairs, just pretending that the hair isn’t there!? Moderately (don’t go overboard) pluck them into shape before applying product. Benefitcosmetics.co.uk has a great ‘mapping’ section to see how to pluck them for your face shape.

Blend in the concealer! I like using a damp Beauty Blender, which is the best thing ever. They’re £16 and are really worth the money, and will save you hours in makeup application as you can use 2. it for everything! Get a feel for it with a cheap knock off from Primark for £1 but know that the real deal is infinitely softer and bouncier, and stipples quickly and easily for a flawless, airbrushed finish.

With a small angled brush, sweep a brow pomade (Anastasia Beverly Hills, £15) or, if you’re poor like me, a fab dupe which is 6. Maybelline Lasting Drama gel eyeliner in brown (eBay £2.80), across the top of your brow. Take your time, you can do this in one smooth line or in little dashes, whatever works! Tip- and this works for gel eyeliner on your eyes too- if the gel is too sticky and drags across your skin, microwave the little pot for around 15 seconds. It’ll melt the product slightly, making it runnier and easier to apply- just make sure not to use too much! You can also This is optional, I know that some of you may be looking at these do this with a sharp brow pencil, whatever works for you. and thinking jeez, what on earth is he thinking, but I like my brows BOLD honey: #sorryboutit. Anyways, here I went along the edges of my brows with a clean dry angled brush and some brown brow powder, although a matching eyeshadow would work just as well. This helped me fix anywhere the concealer 3. may have covered some brow I didn’t want it to, and pulls it all together for me. I also applied a little bit of powder highlight (compare pics 5 & 6) under my arch to lift my brow bone, and also a little in the inner corner of my eye because it’s hella cute. You can use whatever suits you for this, I used a slightly shimmery highlight from a Sleek contour pallette (£6.49), but a light eyeshadow would do the trick too. Finish with a clear brow Repeat along the bottom edge of the brow, and using the gel if you want to keep those feisty brows in place, or spritz with remaining product on the brush (don’t add more), wiggle it into a makeup fixing spray. the main body of the brow and the front of the brow. WORDS // SHARIFAH ALRABAH TREAT YOURSELF TO A So you’ve just started university, and your brain is blown away by a FEW PARTY DRESSES whirlwind of exciting and scary thoughts. It may have been okay to wear that tea-stained, crumb-laden excuse for a dressing gown when you were at home with Mum and Dad, but now you’re probably going to be living with new people that you’ve never met before. If you want to make a good first impression, chuck out your old, ragged cover up for a new, fluffy number. The heaters in student accommodation are often tiny, so the thicker the better.

INVEST IN A WARM WINTER COAT Noticed a theme here? Warmth is important! As much as this may surprise you, Newcastle is not known for its tropical heat. People moving from Southern areas may get a shock, as it can get icy cold up here in the North. However, a good quality, thick coat makes all the difference. Go for a coat with faux fur, in particular faux sheep shearling, as it’s a huge trend this winter.

YOU’RE GOING TO NEED A BIGGER BAG With up to six different modules to keep track of, you’re going to take a lot of notes. That means you’re going to use a lot of paper. Add in a laptop, highlighters and library books, and you’ve got a whole lot to carry. A new bag with strong, supportive straps is in order. Structured bags and briefcase styles are in, along with thick fringed tassels and black. Go for one of these things to be on trend, or even go for a combo for extra brownie points. Just make sure it’s BIG.

ACCESSORIZE YOUR WORKSTATION WITH A PATTERNED LAPTOP CASE Your laptop will become your best friend. You’ll work together, play together, and you may even cry over a forgotten about essay due in for tomorrowtogether. So why not treat your best friend to a shiny new jacket? A case will help protect your laptop whilst you’re carrying it about, and you may as well look good whilst shielding it.

So I know that not everyone is lucky enough to have a spare room to use as a dressing room right now. 2015 has been a brilliant year for new music; with a diverse range of acts from James Bay to Years & Years being played on the radio, it’s a great time to hear something new. Despite these big names appearing out of nowhere, there are some artists who have yet to reach the dizzying heights of stardom but are well on their way to getting there. From jazz Musicians to EDM to rock to acoustic, there are some up-and-comers who really stand out from the crowd. Maybe you’re looking for a new musical icon or just fancy listening to something new, here are my top ten musicians to watch this year to check out this year.

CULTURE CLUB Entertainments NEWCASTLE TV & FILM HISTORY

One may not automatically associate Newcastle and its environs, with film and TV talent, but you’d be surprised just how lucky we are. It is the birthplace of such celebrated film directors as the late Tony Scott, best known for ‘Top Gun’, and his older brother Ridley Scott, well-noted for ‘Blade Runner’. The actor Greg Wise, (husband of actress, author and screenplay writer, Emma Thompson) was also born in Newcastle. In addition the city is the birth place of the TV presenters duo Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, branded as Ant and Dec, and only recently Dec married here in St Michael’s Church. Among the university alumni, is the hilarious comedian and actor Rowan Atkinson recognized on the sitcoms, ‘Blackadder’ and ‘Mr. Bean’. He began his career with an engineering degree. Lee Hall who wrote ‘Billy Elliot’ and ‘Cooking with Elvis’, originated from Newcastle too. The list of alternative forms of talent connected with Newcastle goes on, with singers such as Sting and Cheryl Fernandez Versini, and the footballer Alan Shearer.

If anyone has seen the original crime film ‘’ (1971) starring Michael Caine, you might recognise the and other landmarks, as the film was mainly set here. The noteworthy TV drama series ‘Our Friends in the North’, filmed in Newcastle, not only won innumerable awards but also kick started the careers of , , Gina McKee and . Actor and singer Robson Green began his life and work here and later returned to star in the crime drama ‘Wire in the Blood’. Other popular TV series that are located in the north east include ‘Inspector George Gently’ and ‘Vera.’ Let’s not forget that this city has been an inspiration for many creators such as the late prizewinning novelist and poet Julia Darling, some of whose writing was based on the area and its dialect. You never know what celeb you may see here. It was not that long ago that I saw Michelle Ryan aka TAMARA BOULTON ‘Bionic Woman’ walking down Grey Street, shopping bags in hand. Our city is the quite the scene of talent after all.

In recent years The Academy that votes on the Best Picture panel has been renowned for being too old and set in their ways, so maybe it is time for a modernisation shake-up of the eligibility of non-drama films in the Best Picture category.

This coming of age drama follows Quentin Jacobsen (Nat Wolff) on his quest to find his mysterious neighbour, and childhood sweetheart, Margo Roth Spiegelman (Cara Delevingne) after she goes missing.

Audiences were perhaps most excited to see Cara Delevingne in her big film debut. Despite her limited amount of screen time, the model-turned-actress impresses in the role capturing Margo’s enigmatic personality and putting on a surprisingly convincing American accent. It’s safe to say that we will be seeing her face - and those trademark eyebrows – in plenty of films in the future.

On the surface, the film appears to be your stereotypical teen romance flick – awkward teenage boy falls in love with the unattainable girl next door. However, Paper Towns instead offers characters with complexity and imperfection as well as notable performances from its lead actors.

Though these individual elements are promising, the meat and potatoes of some of the songs leave something to be desired. There are some relatively weak choruses such as the title track Venom, You Want A Battle? and Army of Noise, the latter two being singles. This begs the question, why release two of the songs with weak choruses to promote the album? Presumably this is more to do with targeting the band’s split demographics rather than just putting out the best songs; Army of Noise certainly demonstrates a lot of the heavier features fans have been missing lately, whereas You Want A Battle caters more to newer fans. This isn’t a bad thing either, because Venom really does offer the best of both worlds.

Venom has some great songs to offer. Those that stand out for me are No Way Overall, Venom presents a treat for the ears of any Rock or Metal fan and Bullet’s reclaim of their heavier style, while still comprising the more melodic elements. But Northumbria was only designated as a host training venue for the Tongan team after rigorous inspections and discussions with RWC2015 staff and visiting team management during the past two years.

The Tongans will use the University’s outdoor grass pitches at Bullocksteads and the indoor training hall, fitness facilities and swimming pool at Sport Central as they prepare for their match against current Champions New Zealand in the second of three fixtures taking place at St James’ Park during the tournament.

Further to being an official tournament team base and as part of Northumbria’s involvement in RWC2015, the University welcomed the Webb Ellis Cup to its City Campus.
