October 2020 NEWS FROM THE NEST October 2020 Happy Fall! I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful fall colors that we are having this year! Now is a perfect time to get outdoors and take a hike or sit by a lake. Maybe even get in your last camping trip of the year! It is also a time when we start slowing down and not moving so fast. This time of year is always an opportunity to reset and recharge. Enjoy the many things that fall brings; Hot apple cider, pumpkin patches, the many varieties of squash, leaf peeping, fuzzy socks, warm sweaters, and sitting by the toasty re with your family. Fall also brings Halloween! It has been a hot topic this year since COVID has everything out of the ordinary and putting a damper on everyone's plans. In this case I am happy to announce that we will be providing the community with a fun opportunity to give the kids something close to a normal ordinary Halloween. The Health Department approved a Trick or Treat Drive Thru at Eagles' Nest! This event will be held on Thursday, October 29th at 5:30. All participants must wear a mask unless under the age of three. No one is permitted to leave their vehicle. All families can drive around our circle driveway as many times as they want to give their kids a chance to show off their costumes and collect candy. All Eagles' Nest staff will be wearing masks and gloves as we pass out candy. I know this is not the ideal Halloween but at least we can get close. I hope everyone of our families here at Eagles' Nest is able to participate in this event and enjoy the fun! See the attached yer below to share with friends :) On October 29th the classrooms will have a little Halloween party for their students. We will not be able to have a school party due to COVID regulations. Games and fun Halloween treats will be provided. Eagles' Nest will be closed for the following dates: Wednesday and Thursday 11/25-11/26 Wednesday and Thursday 12/23-12/24 Elephant Orange Spider Web Halloween Illustration Download pdf Halloween Flyer (2) (1).pdf 67.3 KB Preschool Classroom The preschool class is working on recognizing each letter of the alphabet. There will be a 'letter of the week' assigned every Monday. The students will practice tracing and writing the letters daily. We encourage parents to help their children spell out their name and recognize the letters on a regular basis. This will assist them in the classroom during assignments. Miss Salina will be sending home backpacks for the students at various times during the school year for families to work with their students on the materials inside. These are fun activities and help your child with their developmental skills. She will also be assigning homework to the students all homework will need to be returned to school. These assignments are meant to be benecial and not stressful. The class took a hike into the woods to enjoy the fall colors and play! Look for pictures in Tadpoles. Forms, Forms, Forms! Thank you for turning in and signing all forms and paperwork as needed! This has been truly seamless and makes it so much easier for us to meet the State regulations. Accepting New Students Eagles' Nest is accepting new students in the infant nursery and preschool classroom. Help spread the word and tell your friends! Enjoy the fun Halloween music videos below! ‘TOON IN, ‘TOON OUT: AMERICAN TELEVISION ANIMATION AND THE SHAPING OF AMERICAN POPULAR CULTURE, 1948-1980 by David Perlmutter A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Joint Master’s Program – Departments of History The University of Manitoba / The University of Winnipeg Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Copyright © 2010 by David Perlmutter ii ABSTRACT This thesis is a systematic study of significant American television animation programs produced between 1948 and 1980, with special attention given to selected works produced by three influential studios: Hanna-Barbera, Jay Ward and Filmation. It considers how outside forces such as television network censorship, grassroots political activism, and other social and political forces served to limit how the genre developed, and the extent to which producers chose to test the limits to get their points across. It provides a discussion of masculine images in television animation of the 1950s and 1960s, and of the reactions of television animation producers to outside concerns regarding violent imagery in children’s programming, and the threat of censorship related to this, in the 1970s. My thesis demonstrates that television animation producers, as a result of the need to remain actively involved in production, were forced to change and adapt with the times around them. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my family and friends for supporting me through this endeavor. I have appreciated their support especially in those times when I doubted my abilities, because they never did. I particularly want to thank Professor Churchill and Professor Elvins for giving me their advice and guidance in the long and arduous process of conceiving the draft.

CASTING A SPELL ON FEMINISM: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF SABRINA SPELLMAN AND THE DIALECTIC OF FEMINIST LIBERATION AND PATRIARCHAL CONTROL by CHRISTINA MARIE BROWN JESSY J. OHL, COMMITTEE CHAIR MEREDITH M. BAGLEY, COMMITTEE CO-CHAIR BETH S. BENNETT CINDY TEKOBBE A THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Communication Studies in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2020 Copyright Christina Marie Brown 2020 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Witches have long captivated the public’s imagination as symbols of both the oppression and liberation of women. This tension between control and liberation is precisely why the witch is such a powerful symbol for feminism. This thesis explores how gendered representations of witches in popular culture index the status/strength/struggles of feminism at any given time. This thesis is a feminist rhetorical analysis of one witch in particular: Sabrina Spellman. Originally a 1962 Archie comic character, then the 1996 live-action series Sabrina the Teenage Witch starring Melissa Joan Hart, Sabrina returned again in the 2018 Netflix reboot the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina staring Kiernan Shipka. Due to Sabrina’s rich history and persistence, she serves as a reflection of feminism at different points in time. This thesis explores the rhetorical strategies through which Sabrina is depicted as a symbol for feminist liberation, but also the ways patriarchal control is enforced in each of these texts to limit her power. ii DEDICATION For my sister. Thank you for insisting that I watch the new version of Sabrina, otherwise this project would have never been possible.
