Dear Colleague: We are pleased to offer you this personal guide for your use during Digestive Disease Week 2009. This guide provides you with SSAT scientific and social functions open to the Membership as well as DDW activities of interest involving the Society. The SSAT has strived to integrate our membership’s comments and feedback to create this outstanding meeting. Preceding the official opening of the SSAT meeting, the Sunday, May 31st, Postgraduate Course, is entitled “Acute Care Gastrointestinal Surgery: Thinking on Your Feet—A Case- Based Course”. This course will get back to the basics of general alimentary tract surgery by examining common and difficult operative decisions that arise in our daily practices and while on call. Teaching cases, videos, and technical pearls and tips will address the off-hours and urgent alimentary tract challenges that we face in increasing numbers with our aging population and continuing healthcare access issues. A full syllabus will be provided. On Monday morning at 8:00 AM, the SSAT’s Opening Session will include the introduction of new members, announcements of SSAT scholarship awards, reports from the SSAT Foundation, recognition of the Foundation donors, presentation of the Public Service Award, and conferment of the Founders Medal. The Opening Session will lead into the Presidential Plenary Session that will highlight some of the best papers selected for the Annual Meeting. The Presidential Address—as well as the Doris and John L. Cameron Guest Oration, “Communication as a Quality Maker: A Cut to the Chase,” by Dr. Stephen C. Beeson—follow. In the afternoon, the first of four peer-reviewed Video Sessions and the first in a new series of three “Clinical Ward Rounds” are offered; this year’s SSAT/ASCRS Symposium will tackle “Surgical Management of Complex Colorectal Disorders”; and the first of two “Controversies in GI Surgery” sessions returns, each offering two topical debates. Tuesday morning, June 2nd, a number of sessions run concurrently, including: the Public Policy Committee Panel on “Genomics and Cancer Care”; the SSAT/AHPBA Symposium, “Managing Complications of Acute Pancreatitis”; and the first of three Quick Shot Sessions of brief oral presentations. Also featured Tuesday morning is Dr. George F. Sheldon’s Maja and Frank G. Moody State-of-the-Art Lecture, “The Evolving Era of Surgeon Shortage.” Among that afternoon’s features is the SSAT/AGA/ASGE State-of-the-Art Conference, “Barrett’s Esophagus, Dysplasia, and Early Esophageal Adenocarcinoma: Managing the Transition.” The Annual Business Meeting of the Society immediately follows this conference at 5:00 PM. Dr. Nathaniel J. Soper, Local Arrangements Chair, has organized what promises to be a fabulous Members Reception on Tuesday evening at the Chicago Stock Exchange Room at the Art Institute of Chicago. Although the venue is just a short walk from the Palmer House Hilton, shuttle buses will also be offered, departing from the hotel at 6:55 PM. Session highlights of Wednesday, May 23rd, include the joint SSAT/ISDS Breakfast Symposium on “Prevention, Evaluation, and Treatment of Leaks After Gastrointestinal Surgery”; a morning Education Committee Panel on “Advancing Endoscopy in GI Surgery” and a Video Session devoted to NOTES and Single Port Access Surgery; and the afternoon SSAT/SAGES Symposium focusing on “The Endoscope as a Surgical Tool.” I look forward to seeing you at what will be an exciting and stimulating week among colleagues from the United States and abroad. Sincerely,

David W. McFadden, MD President 50th Annual Meeting | May 30 – June 3, 2009 | Chicago, Il 5

Where: Chicago Stock Exchange Trading Room The Art Institute of Chicago 230 South Columbus Drive, Chicago, Illinois When: Tuesday, June 2, 2009 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Chicago has been the major center for American architecture since the late 19th century. One of the city’s most important early architects was Louis Sullivan, who, with his partner, Dankmar Adler, designed the Chicago Stock Exchange, built in 1893 – 94. When the Stock Exchange was demolished in 1972, sections of Sullivan’s elaborate stenciled decorations, molded plaster capitals, and art glass were preserved from the Trading Room, the magnificent centerpiece of this 13-story structure. Using these fragments, the Art Institute was able to reconstruct the Trading Room, in which SSAT members will bond together to bullishly celebrate the Golden Anniversary of its Annual Meeting. Take stock: The market for tickets is sure to be strong, so register today to secure your place at the festivities!

The venue is an approximate four-block walk from the Palmer House Hilton. Buses will also be provided, beginning departure from the hotel at 6:55 PM.
