Wright...........................................................................128 3 Introduction Tartu Theological Seminary is the private professional higher education institution, owned by The Union of Free Evangelical and Baptist Churches of Estonia (UFEBC). It serves the needs of evangelical Protestant churches and Christians, with a special focus on Free Church Theology. The school was established and developed to prepare leaders for Estonian Free Churches. Its predecessor, The Estonian Seminary for Baptist Preachers, was opened in the Spring 1922. The school was the first free-church educational institution in Estonia. Unfortunately, the school was closed between 1940-1989. After reopening the school gained the status of government-acknowledged professional higher education institution. After its re-opening more than 100 students have graduated. Structure of the School The school has two interconnected parts – training and development. The rector looks after both; the training part is led by the leader of studies and the development part by the leader of development. The leadership group consists of these three people. Additionally there are (according to the need) the coordinator of mentoring network, project leaders for the longer Adult Education programs, and the school psychologist. The academic leadership of the school is carried out by the 3-person leadership group and five lead teachers. During the last four years the school has been developed into a Free Church Educational Centre with a growing variety of training courses. These are combined in different ways with the higher education curriculum, which is called “Free Church Theology and Leadership”. This change was caused by the new Concept of Education, accepted by the UFEBC at 2014. At the moment the school operates according to the Development Plan 2016- 2020. The latest accomplishments of the school are: Full government recognition of our higher education curriculum (2017) The publication of three books (2016-17) and one documentary film (2018) A growing number of learners both on higher level (50-60) and in Adult Education programmes (approximately 400 every year) Cooperation agreement with Estonian Conference of Seventh-day Adventist Church and two groups of their students (2014) Mission The Seminary supports the lifelong and holistic development of individual Christians and congregations. Vision The Seminary is a nationally and internationally recognized evangelical free-church education centre, which through its activities empowers local churches and has a positive impact on society. 4 Values Treasuring Bible-knowledge and Christian experience Resting on a relationship with God Knowledge-based and practical Congregational and teamwork-based Discipleship- and mentorship-oriented The Key Sentence “For the good and the growth of the congregations” Strategic Objectives The influence of the school is theologically prominent in the free church context and meaningfully present in the “secular” society. The school cooperates in a team-based partnership with the UFEBC and

Discarding the Names of Parents and Godparents Annika Hussar Estonia Abstract There were extensive changes in names and naming patterns during the 19th century. In Estonia, in addition to other significant changes, the names chosen for children were less and less influenced by the surrounding community. In other countries, the practice of giving children their godparents’ name has been researched by Smith-Bannister (1997); Garðarsdóttir (1999); Hacker (1999); Sangoï (1999); and van Poppel, Bloothooft, Gerritzen, and Verduin (1999). Social relationships played a far bigger role in the city than in the rural areas; thus the tradition of giving children their godparents’ names was preserved better in the cities. The parents’ choice was not regulated by the Lutheran church either. In Estonia, the practice of giving children double names spread only at the end of the 19th century; thus the emergence of modern names removed the names of the parents, grandparents and godparents from usage, especially in the case of girls’ names. *** For three to four hundred years, until mid-19th century, Estonians had been using names that the Germans had imported during Christianization. These Christian names were adopted in the 14th to 16th centuries (Rätsep 1982). The adopted Low German names were either already phonotactically suitable to the Estonian ear or they were adapted in their usage. The size of the stock of names used during that time was small. Researchers have pointed to the fact that between the 16th to 18th centuries and the first half of the 19th century there were indeed few names used, especially female names.

    Take a pilgrimage in West Harjumaa The westward routes across Harjumaa are to be recommended, and run mainly away from major highways, allowing anyone using them to enjoy the full beauty of Harjumaa, its nature and its various cultural sights. West Harjumaa is especially rich in manors, but it also has a good many new urban areas. The view when leaving Tallinn is of an entire shoreline featuring an impressive limestone bank, which alternates with beautiful sandy beaches in Vääna-Jõesuu, Keila-Joa, Kloogaranna, Lohusalu and Laulasmaa. Due to the fact that the aim of the pilgrimage is to introduce the beautiful shrines of Harjumaa, we will not take the trail that runs along the shoreline. PILGRIMAGE ROUTES IN WEST HARJUMAA ROUTE Tallinn (Viru Square) - Keila - Paldiski - Padise - Harju-Risti - Riisipere - Hageri - Tallinn Tallinna The pilgrimage to Harjumaa starts from Tallinn and heads off towards the city of Keila. You can go there by train, bike or on foot, and if these options are not suitable for you, all of the shrines can be accessed by car, although you might miss an interesting natural or cultural sight if you take the car and drive along the highways. If you start your pilgrimage on a bike, you must first take Paldiski Road to the Haabersti roundabout. You can also use public transport, using trolleybus No. 6 from the city centre or No. 7 from Balti Jaam railway station. To the left from the roundabout is the Õismäe residential area. To begin to leave the city, you have to take the Paldiski road, to the right of which is Lake Harku.

Together, with the Baptist Union of Denmark, the BWA and the EBF express our deep concern regarding the suggested legislation on compulsory translation of non-Danish-language sermons into Danish. While recognizing that all countries face challenges with integration, for more than 400 years, the Baptist family has consistently advanced freedom of religion and conscience as one of our defining core values. Protecting freedom of belief and conscience is most thoroughly secured in countries that maintain robust provisions of freedom of religion. The suggested legislation directly intrudes into this cherished democratic and human rights value and unduly burdens individuals and communities of faith. In addition, the suggested legislation: • Runs counter to the core convictions of conscience of our Baptist identity currently in practice in 54 local Danish Baptist churches. The first Baptist church in Denmark was founded in Copenhagen in 1839, and for the first ten years Baptists were fined and imprisoned. Baptists played a role in securing religious freedom as part of the Constitution of 1849. For 182 years, Baptist churches have faithfully served in Denmark by providing spiritual nourishment, community service by giving aid to those in need, offering social services such as counseling, and more recently directly working to help refugee and migrant populations successful integrate into Danish society.
