SELENA GOMEZ Submitted by Paige Flory

Selena Gomez was born on July 22, 1992. Her parents were very young; 16 and 17! She was named after Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. Selena was raised in Grand Prairie, Texas partially by her grandparents because her parents were in high school. Her parents divorced when Selena was just 5 and she and her mom moved to an apartment. She met her future best friend, when auditioning for a TV show called Barney & Friends. She was in the TV show for 2 years before she got too old. In 2004, Mandy (Selena’s mom) and Selena went to Austin, Texas after hearing that they were holding nationwide auditions for the Disney Channel. She ended up making it and was cast in a show in 2006 called The Suite Life of Jack & Cody. Selena was in the Disney movie Princess Protection Program in 2009. Her best friend was also in the film! The movie won a 2009 Teen Choice Award for Choice Summer TV Show. Selena thought she should try something new. She wanted to try singing. So, she decided to form a band — it would be called Selena Gomez & The Scene. But she also wanted to use her fame to help and inspire others. She helped with the UR Votes Count and became the youngest spokesperson for UNICEF. In 2009, Selena Gomez & The Scene released their very first . They called it Kiss & Tell. The album sold 66,000 copies in 7 days (one week)! When you’re famous you tend to have paparazzi following you — and they can be annoying. Just ask Selena! She used to have paparazzi following her everywhere asking, “do you have a boyfriend? Who’re you dating?” and all other annoying and personal questions. Selena tried her best to ignore them and stuck headphones in her ears. But when she was seen with Justin Bieber, she opened up and said they were a couple. (For more info go to Epic! books and search ‘Selena Gomez’. It’s on pg. 25). Gomez was also in a movie called . She went to the movie premiere in 2010 and loved it. She also released her band’s second album called A Year Without Rain. I hope you learned a lot about Selena Gomez. I know I did and enjoyed researching her. I got all my information from Epic! books. Bye!

BOOK SERIES RECOMMENDATION THE BOXCAR CHILDREN BY GERTRUDE CHANDLER WARNER Submitted by Eliza Hiltner

Four children: Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny love adventure. Either living in a boxcar, or being tested to see if they can find something to do in the most boring fishing village. Or even spending a summer in a barn. They can always find adventure. I really like this book series because the story always has something exciting and it is a nice easy reader. My favorite character is Violet because she is quiet, kind and has very good manners. The funniest character is Benny and everyone likes him and laughs at him. There are a few scary parts but it is more exciting than scary and it always ends well. There are 151 books in the series but Gertrude Chandler Warner only wrote the first fifteen. I have read 12 of the books in the last month. I would recommend ages 7-10 would like these books. JUNE 8, 2020 ISSUE #12, page 4 THREE BOLD WOMEN PART III Submitted by Audria Rosinski

Harriet Beecher Stowe was born in 1811. At age 21 she moved to Ohio with her father, Lyman Beecher. She met her future husband, Calvin Ellis Stowe, in Ohio. He was a professor and supporter of the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was a system of people throughout the , who helped individuals escape slavery. In 1850, congress passed a fugitive slave law, which made Harriet want to write about how slavery was wrong. She started writing for an anti-slavery newspaper, which later was published into a book called Uncle Toms Cabin. The book was also made into a play. The book taught people how slavery was wrong. She wrote 30 books before she died in 1896.

Annie Edson Tyler wanted fame and fortune. She was widowed from the Civil War. One day she was reading in the newspaper about Niagara’s falls and she decided to go down the falls in a barrel. She had a special barrel made with a steel bottom so she would stay upright and there were two handles in the barrel for her to hold on to. There was pillow stuffed around her too. On October 24,1901, her 63 birthdays, she went soaring down the falls. She was battered and bruised. Annie is bold and brace because she did stuff that women would not have normally done during this time. She was a daredevil. She opened a souvenir stand by the falls and lived there until she died in 1921.

Brooklyn Bell is a strong female mountain biker. She is a unique rider in the sport because she is black and there are not many riders of color. Brooklyn is bold because she has created her own comic character, Ruby J., that promotes inclusion of all people in the sport of mountain biking. She is also unique because she is from Bellingham. Check out her video on YouTube called Becoming Ruby. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adLkZNd-EOg

JUNE 8, 2020 CAT VS. DOG ISSUE #12, page 5 CATCHING UP WITH PIPPA Submitted by Aine Watson Pippa and Holly had just finished tea with their mole friend (his name is Winbikye but he goes by Win). They had mint tea☕. Win was good at making tea. You could say he was skilled. Anyway, enough about tea. Pippa and Holly were about to leave when Win said, “Do you want to go on an adventure?” Pippa and Holly gave each other the same look. “YES!” they yelled. They could not wait to start. But they did not have to worry about waiting. They were ready and packed in ten minutes. Pippa and Holly met Win back at Win’s mole hole. “You ready?” asked Win. “It’s time to explore the Mole World. Let’s flip a coin to see which way we should go first. Don’t worry Mole World is a big loop. So we will end up back here in the end.” Then they snuggled their favorite stuffies and headed on their way. They were going down the first tunnel. “One way I would explain this tunnel is dirty,” said Pippa. “I agree,” said Holly, as she tried to clean herself off. “That’s a mole’s life,” said Win. Then suddenly they reached these big brass doors. “Come on,” said Win. “This is the Royal Mole Castle. I ‘d like to introduce you to the king and queen.” They walked up the big brass steps. All the way up to the throne room, where they greeted the king and queen, who did not look happy to see a dog and cat in their kingdom. Win bowed and said, “Your Majesty, these are my friends.” “You know you’re not allowed to have other animals inside the Mole Kingdom,” said the King. “You are breaking a mole law.” “But these are nice friends,” said Win. “Well I’m sorry Win but we will have to throw you into the dungeons and escort your friends out of the kingdom.” “But,” said Pippa. “But,” said Holly. To find out what happens next for Pippa and Holly, tune into next week’s paper! MY CAT MORTIMUS WESELTON JONES CULVER III: MORT AND THE KITTEN PART 6 Submitted by Edie Culver After they had eaten their fill, the cats all went up to bed. When Cole woke up and went downstairs. When he got there, he found Lilia and Gina laughing together on the couch, Queen Amara and Cara making Catknipwaffles, and Prince Soi and King Noya discussing the matter of how to help stop the dragon. When the other cats realized Cole was there, they all greeted him and asked him if he wanted any waffles. “Well of course!” Said Cole. After they had breakfast, they all went up to their rooms to get dressed. Cole was the first to come down, then King Noya, then Queen Amara, then Lilia, then Prince Soi, then Princess Cara and Princess Gina. After they all got there, they started to discuss what Cole and Lilia would need to defeat the dragon. None of them had ever even seen one. They thought it would be a good Idea to see what the dragon looked like and how strong it was before they decided to have forty cats trying to make it stop destroying the kingdom of Angdorien. Lilia, Cole, Prince Soi, and Princess Gina were going to go and see the dragon. The others would stay at the palace. When the Prince, Princess, Cole, and Lilia got to Angdorien they saw they tall blue eyed scaly yellow creature. Tails of Mort will be continued in the next issue . . . stay tuned! JUNE 8, 2020 ISSUE #12, page 6 THE WITCH, THE DRAGON AND MARY: CHAPTER 7, THE DUNGEONS Submitted by Elsa Watson

Quickly everyone, except for Hazel, crawled under the small table. Hazel looked through the window and sure enough the witch was staring back at her. Suddenly it sounded as if a vase had been thrown and broken on the floor. But it was the witch breaking the window. Hazel was sucked out the window and found herself in the witch’s castle in the old dungeons. It was dark and cold and smelled musty. Curled up on the floor in pain, Hazel heard clanging. The sound was getting closer and closer. It was the witch. “Now I have all of you!” cried the witch as her voice cracked and cackled. “No you don’t!” cried Hazel. Suddenly everything went black . . .

Meanwhile back at the seaside cottage, Jotham, Annika, and Mary were deciding what to do about the witch. “I think we should go and confront the Queen of the Witches,” said Jotham. “No it’s way too risky,” said Annika. “We should sneak into the palace to rescue Hazel.” “Both ideas are good ones,” said Mary. “But what if we confront the witch and she captures all of us? Then who will save us?” “That’s true,” said Jotham. “I didn’t think about it that way. We better go with Annika’s idea.” Mary flipped to the page in the magical book that they were originally on and said, “Aine.” Then she pictured the place she wanted to go in her mind. Once again they felt as if they were being wrapped in a warm blanket. The next moment they were at the dragon sanctuary. Jotham led them inside the dragon barn. Mary walked to the other end and found Elsa in her stable. Jotham went to another stable. This one said, “Ham” across the door. A dragon stepped out. It was bright green. Annika went to a door that said, “Gracie.” She came back out with a beautiful iridescent dragon. They all climbed on to their dragons and flew off towards Audria – the witches’ castle. When they arrived at the castle they saw that it was guarded by strong soldiers. They looked around for another way in and found a small grate about a mile away from the castle. It said, “Secret entrance to castle” and had a beautiful ruby on it. As they all stepped inside, everything was black and they could hear an eerie scream. They all grabbed each other’s hands but they could feel themselves being pulled away from each other. They were falling through three separate tunnels. They fell and fell and fell and fell and fell and FELL! They all landed on cold, hard stone floor deep in the dungeons. It was dark and musty.

ALL ABOUT SEA URCHINS Submitted by Jewel Bryngelson

SPIKY, BUT COOL I found lots of sea urchins at the beach in Bandon and wanted to know more. I learned a lot about these spiky, but cool creatures

SEA URCHIN LIFE CYCLE The life cycle of a sea urchin starts out as a fertilized egg. They transition to Gastrula, then become a 4-armed pluteus, next they are an 8-armed pluteus. In main part of their lives, they become early juvenile, followed by late juvenile, finally they are adults. These adults produce fertilized eggs, and the cycle begins again.

PREDATORS & PREY Sea urchins have spiny shells for protection and many have poisonous soft spines. Their predators include crabs, fish, otters, eels and humans. Sea urchins are omnivores, which means that they eat plants and animals such as, algae, coral, rocks, read fish, mussels and barnacles.

LIVIN’ IN THE ZONE Sea urchins live in the water, but not in fresh water. Sea urchins live in the ocean anywhere from upper intertidal zones to deep ocean floors. They live all around the world in various ocean environments.

SEA URCHIN DIVERSITY There are over 200 species of sea urchins. They can be lots of different colors from sand colored to bright pinks and dark purples. Sea urchins can grow from 3 cm to 10 cm round. They can live up to 200 years in the wild, but most species only live for 30 years. DEAR EDIE Submitted by Edie Lodis SEA URCHINS ON THE MOVE Sea urchins have five sets of “legs” on each of the five equal sections of their bodies. Sea urchin “legs” are really tubes that they use to propel themselves across the ocean floor.

DANGER? Should you be afraid of sea urchins? No! The poison in sea urchin spines is only dangerous to most fish. Clown fish (like Nemo) are immune to sea urchin poison like humans. But, if you step on a sea urchin on the ocean floor, you can have their spines break off in you and it will really hurt, but it won’t kill you. Enjoy looking at sea urchins, but don’t touch!
