Arab-West Report, May 26, 2014 St. Demiana’s Monastery: an oasis of spirituality Author: Weston Bland Photos: Weston Bland On Friday, May 16, as part of a group of diverse national and religious background, I had the opportunity to attend the moulid, or festival, of St. Demiana [Dimyana] at her namesake monastery in the villaGe of Demiana in the district Barrary-Belqas in the Egyptian Delta. In general, the trip, orGanized by the Center for Arab-West Understanding, provided a fascinatinG look into the dynamics of a popular reliGious celebration, as well as into the lives of the nuns that live and work on the grounds of the monastery. St. Demiana’s festival is a popular Christian celebration that attracts larGe numbers of visitors every year. Traditionally, the celebrations include activities both within the monastery complex, as well as on the Grounds surroundinG the complex. This year however, the outside celebrations were significantly scaled back due to security concerns; these concerns were underscored by the heavy security presence we encountered at the perimeter of the festival Grounds upon arrivinG. Ultimately though, such concerns seemed to have had little effect in deterring the significant crowds of the faithful that still turned out for the celebration. Crowds inside the monastery; photo: Mother Theoliptie photo: Weston Bland External festival Grounds; photo: Mother Theoliptie After enterinG the monastery complex, we were quickly directed to the primary church where prayers were taking place. In the front of the hall, our group was given a brief audience with Metropolitan Bishoy, the Orthodox Metropolitan for Damietta, Kafr al-Sheikh, and the abbot of the monastery.

Meawad Follow this and additional works at: https://digitalcommons.sacredheart.edu/cath_fac Part of the Christian Denominations and Sects Commons, Environmental Studies Commons, and the Ethics in Religion Commons 1 Stephen M. Meawad Liturgy as Ethicizer: Cultivating Ecological Consciousness through a Coptic Orthodox Liturgical Ethos 1 – Introduction Eastern Orthodox Christianity’s recent expression of its ecological concern has been vast and strong, evidenced by its designation of September 1st as a day of prayer for the “protection of the environment” and also through the scholarly contributions of more than a dozen theologians and religious figures, including Patriarch Bartholomew, Elizabeth Theokritoff, and John Chryssavgis.1 Much of this witness can and does extend to Oriental Orthodoxy in numerous respects.2 Among others, some examples include similarities in the doctrine of creation, proper relation to non-human animals, spiritual degradation as a precursor to ecological degradation, and extending love of neighbor to include all of creation. Yet, analyzing ways that other families of Orthodoxy conceive of the relationship between ecology and theology—a promising endeavor—has remained largely untapped contemporarily. This project will examine the liturgical ethos of the Coptic Orthodox Church and how this ethos is effective in creating self-sustaining, ecologically aware communities. A more comprehensive version of this project would develop what might be called a politeia (behavior or ethos of a given community) of the Coptic Orthodox Church that would include monasticism and asceticism; fasting; agriculture and co-stewardship; and self-sustenance.

Prof. Dr. Daniel BUDA SUMMARY of abilitation thesis ANTIOCH – ecclesial and theological center of multiple valences This habilitation thesis presents in summary the main results of my researches on the history and theology of Antioch as a Christian center. The main scientific principals I followed in my research were: a multi-perspective analyse of the available historical sources in order to avoid any unilateral interpretation; a coherent connection between church history and general history of Antioch; good knowledge of archaeological remains related with Antioch through visits to Antioch; direct knowledge of the present situation of the Patriarchate of Antioch due to visits in the Middle East, as well as to Antiochian communities in diaspora. The first part is dedicated to the pre-Christian history of Antioch and its importance for the knowledge of the Christian history of Antioch. I briefly presented the history of the foundation of Antioch and some essential information related with its geographical sides, the suburbia in order to understand the importance of Antioch as an urban center of the Orient before Christianity. I highlighted also the ethnic and religious diversity of the pre-Christian Antioch in order to understand the cosmopolite character of this city at the beginning of Christian era. At the end of the first part I presented the implication of this diversity for the rise of Christianity in this city: (1) Christianity did know how to

Cairo‘s Tahrir Square and the Kasr Dobara Evangelical Church (KDEC) continued to be the principle focal points up to and including the June 30 uprising some three years later. During this period of massive change in the history of Egypt, the Coptic church realized the need for political action in the face of persecution, and Kasr Dobara Evangelical Church was a focal example of leadership and service in this new Christian activism. For the first time in the history of Christianity in Egypt, Christians ventured out of the sanctuary of their churches to protest against the traditional oppression of government. The theological understanding and leadership provided by the pastors, leaders, and members of KDEC encouraged significant change, including a new rapprochement between

The answer is simple. Five years later, violent extremism is still an issue. In September 2014, President Obama spoke at the United Nations, calling on member nations to do more to address violent extremism. This was followed by a three-day summit in February 2015 to bring together local, federal, and international leaders to discuss approaches to counter violent extremism.
