Wickham was once a fording point on the River Meon for the Roman road from Chichester (Noviomagus Regnorum) to Winchester (Venta Belgarum). While the route Winchester to the village has since been lost, local roads use the route from Wickham to Chichester to this day.

The first written record of the village is in an Anglo-Saxon Royal Charter document from 826. Following the Norman Conquest, the Manor of Wickham was granted to Hugo de Port and the village was listed in the Doomsday Book of 1086, as part of the Hundred of Titchfield.

In 1269 King Henry III granted a charter that allowed markets to be held in Wickham on Thursdays. This is when the layout of the market square and surrounding village began to take shape. Wickham’s village square is one of the largest in Britain and is a fascinating mix of architectural styles.

The village was home to William of Wykeham (1320 or 1324-1404), who, under the reign of Edward III, rose from humble beginnings to become administrator and supervisor of royal building works. He was later appointed Bishop of Winchester, before taking the role of Chancellor of in 1367.

Close to the market square is Chesapeake Mill, a former flour mill that dates from 1820. The mill was built using timbers from The Chesapeake, an American frigate captured by the Royal Navy in 1813 during the War of 1812 (1812-1815) and remained operational until 1976. Antiques are now sold from the Grade II listed building, which is one of the village’s must-see attractions.
