A note on the Strategic Research Plan: The new University Strategic Research Plan (SRP) has been in development for the past two years, and has benefited greatly • Research Lounge from input from across the University community. The Research Committee has asked that the Research Office begin work on the SRP Implementation to guide the Conversation, coffee, and community. new SRP once it is approved. The SRP Implementation will benefit from the many conversations about research we have been having these past few years, notably the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives and knowledges and the Research Space Allocation project. Important issues have been raised regarding faculty December 14th, 2:00-3:00 pm and student engagement in research, scholarly and creative activities, and our responsibility as public scholars to advance knowledge. Since the beginning of the term OCAD researchers have submitted applications for 4 SSHRC Insight Grants, 2 SSHRC Connection Grants, 2 SSHRC Partnership Engage Grants, 3 OCE VIP 1 grants, and individual grant submissions to CUTRIC and the Academy of Architecture for Health Foundation.

Announcing the recipients of the 2018 OCAD University Research Seed Grant The OCAD University Internal Seed Grant program is meant to support research projects for which there is currently no other funding available. The program is closely modeled after the SSHRC Insight Development Grant Program and is open to all tenured, tenure-track, or CLTA faculty members.

Grant recipients from the 2018 competition include Dr. David McIntosh, Dr. James Miller, Dr. Selmin Kara, Ranee Lee, Dr. Suzanne Stein, and co-applicants Saskia Van Kampen and Cheryl Giraudy. “Culture Creates Bonds” project featured in the and Toronto “Culture Creates Bonds”, a research project that focuses on arts and culture activity within communities, was featured in a Toronto Star article. Star reporter Donovan Vincent interviewed Dr. Sara Diamond as part of a story on recently awarded research grants from Sidewalk Labs. Diamond, along with her co-PI Dr. Alia Weston and Adjunct Professor Marcus Gordon, is leading a study which will concentrate on defining a specific set of key drivers, scenarios, and conditions that create natural human bonds in a residential or immediate neighbourhood. Weston spoke about the project in an interview with Gill Deacon of the CBC’s Here and Now Toronto. Lynne Heller Opens Exhibition at FENTSTER Multi-disciplinary artist Dr. Lynne Heller has created an original, layered installation for the FENTSTER window gallery, bringing together collaged photographs and drawings that mine childhood memories and reflect the volatility of nature, community and identity. The exhibition, titled “Suspended”, draws upon recollections from Lynne’s childhood at Camp Naivelt (Yiddish for “New World”), a summertime family retreat in Brampton focused on secularist, socialist values, activism, and a celebration of Jewish and Yiddish culture. “Suspended” runs from November 12, 2018 – February 12, 2019 and had its opening night on Tuesday, November 20th from 7:00-9:00pm. Ryan Rice Hosts the first gathering for INUIT FUTURES IN ARTS LEADERSHIP: THE PILIMMAKSARNIQ/ PIJARIUQSARNIQ PROJECT Between October 16th and October 20th 2018 Ryan Rice, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Sciences, School of Interdisciplinary Studies (formerly Delaney Chair), hosted the first gathering for the Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership: The Pilimmaksarniq/Pijariuqsarniq Project. The gathering brought together partners working on the research project (including co-investigators at Concordia University and event co-hosts The Inuit Art Quarterly/Inuit Art Foundation) with OCAD U Indigenous faculty, chairs, deans, and upper administration. The project, which is funded by a Partnership Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, seeks to address the longstanding absence of Inuit leadership across the humanities by establishing a culturally, socially and geographically relevant partnered research training initiative to provide meaningful opportunities for education and advancement. iCITY project team conducts King Street Pilot Survey The Visual Analytics Lab’s large urban design project, iCITY, saw its researchers conduct a survey of pedestrians on King Street this past October, seeking opinions on the effectiveness of the King Street Pilot and redesign. Dr. Yoav Friedman Tours OCAD U Research Spaces On November 1st, 2018, Dr. Yoav Friedman, Head, Research and Innovation Authority at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, toured OCAD U’s research facilities as part of a research exchange agreement between the institutions. Yoav had an opportunity to visit ACE Lab, game:play Lab, Super Ordinary Lab, Visual Analytics Lab, Strategic Innovation Lab, the Health Design Studio and the Inclusive Design Research Centre. Dr. Alexis Morris and Nadine Lessio presented at the 2nd International Workshop on Multimedia Privacy and Security On October 15th 2018 Dr. Morris and Nadine Lessio of ACE Lab presented a paper at the 2nd International Workshop on Multimedia Privacy and Security titled “Deriving Privacy and Security Considerations for CORE: An Indoor IoT Adaptive Context Environment”. The MPS 2018 was held in Toronto and focused on the security and privacy issues that have developed as our society becomes increasingly interconnected. Dr. Dot Tuer and Dr. Keith Bresnahan speak about sabbatical research Dr. Dot Tuer and Dr. Keith Bresnahan spoke about their respective sabbatticals on Monday, November 19th 2018 from 3:00pm to 5:00pm at 205 Richmond St. West, Room 420. Tuer’s talk, titled “Traces and Talismans: Reflections on Witnessing and the Performing of Memory”, addressed site-specific research that she undertook for her half sabbatical in the winter/spring of 2016. Bresnahan’s talk “Working with Emotions in Architectural History” explored his engagement with new research into the history of emotions and his attempt to bring this into conversation with architectural history over the period of his 2016-17 sabbatical, which included fellowships in Berlin and southern France.

Inclusive Design Research Centre has a booth at Parliament of the World’s Religions 2018 Conference

The IDRC’s project “Our Doors are Open” aims to help faith communities better understand how to fully include people with disabilities. As part of the project activities, “Our Doors Are Open” had a booth at the 2018 Parliament of the World’s Religions conference. The “Open Your Doors” community-inclusion workshop was designed specifically to help individual faith communities, enabling them to reach out to their members with disabilities and allow them to assess the physical and social inclusivity of a faith community.
