The British Science Festival is Europe’s largest celebration of science, technology and engineering. Each year it takes place in a different area of the UK. This year we are delighted to bring the Festival to Bradford in West Yorkshire. This year’s young people’s programme is brought to you in association with Space Connections Enterprises. Workshops, talks and shows, delivered by the best the UK has to offer, focus on the practical applications of science learnt in the classroom, offer students novel and fun ways to explore the world around them and open up a world of possibilities for careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

AS and A-level students will be inspired by our young Award Lecturers. Competition is fierce for these awards and nominees are judged on how interesting their research is and how well they can communicate it to a general audience. Expect a fascinating story of new research and lots of audience participation.

The Award Lectures take place at lunchtime each day. The five categories are:

Joseph Lister Award - Charles Darwin Award - Social sciences Agricultural, biological and medical sciences Isambard Kingdom Brunel Award - Engineering, technology and Lord Kelvin Award - industry Physical sciences and mathematics Charles Lyell Award - Environmental sciences

Visit the website www.britishsciencefestival.org Professor Brian Cox pictured won to be one of the first to find out who has won these prestigious the Lord Kelvin Award in 2006. Awards, and book in your group when you make your booking.

A MULTIMEDIA MATHEMATICS COMPETITION If you're a student from a secondary school in West Yorkshire then you are eligible for the X and Y Factor competition. Make a film clip, game, poster or write an article to show how intriguing maths can be. The competition will close in May 2011. Winners will be selected by the end of June 2011 in order that the best entries can be showcased at a glittering award ceremony at the National Media Museum on Tuesday 13th September 11.00 – 2pm during the British Science Festival. There will be great MYSTERY PRIZES and trophies. The competition is aiming to get students enthusiastic about maths. The process of making the ‘pop maths’ will engage students in maths in a novel way. For further details about the competition and a registration pack please e-mail [email protected]
