IN THE TRENCHES: WEEK 4 OUTLAND TROPHY MATCHUPS PRESENTED BY THE NATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASES Stanford at Oregon, 8 p.m. ET on ABC It’s a Pac-12 clash in the Pacific Northwest that has the Outland Trophy’s eyes on it this week as Stanford and Oregon meet. Both schools have had recent Outland success, and this game features a rare paring of two of the country’s most experienced centers, as well as two of its brightest. Stanford’s Jesse Burkett (St. Augustine, Fla.) and Oregon’s Jake Hanson (Eureka, Calif.) would make an imaginary Outland Trophy All-Academic team.. Burkett returned to the lineup in last week’s win over UC Davis after an injury held him out the first two games. Burkett is a fifth-year senior with a double major in Japanese and Symbolic Systems (which he has explained as an intradisciplinary combining computer science, psychology, philosophy and linguistics). A three-year letterman, Burkett (6-4, 300) earned the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America second team and is a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic team member. Meanwhile, Hanson has 28 straight starts for the Ducks. The 6-5, 297-pounder is a two-time Academic All-Pac-12 selection and was an honorable mention All-Pac-12 player in 2016 and ‘17. He is a product of the Ducks’ patience on its line along with right tackle Calvin Throckmorton (Bellevue, Wash.), also a two-year letterman. Hanson and Throckmorton both redshirted as freshmen in 2015 but have started ever since. Throckmorton (6-5, 318) has 28 consecutive starts, three at right guard and 25 at right tackle. He too won CoSIDA honors as an Academic All-District 8 pick in 2017. Burkett will have to contend most plays with Oregon nose tackle Jordan Scott (Largo, Fla.), a quickly-ascending sophomore that Oregon couldn’t keep out of the starting lineup for the final 11 games as a true freshman last year. Scott’s play earned him a spot on the Fresh- man All-American team from the Football Writers Association of America. He set career highs in tackles (7) and tackles for loss (1.5) against Bowling Green in Oregon’s opener. His 6-1, 329-pound size makes for an intriguing matchup opposite Burkett at center. Four of Stanford’s top-10 team rushing totals have come the past two seasons with Burkett and Nate Herbig (Kalaheo, Hawaii) starting on its offensive line. Herbig, a junior nicknamed “Big Island” at 6-4 and 344 pounds, is a preseason AP All-American coming off an All- Pac-12 First Team season along with Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention. He has 16 consecutive starts at right guard (18 total) and in 2016 was the first true freshman to start on Stanford’s offensive line since 2012 and only the second since 2000. Stanford’s won the Outland Trophy in 2015, David DeCastro was a finalist in 2011 and David Yankey a semifinalist in 2013. All three were guards. No Oregon player has won the Outland, but the Ducks had Jake Fisher as a semifinalist in 2014 and as a 2005 finalist. Clemson at Georgia Tech, 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC/ESPN2 Clemson may still be sorting its quarterback situation out, but there’s no questions along its offensive line. Or its defensive line, as both are considered to be among the best on either side of the ball. This is the first time for Clemson’s outstanding linemen, left tackle (Suwanee, Ga.) and center Justin Falcinelli (Middleton, Md.) on offense, and end (Richmond, Va.) and tackle (Wake Forest, N.C.) on defense, to face another Outland Watch List member. All four Tigers players are on multiple preseason All-America teams, although as an end Ferrell is not eligible for the Outland. Georgia Tech left guard Parker Braun (Hallsville, Texas) will have his hands full. Braun, a 6-3, 280-pound junior, has 22 consecutive starts at guard since the middle of the 2016 season. He earned the ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week award twice last year, the second time after taking 22 Pitt defenders to the ground as Georgia Tech amassed 436 rushing yards in a 35-17 win. Clemson has won three straight games against Georgia Tech but trails by 21 games in the series and is 13-44-2 all-time in Atlanta. The home team has won eight of the last nine in the series. Neither Clemson nor Georgia Tech has had an Outland Trophy winner, but both have had finalists: Clemson’s Stacy Long (1990) and (1987) and Georgia Tech’s Craig Page (1998).

OTHER MATCHUPS OF NOTE ... • N.C. State at Marshall, 7 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network: (Charlotte, N.C.) started his career as a 250-pound tight end at N.C. State. After a redshirt freshman season, injuries hampered his 2015 season. In his sophomore 2016 season, Bradbury moved to left guard having played only 36 career snaps and has been a starter ever since. The team captain and graduate student moved to center in 2017, played in 98 percent of the offensive snaps and was a first-team All-ACC choice by the media. Matching up against Bradbury will be nose tackle Ryan Bee (Ashland, Ohio), who is expected to return to Marshall’s lineup for its featured home game against an ACC foe. Bee has 31 career starts. • Ohio at Cincinnati, 12 p.m. ET on ESPNU: There are five Outland Trophy Watch List members in Ohio, and two of them face each other as the Bearcats face the Bobcats. Cincinnati nose tackle Marquise Copeland (Cleveland, Ohio) has started 15 consecutive games for the Bearcats and is tied for the team lead with 14 tackles, nine of them solo. Copeland led Cincinnati with seven tackles in its big win at UCLA three weeks ago. On the opposite line is left tackle Joe Lowery (Tallmage, Ohio), a second-year team captain whose 6-7, 310-pound frame has helped Ohio average 34.5 points per game. Lowery was Second-Team All-MAC last year and has started in 28 of the last 29 games as Ohio posted school records in total points and rushing touchdowns in 2017.
