Coats Committee Chair Department Chair Dean of the Graduate School May 2018 COPYRIGHT BY Ecaterina Stepaniuc 2018 Published by the Graduate School ABSTRACT This dissertation work seeks to analyze the implications of government and independent owned media outlets framing democracy in the Republic of Moldova from 1991 until 2014. Existing literature reports on the decisive role media played in the process of democratization when referring to former Soviet republics. To understand the role Moldovan media played in the democratization process, the author applied content analysis of three print publications and one televised news program to examine Moldova’s democracy between 1991 and 2014. The sample consisted of 346 Mesager script news stories aired on the public TV station in Moldova, and 608 newspaper articles and editorials printed in three national newspapers, Glasul Națiunii, Timpul de Dimineață and Moldova Suverană. The findings indicate that each news outlet framed democracy differently, mainly depending on the medium’s political interests and policies. Glasul Națiunii associated democracy with Moldova reuniting with Romania. Moldova Suverană as a government publication presented democracy positively, while as an independent publication framed democracy negatively. Timpul de Dimineață endorsed a balanced agenda when it came to presenting democracy to the Moldovan people and referred to both, positive and negative portrayals. Overall, the message on democracy evolved from a positive frame with Moldovan people welcoming the new governance system, to a negative frame indicating Moldova’s democracy stagnation. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I am fortunate to have worked with an incredible team of professors and media professionals throughout my doctorate study. In the period of 1-2 April in Chisinau was held the third Fighting Irregular Migration in Moldova- FIRMM training for judges. The overall objective of the event was to provide an overview on the principle standards for migrants’ protection under the Council of Europe tools, with a special focus on the European Convention of Human Rights (ECtHR). The seminar topic was chosen at the special request of the Moldovan National Institute of Justice, based on the need to enhance the acquaintance of judges and prosecutors with the CoE standards and European Court of Human Rights jurisprudence. Experts from Human Rights Directorate of the Council of Europe, Strasbourg and a lawyer from the European Court of Human Rights delivered presentations on the main instruments and handbooks of the CoE concerning the status of migrants. The discussions were based on the international jurisprudence and the national judicial practice. An added value of the seminar was the practical talks on selected migrants-related case law, processed in the ECtHR. As well at the seminar was presented the draft of the Resource book on human rights protection of migrants’ for judiciary developed within the project and planned to be printed in the next few months.     INTRODUCTION Moldavia, the smallest republic in the Soviet Union, has been a territorial football between Romania and Russia for well over 100 years. Like the Baltic republics, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence under the l939 Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, and there is reason to believe that some Moldavians may now wish to follow the lead of the Baltic republics in pressing for secession from the USSR. The 64 percent of the republic's population that is ethnic Moldavian has its cultural heart in Romania and, at the very least, seeks freer contacts with Romanians across their common frontier. In the past 18 months Moldavian political and social life has been transformed. Fledgling independent groups have developed into major new political movements, such as the Moldavian Popular Front with a membership of between 700,000 and one million. Other independent groups include the Alexe Mateevici Club which led the successful drive to establish Moldavian as the official language of the republic, the Moldavian Democratic Movement aimed at establishing a state that adheres to the rule of law, the Moldavian Green Movement which works to increase public awareness of ecological issues, and others. Groups of citizens in late l988 began braving the wrath of the local authorities by organizing small public protests. By March l989 the rallies had grown to include as many as 80,000 demonstrators who were calling, among other things, for the i removal of Moldavia's Party leaders. Both the protestors and the Moldavian government often turned to violence. The most egregious such instances of reciprocal violence occurred in l989 on February 12 and 26, March 12 and November 7.

    ASSOCIAZIONE ITALIANA DI ARCHEOMETRIA CONVEGNO TEMATICO MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE REGGIO CALABRIA 27 – 29 MARZO 2019 Carissimi, Il convegno AIAr 2019, avrà luogo all’interno della splendida cornice del Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Reggio Calabria, recentemente inserito tra i cinque Musei di arte antica più belli ed entusiasmanti d’Italia. Obiettivo del convegno è promuovere il confronto fra ricercatori, studiosi ed operatori che lavorano nel campo della ricerca per i Beni Culturali, focalizzando l’attenzione sulle nuove tecnologie, i materiali innovativi e le strategie adottate per la diagnostica e la conservazione dei beni conservati ed esposti in ambito museale. E’anche la prima volta che un convegno AIAr esce dalle accademie e dagli istituti preposti alla ricerca per spostarsi all’interno di un Museo determinando in qualche modo un’inversione di punto di vista. Come ogni evento che l’AIAr, ormai da decenni propone, anche questo convegno vuole essere occasione per far risaltare l’importante ruolo che la divulgazione e la diffusione delle metodologie scientifiche applicate allo studio del patrimonio culturale possono giocare nella conoscenza, nella fruizione e nella valorizzazione del nostro patrimonio culturale. Ulteriore momento di approfondimento sarà la tavola rotonda prevista per il 28 marzo dal titolo: L’archeometria: un valore aggiunto per la valorizzazione dei musei, con la partecipazione di alcuni direttori di importanti strutture museali italiane e di scienziati e studiosi, nella quale saranno analizzate le migliori e più innovative strategie di valorizzazione dei numerosi reperti presenti nei musei, enfatizzando la necessità di lavorare in team multidisciplinari per raggiungere l’obiettivo di una maggiore fruizione del patrimonio culturale.

Trubceac A key social driver in The Republic of Moldova, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, has been the establishment of a state education system that emphasizes cultural pluralism and interculturalism. Educational research about the Republic of Moldova shows an increased motivation among contemporary secondary education social studies teachers to incorporate multicultural education and to enhance their professional skills in helping students to deal with violence, conflicts, and interethnic, linguistic, and cultural tensions. In the Republic of Moldova, secondary education social studies are required by the state education system to teach civic and citizenship education for the purpose of developing a harmonious society.
