WARP - The parallel threads running through the entire length of the rug onto which the knots are tied. B. These are: 1) Preparing Materials 2) Building a Frame 3) Preparing a Work Surface 4) Cutting and Tracing the Pattern 5) Hooking the Rug 6) Putting on the Backing and Finishing Touches 1) Preparing Materials • Use two-by-two inch pieces of wood for the frame • Make the frame slightly bigger than the rug • Use nails to attach the frame • Use burlap or jute for the frame’s backing • Use corduroy or denim to reinforce the frame’s border • Use quilting or upholstery thread to stitch the border • Use sealed wax to bind the border to the burlap/jute backing • Use wool or string to lace the burlap border to the frame • Use various big-eyed needles and a thimble for the lacing process • Use paper to make the pattern • Use paper scissors to cut out the pattern • Use small or large straight pins to pin down the pattern • Use sharp scissors to cut all fabric • Use a rug-hooking tool to begin the rug-hooking process • Rug-hooking tools can be found at craft or carpet stores, or can be made from a cork and a nail • Use various colours of cotton t-shirts for materials • Cut the seams out of the t-shirts, and then cut the material into thumb width strips • The strips can be rolled into balls for easy storage 2) Building a Frame • Make an adjustable frame by drilling holes in the wood • Use a nut and a bolt to adjust the frame’s size • If the frame is to be used only once, nail it together 3) Preparing a Work Surface • Choose either burlap or jute (which is finer grained) • Then -

The Threshing Barn Craft Workshop News and Calendar Summer to Winter 2013 On the Move We have decided to sell the farm and move on to the next exciting adventure (watch this space). The Threshing Barn will be coming with me, so don’t panic you’ll still be able to get your supplies. So would you be interested to follow your dream of running a small holding of 36 acres with the workshop? You could live in a beautiful upgraded Grade 2 listed farmhouse full of old features. In the courtyard are the buildings we have used for the craft workshop with business use planning on. Then there’s the original Threshing Barn ready for conversion subject to planning permission. There are 2 new agricultural barns and secure workshop. We have lived here for nearly 16 years running our vision for a sustainable farm and associated craft business. My children live in Australia, Hong Kong and London and now being a grannie I want to spend more time with them and this is not possible with livestock. Contact us for details of our agents. ABSTRACT Jaganathan, Sudhakar. Characterization Methods and Physical Properties of Novelty yarn. (Under the guidance of Dr. William Oxenham) The purpose of this work is to find the characterization methods which quantitatively define the inherent properties of novelty yarn. The research was divided in to two parts. In the first part various instrumental methods and techniques were investigated to characterize the physical properties of the novelty yarns. Various structural properties of gimp and slub yarns were defined and characterized. Instrumental method included CTT Tester, Hairiness tester and a Traveling Microscope. An image analysis algorithm was proposed to measure the size distribution of novelty yarn structural effects. In the second part visual perception of novelty yarn texture was characterized. A texture nomenclature based on the theory of “Textons” was developed. A human psychological survey was conducted to get observers response on texture terms. We proposed various image analysis methods to quantitatively characterize the novelty yarn texture. The image analysis method had good correlation with human psychological response on the novelty yarn texture. “We are the Rug Hooking Capital of the World”: Understanding Chéticamp Rugs (1927-2017) by © Laura Marie Andrea Sanchini A thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies In partial fulfilment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Folklore Memorial University December 3rd, 2018 St John’s Newfoundland Abstract This thesis is the story of how utilitarian material culture was transformed into a cottage industry, and eventually into high art. Chéticamp rug hooking is an artistic practice, one wrapped up in issues of taste, creativity, class and economics. Rug hooking in Chéticamp rose to prominence in the first half of the 20th century when Lillian Burke, a visiting American artist, set up a rug hooking cottage industry in the area. She altered the tradition to suit the tastes of wealthy patrons, who began buying the rugs to outfit their homes. This thesis examines design in rug hooking focusing on Chéticamp-style rugs. Captured within design aesthetics is what the rugs mean to both those who make and consume them. For tourists, the rugs are symbols of a perceived anti-modernism. Through the purchase of a hooked rug, they are able to bring home material reminders of their moment of experience with rural Nova Scotia. For rug hookers, rugs are a symbol of economic need, but also agency and the ability to overcome depressed rural economic conditions. Rug hooking was a way to have a reliable income in an area where much of the labour is dependent on unstable sources, such as natural resources (fishing, lumber, agriculture etc.). -

Sugar Season Retreat Schedule and Class Descriptions FRIDAY EVENING (5:30-9:00): Gather at the Putney Cares Barn at 5:30 p.m. for a relaxed dinner featuring local produce. SATURDAY 9:00 am -12:00 pm Title: Introduction to Vertically Stranded Colorwork Description: Explore various ways that color can be added when contrasting stitches climb vertically from round to round. In this morning session we'll explore its sketchy history. Vertically stranded color work is used in Rovaniemi knitting, as a substitute for duplicate stitch in argyle, and it even appears in a Japanese stitch dictionary. We'll learn how to manage the strands and how to address the stitches so things operate smoothly for you. This is fun to do, and not difficult if only a couple rules are learned early. We'll play with simple zigs and zags, color between lace, and purl-only columns that look like caterpillars. These techniques do not inhibit the elasticity of the fabric. Most students will tackle three motifs during this session. Materials: Yarn will be provided. Handouts provided. To work in the round using worsted weight yarn and a circumference of about eight inches, bring whatever needles you are currently competent and comfortable using—DPN's, two circulars, or one 32" long circular for Magic Loop knitting. Choose one or two sizes smaller than you normally use with worsted weight wool—3.75 or 4mm/US 5 or 6, as we prefer snug stitches; blunt tipped tapestry needle.
