To advance knowledge of bat diversity in the country, a survey of bats from three localites:—Emu, Okomu Natonal Park (ONP), and Ososo—in southern Nigeria was conducted using mist nets set at canopy and at ground level from February–September 2011. During 28 capture nights involving a total of 202.7 mist net/nights, 239 individuals belonging to 27 bat species in eight families (Emballonuridae, Hipposideridae, Megadermatdae, Molossidae, Nycteridae, Pteropodidae, Rhinolophidae, and Vespertlionidae) were recorded. A total of 130, 64, 45 individuals of 8, 13 and 11 species were recorded from Emu, Okomu, and Ososo, respectvely. Two new country records, Casinycteris campomaanensis and Chaerephon aloysiisabaudiae, both collected from Okomu Natonal Park, are reported for Nigeria. Whereas the former species was collected in a canopy high stacked mist net setup, the later was collected in a ground level mist net, demonstratng the value of employing contemporary and complementary sampling techniques especially in such understudied regions of Africa. Dedicated to capacity building over the past three decades, he has trained several postgraduate students, with a publicaton record on the ecology of aquatc fauna and the impact of polluton on aquatc and terrestrial systems. Paul J.J. Bates trained as a small mammal/bat taxonomist. He has published extensively on the diversity, distributon and ecology of bats and rodents in Asia, Arabia and Africa. Through a series of internatonally funded projects, he has promoted capacity building, academic supervision and postgraduate training of young scientsts and conservatonists in the Old World tropics. Today, he works with a new generaton of in-country staf and students to preserve and protect wildlife and the environment in Africa and Asia. The burden of this paper therefore is to lay bare the indispensable role of English - a global dynamic language and language of globalization - in the i •• exploitation of tourism wealth of Nigeria, and in selling these bounties to world civilization for document. In the final analysis the paper makes the following declarations. We could practically do nothing without language. It is rather impossible that we could successfully discuss Tourism as an academic discipline in Nigeria in isolation of language, vis-a-vis, English, the arrowhead and 'DNA' of culture. In the same vein, it is rather a tragic mission to explore the bounties of Tourism in Nigeria and make same available to the global village outside the English language medium, in view of Nigeria's status as among the fifty-four member nations of the Commonwealth.

Data for the study were collected using two sets of structured questionnaires and secondary data obtained from administrative records. A set of structured questionnaires was administered randomly to 30% of households in ten selected communities close to the park. The second set of questionnaires was administered to 30% of the staff in park protection section of KLNP. In all 403 households and 53 staff members were sampled. Data on poaching arrest were obtained from administrative records. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics in form of frequencies of count, percentages, graphs, bar chart and pie chart. Grazing of livestock and hunting were the form of encroachment most arrested in the park between 2001 and 2009.

Introduction Mineral elements occur in the living tissues or soil in either large or small quantities. Those that occur in large quantities are called macro/major elements while those that occur in small quantities are called micro/minor/trace elements. These macro elements are required in large amount and the micro are required in small amount (Underwood, 1977, Alloway, 1990,) They occur in the tissues of plants and animals in varied concentrations. The magnitude of this concentration varies greatly among different living organisms and part of the organisms (W.B.E, 1995). Although most of the naturally occurring mineral elements are found in the animal tissues, many are present merely because they are constituents of the animal’s food and may not have essential function in the metabolism of the animals. Hence essential mineral elements refer to as mineral elements are those which had been proven to have a metabolic role in the body (McDonald, 1987). The essential minerals elements are necessary to life for work such as enzyme and hormone metabolisms (W.B.E, 1995). Enzymes are activated by trace elements known as metallo enzymes (Mertz, 1996). Ingestion or uptake of minerals that are deficient, inbalanced, or excessively high in a particular mineral element induces changes in the functions, activities, or concentration of that element in the body tissue or fluids.

Urge for propagation and sustainability of wild flora and fauna brought about conservation practices that led to designating particular locations for their keeping. These areas are set aside to maintain functioning natural ecosystems to act as refuge for species and to maintain ecological processes. Forest and game reserves are the first protected areas created and maintained in Nigeria. They existed long before the creation of national parks in the country. Most of the game and forest reserves were upgraded and enacted to the status of national parks. In some situations like in Kainji Lake National park, Borgu Game Reserve and Zuguruma forest reserve were merged and enacted with decree No 46 of 1979 to be a national park. Large scale degradation of wild animal natural habitats coupled with continuous overhunting and poaching have resulted in more species becoming endangered in recent times in Nigeria according to recent surveys by WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society, Nigeria). The National Parks Service being the highest conservation agency in the country becomes the major fortress for conserving these endangered species, alongside collaborative efforts from non-governmental conservation agencies like NCF (Nigerian Conservation Foundation) and others. This review paper became necessary to re-emphasise the need for more awareness on the risks involved if the unabated exploitation of our wild fauna resources continues. The paper concludes by offering suggestions on how the conservation agenda can continue in the country through existing Parks and Zoos development, through ecotourism with more media awareness, basic wildlife education in schools, improved research and a better enforcement of existing wild animals’ protection laws.

Akande* Federal College of Wildlife Management, Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria, P.M.B 268, New-Bussa, Nigeria *E-mail address: [email protected] ABSTRACT Assessment of abundance and distribution of Patas monkey in Kainji Lake National Park (Zugurma sector) was carried out from March to July, 2019. Data were collected using direct sighting (Census by Ground Survey Method) and line transect method using the existing jeep tracks. The location was transverse in the morning between (7:00 and 11:00 a.m.) and in the evening (16:00 to 18:30 p.m.), binocular was used for viewing of animals. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of table and frequency count. The spatial distribution of Patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas) in the study area revealed that Mayara track had the highest percentage (32.2%), followed by Abubakar mashegu track with (27.1%) while Etsu usman track recorded the least percentage (16.9%). It also indicates that month of April had the highest number (20) while the month of July 2019 recorded the least one with (8). The population structure revealed that female had the highest frequency 34, followed by male recorded frequency with 25 while young had the least frequency 15. The food eaten by Patas monkey in the study area are Cercocephalis laurifolis, Piper guineenis, Vitelaria paradoxa, Tarminrandus indica, Annona senegalensis and Ficus species, respectively.

    NIGERIA FIRST NATIONAL BIODIVERSITY REPORT JULY 2001 1.0 INTRODUCTION Nigeria is located in the western part of Africa between latitudes 4 ° 16 ´N and 13 °52 ´N; and between longitudes 2 °49 ´E and 14 °37 ´E. It occupies a total land area of 923,768km 2 with a population of 120million people. By virtue of its geographical extent, it spans different climatic and ecological zones. The variable climatic conditions and physical features have endowed Nigeria with a very rich biodiversity. The mean annual rainfall ranges from about 450 mm in the northeast to about 3500 mm in the coastal south-east, with rains falling within 90 to 290 days respectively. The mean annual temperature ranges from 21 °C in the south to 30 °C in the north with extremes of 14 °C and 45 °C and an altitude range of 0 - 1000m above sea level. At the current annual growth rate of 2.8%, the country’s population may reach 150 million by the year 2010. Consequently, the demand for food, fuel-wood and other biological resources will experience a corresponding increase and this will lead to increased pressure on land, water and other resources. Thus the high rate of population growth is crucial among the set of factors that degrade the environment and threaten biodiversity in Nigeria. Although Nigeria derives about 80% of its external earnings from the oil sector, agriculture contributes about 38% of the GDP. About 70% of the population derives their means of livelihood from agriculture, and the economy is characterized by a large rural based traditional sector.

INTRODUCTION Nigeria’s rapid population growth and rate of urbanization are key drivers of the pressure on the demand for decent and affordable housing and other social infrastructure. According to the worldometer ‘s presentation of United Nations data, the country has an estimated total population of about 200 million people with population growth rate of about 2.6%. This is marked by an increasing rate of urbanization estimated at about 4.3% per annum, with the urban population estimated at about 50.3% in 2018. This situation has resulted in a huge housing deficit, with an estimated shortage of about 17 million housing units as at 2019. In response to this growing social infrastructure deficit, the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) has launched a number of initiatives, including Family Homes Funds Limited (FHFL) to help address the housing shortage. FHFL was established in 2016, as a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to act as a catalyst to the delivery of affordable housing nationwide. The overall mission of FHFL is to provide 500,000 affordable homes and to create 1.5 million jobs through the housing value chain. The Federal Government has therefore approached the African Development Bank to seek funding of up to USD 100million to support middle- and low-income families acquire their own homes through “help to buy” mortgage products.
