E-mails: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] ABSTRACT Wildlife and plants are major part of nature which goes to a large extent in providing means of livelihood for varying categories of people in the world. Human beings are however engaged in over exploitation of this segment of the ecosystem, so much that many species are becoming endangered. It is against this background that this study evaluates the conservation strategies of wildlife resources in Nigerian national parks with particular reference to the old Oyo National Park. Data used for the study were primary data obtained through random sampling of 60 respondents in Ikoyi-Ile, an adjoining settlement, richer in the fauna population of the park. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistic and chi square statistics. The result shows considerable degree of effectiveness of the strategies employed by the authority of the park, as majority of the respondents are aware of the status of the park as a protected area. The paper therefore concludes by emphasizing the need to brace up in the various conservation programmes of the park. -

The association of official analytical chemists (AOAC, 1990) methods were used. Values obtained for the physicochemical and proximate analysis of whole seeds and pulps were; seed length( 4.5cm and 6.0cm), thickness (4.0cm and 6.0cm),shape (oblong),free fatty acid content (3.52% and 3.28%), miv (1.72% and 1.70%),melting point (32oC and 30oC),moisture (25.62% and 26.09%), dry matter, ash (3.14% and 3.31), crude fat (30.06% and 30.56%), crude fibre (0.76% and 0.78%), carbohydrate (20.03% and 20.05% ), protein (19.28% and 19.31%). The results suggest that the whole seeds and pulp of African elemi (Canarium schweinfurthii ), can serve as a good source of essential nutrients for humans and livestock. Abstract approved: Redacted for Privacy David While much research has examined the intricate interactions associated with the harvesting of wild animals for human consumption, little work has been undertaken in attempting to understand the greater socio-cultural significance of such use. In addition, to properly understand such systems of interaction, an intimate knowledge is required with regard to the rationale or motivation of resource users. In present day Mali, West Africa, the population perceives and upholds wildlife as a resource not only of valuable animal protein, in a region of famine and drought, but a means of generating income. The animal parts trade is but one mechanism within the larger socio-cultural structure that exploits wildlife through a complex human-environmental system to the benefit of those who participate. Moreover, this informal, yet highly structured system serves both cultural and outsider demand through its goods and services. By using traditional ethnographic investigation techniques (participant observation and semi-structured interviews) in combination with thick narration and multidisciplinary analysis (socio- cultural and biological-environmental), it is possible to construct a better understanding of the functions, processes, and motivation of those who participate. In a world where there is butonlya limited supply of natural and wild resources, understanding human- environmental systems is of critical value. ©Copyright by Ian B. -

Dowsett Received 16 December 2014 Summary.—This paper reviews the distribution of birds in Nigeria that were not treated in detail in the most recent national avifauna (Elgood et al. 1994). It clarifies certain range limits, and recommends the addition to the Nigerian list of four species (African Piculet Verreauxia africana, White-tailed Lark Mirafra albicauda, Western Black-headed Batis Batis erlangeri and Velvet-mantled Drongo Dicrurus modestus) and the deletion (in the absence of satisfactory documentation) of six others (Olive Ibis Bostrychia olivacea, Lesser Short-toed Lark Calandrella rufescens, Richard’s Pipit Anthus richardi, Little Grey Flycatcher Muscicapa epulata, Ussher’s Flycatcher M. ussheri and Rufous-winged Illadopsis Illadopsis rufescens). Recent research in West Africa has demonstrated the need to clarify the distributions of several bird species in Nigeria. I have re-examined much of the literature relating to the country, analysed the (largely unpublished) collection made by Boyd Alexander there in 1904–05 (in the Natural History Museum, Tring; NHMUK), and have reviewed the data available in the light of our own field work in Ghana (Dowsett-Lemaire & Dowsett 2014), Togo (Dowsett-Lemaire & Dowsett 2011a) and neighbouring Benin (Dowsett & Dowsett- Lemaire 2011, Dowsett-Lemaire & Dowsett 2009, 2010, 2011b). The northern or southern localities of species with limited ranges in Nigeria were not always detailed by Elgood et al. (1994), although such information is essential for understanding distribution patterns and future changes. For many Guineo-Congolian forest species their northern limit in West Africa lies on the escarpment of the Jos Plateau, especially Nindam Forest Reserve, Kagoro. -

Journal of Tourism and Management Research 101 ISSN:2149-6528 Journal of Tourism and Management Research ISSN: 2149-6528 2016 Vol. 1, Issue.1 SUSTAINABLE WILDLIFE CONSERVATION AT OKOMU NATIONAL PARK, NIGERIA Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the various sustainable preservation measures at Okomu National Park, Benin, Nigeria, identify the various challenges of the Park and suggest the way forward. Ethnography was adopted where research methods like key-informant interview, focus-group discussion, field observation, and electronic documentation were used to elicit data from the field. Relevant documentary sources were not left out either. Data gathered were analysed using descriptive and narrative analytical methods. This revealed a range of management measures that were grouped into two main categories (i.e. Educational measures and Technical measures). Major challenges like poaching and community violence were identified, with the major causes arising from host communities. At the end the study made a useful contribution to the sustainable management of parks for ecotourism development, by introducing the HoPSuP Model as a management practice to encourage a healthy host-park relationship in Nigeria and some other developing nations. Hippotragus Equinus – Roan Antelope
Hippotragus equinus – Roan Antelope authorities as there may be no significant genetic differences between the two. Many of the Roan Antelope in South Africa are H. e. cottoni or equinus x cottoni (especially on private properties). Assessment Rationale This charismatic antelope exists at low density within the assessment region, occurring in savannah woodlands and grasslands. Currently (2013–2014), there are an observed 333 individuals (210–233 mature) existing on nine formally protected areas within the natural distribution range. Adding privately protected subpopulations and an Cliff & Suretha Dorse estimated 0.8–5% of individuals on wildlife ranches that may be considered wild and free-roaming, yields a total mature population of 218–294 individuals. Most private Regional Red List status (2016) Endangered subpopulations are intensively bred and/or kept in camps C2a(i)+D*†‡ to exclude predators and to facilitate healthcare. Field National Red List status (2004) Vulnerable D1 surveys are required to identify potentially eligible subpopulations that can be included in this assessment. Reasons for change Non-genuine: While there was an historical crash in Kruger National Park New information (KNP) of 90% between 1986 and 1993, the subpopulation Global Red List status (2008) Least Concern has since stabilised at c. 50 individuals. Connochaetes gnou – Black Wildebeest Blue Wildebeest (C. taurinus) (Grobler et al. 2005 and ongoing work at the University of the Free State and the National Zoological Gardens), which is most likely due to the historic bottlenecks experienced by C. gnou in the late 1800s. The evolution of a distinct southern endemic Black Wildebeest in the Pleistocene was associated with, and possibly driven by, a shift towards a more specialised kind of territorial breeding behaviour, which can only function in open habitat. Thus, the evolution of the Black Wildebeest was directly associated with the emergence of Highveld-type open grasslands in the central interior of South Africa (Ackermann et al. 2010). The English Language and Tourism in Nigeria *
Joumal of the School Of General and BaSic Studies THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND TOURISM IN NIGERIA * Ngozi Anyachonkeya ABSTRACT Thispaper examines the role of English as a dynamic language in tapping and documenting the potentials and bounties of tourism in Nigeria. It argues that the English language is a potent instrument in harnessing tourism bounties of a people especially among the fifty-four member nations of the Commonwealth. In Nigeria the English language remains the most strategic language for the exploitation and marketing of tourism bounties available in the country. This is so because English is Nigeria's official language and language of unity in a multiethnic country like ours. In doing this, the paper makes a disclaimer. It is thefact that the author of thispaper is not an authority on Tourism. The burden of this paper therefore is to lay bare the indispensable role of English - a global dynamic language and language of globalization - in the i •• exploitation of tourism wealth of Nigeria, and in selling these bounties to world civilization for document. In the final analysis the paper makes the following declarations. We could practically do nothing without language. It is rather impossible that we could successfully discuss Tourism as an academic discipline in Nigeria in isolation of language, vis-a-vis, English, the arrowhead and 'DNA' of culture. In the same vein, it is rather a tragic mission to explore the bounties of Tourism in Nigeria and make same available to the global village outside the English language medium, in view of Nigeria's status as among the fifty-four member nations of the Commonwealth. -

Data for the study were collected using two sets of structured questionnaires and secondary data obtained from administrative records. A set of structured questionnaires was administered randomly to 30% of households in ten selected communities close to the park. The second set of questionnaires was administered to 30% of the staff in park protection section of KLNP. In all 403 households and 53 staff members were sampled. Data on poaching arrest were obtained from administrative records. Data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics in form of frequencies of count, percentages, graphs, bar chart and pie chart. Grazing of livestock and hunting were the form of encroachment most arrested in the park between 2001 and 2009. -

Security Threat Assessment for South West Executive Summary Political Context The merger between the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) and other smaller parties, has provided an opportunity for opposition parties to align and challenge the dominance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This however will also provide the backdrop for a keenly contested election in 2015. The zoning arrangement for the presidency is also a key issue that will define the face of the 2015 elections and possible security consequences. Across the six geopolitical zones, other factors will define the elections. These include the persisting state of insecurity from the insurgency and activities of militants and vigilante groups, the high stakes of election as a result of the availability of derivation revenues, the ethnic heterogeneity that makes elite consensus more difficult to attain, as well as the difficult environmental terrain that makes policing of elections a herculean task. Preparations for the Elections The political temperature across the country is heating up in preparation for the 2015 elections. While some state governors are up for re-election, most others are serving out their second terms. The implication is that most of the states are open for grab by either of the major parties and will therefore make the electoral contest fiercer in 2015 both within the political parties and in the general election. -
