Relative to the time and place in which they work, teachers within the Perennial Tradition adapt earlier and contemporary teachings to meet the needs of their students. "I have meditated on the different religions, endeavoring to understand them, and I have found that they stem from a single principle with numerous ramifications. Do not therefore ask a man to adopt a particular religion (rather than another), for this would separate him from the fundamental principle; it is this principle itself which must come to seek him; in it are all the heights and all the meanings elucidated; then he will understand them." Al-Hallaj, a Sufi Perennialist teacher "Hence there is a single religion and a single creed for all beings endowed with understanding, and this religion is presupposed behind all the diversity of rites." Nicolas of Cusa The conception that the Perennial Tradition is the single stream of initiatory teaching flowing through all the original, authentic expressions of the great religions and philosophies does not point to an indiscriminate syncretism or a vacuous eclecticism. It is important for seekers to realize what a unique approach to teaching the Perennial Tradition embodies. Non- Perennialist books on philosophy, religion, mysticism, or the occult are the results of teachers of a specific era borrowing from the ideas and practices of former thinkers and creating a syncretism of doctrines and procedures which they then http://www.hermes-press.com/Perennial_Tradition/PTintroduction.htm (2 of 15)02/10/2008 14:56:06 The Perennial Tradition--Introduction represent as their own new system. Perennialist teaching material and teaching methods are, on the contrary, the outcome of creative adaptation to contemporary needs of the identical stream of Perennialist truth by the initiated teacher. Certain material within the tradition becomes superseded and a Perennialist teacher does not repeat it just because it had been used at an earlier time. Each Perennialist teacher will arrive at a different embodiment of the fundamental truths, not because she is borrowing from her predecessors and building her own philosophical system on the basis of their ideas, but because the needs of her students, relative to her own time and place in history, require new compilations and techniques. The Perennialist teacher makes genuine contact with the essence of the Perennial Tradition and the originating impulse indicates what and how instructional material is to be used. In many instances, the immediate disciples of Perennialist teachers do not understand their masters' esoteric teachings, http://www.hermes-press.com/Perennial_Tradition/PTintroduction.htm (3 of 15)02/10/2008 14:56:06 The Perennial Tradition--Introduction misinterpreting and distorting the genuine precepts, creating a fixed system of senseless dogma. As we'll see in chapter thirteen, this is precisely what occured with Jesus' teachings: his immediate disciples distorted his ideas into a neo-Jewish travesty of what Jesus had taught. It took Paul, a disciple of Jesus by virtue of his mystical experience, to understand the true nature of what Jesus had taught. When disciples of a Perennialist master are able to follow in the same line as the original teacher, it is because they have tapped into the Perennialist initiatory current in an authentic way. "Only by a rare stroke of fortune has one or another of these pioneers of thought found a single disciple who could grasp his meaning well enough to perform the task of handing it on. Even so, there arises a curious dilemma, which can hardly be escaped. Unless this disciple is himself a man of genius, he is not likely to rise to the height of his argument. If he is a man of genius, he will not stop short at a mere reproduction of what he has understood from his master. He will carry the thought farther, following out its implications in fields beyond its original scope; and in so doing he may transform the truth into a shape the master would hardly recognise. "Something of this sort happened in the case of Socrates and Plato. It was the unique good fortune of Socrates to have, among his young companions, one who was not only to become a writer of incomparable skill, but was, by native gift, a poet and a thinker no less subtle than Socrates himself. Plato was about twenty-eight when Socrates died, and he went on writing till his own death at the age of eighty. A philosopher of his calibre could not limit himself to reproducing the thought of any master, however great. True, the central germ of Platonism, from first to last, is the new Socratic morality of spiritual aspiration; but under Plato's hands this germ has grown into a tree whose branches cover the heavens." An attentive reader, with appropriate goals, preparation, and motivation, can use this book to develop a heightened capacity for discernment. In this book we will concentrate on the Perennial Tradition in Western Civilization, including the 2 Near-Eastern Perennialist teachers, but excluding Asian or Oriental sages such as Zoroaster, Buddha, Lao Tzu, Confucius, Shankara, Patanjali, and others. The extant works of the Asian masters contain innumerable direct references to Perennialist themes. Focusing on Western themes, we will review material from a variety of expressions of the Perennial Tradition: Sufism, 3 Hermeticism, Neo-Platonism, Illuminism , Cabala, Alchemy, Magic, Mysticism, and Gnosticism. "It is necessary, my dear brothers in the Lord, to give you a clear idea of the interior Church; of that illuminated Community of God which is scattered throughout the world, but which is governed by one truth and united in one spirit. This enlightened community has existed since the first day of the world's creation, and its duration will be to the last day of time. This community possesses a school, in which all who thirst for knowledge are instructed by the Spirit of Wisdom itself; and all the mysteries of God and of nature are preserved in this school for the children of light. "Perfect knowledge of God, of nature, and of humanity are the objects of instruction in this school. It is from her that all truths penetrate into the world, she is the School of the Prophets, and of all who search for wisdom, and it is in this community alone that truth and the explanation of all mystery is to be found. It is the most hidden of communities yet possesses members from many circles; of such is this school. From all time there has been an exterior school based on the interior one, of which it is but the outer expression. Karl von Eckhartshausen, The Cloud Upon the Sanctuary, 1795 In Chapter One we will examine the defining characteristics of the Perennial Tradition and trace the Perennialist line of transmission, from the ancient Semitic and Persian savants to modern-day teachers within the Perennial Tradition. With sound preparation, a seeker can discern whether particular teachers--living or dead--reside within the Perennial Tradition, not by looking for secret hand- shakes, outlandish garb, mysterious rituals, or esoteric symbols, but by discovering distinctive characteristics in the teachers' words and actions. We'll examine the defining themes of the Perennial Tradition in Chapter Two, those concepts and activities which constitute crucial criteria for determining whether a person worked within the Perennial Tradition or was merely touched or influenced by this spiritual legacy.     Wisdom Literature What is Wisdom Literature? “Wisdom literature” is the generic label for the books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes (=Qoheleth) and Job in the Hebrew Bible. Two other major wisdom books, the Book of Ben Sira (=Ecclesiasticus) and the Wisdom of Solomon, are found in the Apocrypha, but are accepted as canonical in the Catholic tradition. Some psalms (e.g. 1, 19, 119) are regarded as “wisdom psalms” by analogy with the main wisdom books, and other similar writings are found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. The label derives simply from the fact that “wisdom” and “folly” are discussed frequently in these books. The designation is an old one, going back at least to St. Augustine. Wisdom is instructional literature, in which direct address is the norm. It may consist of single sentences, proverbial or hortatory, strung together, or of longer poems and discourses, some of which tend toward the philosophical. From early times, wisdom was associated with King Solomon. According to 1 Kings 4:29-34, God gave Solomon very great wisdom, discernment, and breadth of understanding as vast as the sand on the sea-shore, so that Solomon’s wisdom surpassed the wisdom of all the people of the east, and all the wisdom of Egypt . .He composed three thousand proverbs, and his songs numbered a thousand and five. He would speak of trees, from the cedar that is in the Lebanon to the hyssop that grows in the wall; he would speak of trees, from the cedar that is in the Lebanon to the hyssop that grows in the wall; he would speak of animals, and birds, and reptiles, and fish.

    ABSTRACT (Re)growing the Tree: Early Christian Mysticism, Angelomorphic Identity, and the Shepherd of Hermas By Franklin Trammell This study analyzes the Shepherd of Hermas with a focus on those elements within the text that relate to the transformation of the righteous into the androgynous embodied divine glory. In so doing, Hermas is placed within the larger context of early Jewish and Christian mysticism and its specific traditions are traced back to the Jerusalem tradition evinced in the sayings source Q. Hermas is therefore shown to preserve a very old form of Christianity and an early form of Christian mysticism. It is argued that since Hermas’ revelatory visions of the Angel of the Lord and the divine House represent the object into which his community is being transformed, already in the present, and he provides a democratized praxis which facilitates their transformation and angelomorphic identity, he is operating within the realm of early Christian mysticism. Hermas’ implicit identification of the Ecclesia with Wisdom, along with his imaging of the righteous in terms of a vine and a Tree who are in exile and whose task it is to grow the Tree, is shown to have its earlier precedent in the Q source wherein Jesus and his followers take on an angelomorphic identity with the female Wisdom of the Temple and facilitate her restoration. Hermas’ tradition of the glory as a union of the Son of God and Wisdom is also shown to have its most direct contact with the Q source, in which Wisdom and the Son are understood to be eschatologically united in the transformation of the people of God.

En este sentido quisiéramos, también, interrelacionar los vasos comunicantes que se producen entre la película y los videojuegos, el paralelismo que pueda producirse entre el filme de Cronenberg y el sistema interactivo del juego virtual.     CHAPTER ONE Platonic Mysticism n the introduction, we began with the etymology of the word I“mysticism,” which derives from mystes (μύστης), an initiate into the ancient Mysteries. Literally, it refers to “one who remains silent,” or to “that which is concealed,” referring one’s direct inner experi- ence of transcendence that cannot be fully expressed discursively, only alluded to. Of course, it is not clear what the Mysteries revealed; the Mystery revelations, as Walter Burkert suggested, may have been to a significant degree cosmological and magical.1 But it is clear that there is a related Platonic tradition that, while it begins with Plato’s dialogues, is most clearly expressed in Plotinus and is conveyed in condensed form into Christianity by Dionysius the Areopagite. Here, we will introduce the Platonic nature of mysticism. That we focus on this current of mysticism originating with Plato and Platonism and feeding into Christianity should not be understood as suggesting that there is no mysticism in other tradi- tions. Rather, by focusing on Christian mysticism, we will see much more clearly what is meant by the term “mysticism,” and because we are concentrating on a particular tradition, we will be able to recog- nize whether and to what extent similar currents are to be found in other religious traditions. At the same time, to understand Christian mysticism, we must begin with Platonism, because the Platonic tra- dition provides the metaphysical context for understanding its latest expression in Christian mysticism. Recognizing Thoreau’s use of Chinese philosophical ideas is important not only in understanding various passages but also in developing an appreciation for Thoreau’s overall project at Walden Pond. This paper calls attention to the ways Thoreau applied passages and allusions from Mengzi 孟子 (Mencius) to advance his argument on moral development in Walden, demonstrating how he throws Oriental light on the darkness in the West. Arthur Versluis dubbed Thoreau’s curiosity about Asia as “sauntering eastwards” (79). Thoreau in turn wrote boldly of his own love for Asian thought, calling it a “saucy Orientalism” (Hodder 174). He spoke of the Oriental light (le oriente lux) shining on Western darkness in his 1862 essay “Walking” (2:10). In his Journal in 1842, he wondered: ‘‘was not Asia mapped in my brain before it was in any geography?”(1: 387). Recognizing Thoreau’s use of Asian ideas in Walden is important for us not only in understanding of various passages in the text, but also in developing an appreciation for Thoreau’s overall project at Walden Pond.

The peculiar profile of the Transcendentalist individual avoids western dimensions that have been perceived in China as overindividualistic. Therefore, the inquiry over Transcendentalism opens up the intellectual debates on how traditional Confucian and Daoist teachings may be used also in China to bring about a renewed conception of the self and the individual’s life in social relationships that would be closer to a modern understanding of individualism. The Chinese problematization of the value of the individual in Chinese traditional culture sheds light on the non-western debates regarding cultural renewal.     The Perennial Philosophy and the Recovery of a Theophanic View of Nature Jeremy Naydler The Forgotten Tradition We suffer from a peculiar kind of cultural amnesia today. Since the time of the Reformation and the Scientific Revolution, we have increasingly lost awareness of the rich wisdom tradition that for hundreds of years nourished the inner life of contemplatives and seekers of truth. This wisdom tradition is often referred to as the philosophia perennis or ‘perennial philosophy’. In both the West and East it is articulated in manifold works of spiritual philosophy, visionary poetry and mystical literature, harboured within pagan, Judaeo-Christian, Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist and Taoist worldviews, and in the oral traditions of many indigenous peoples. While it is expressed in distinctive and different ways, the perennial philosophy articulates truths that are essentially universal and timeless, which help us to understand our place in the cosmos and the deeper purpose of human life. Central to the perennial philosophy is the recognition that there is a spiritual dimension of existence that is the primary reality from which all of creation derives. All creatures seek to express in their own way this reality, and all of creation seeks ultimately to unite with it. The perennial philosophy reminds us that our fundamental orientation as human beings should be towards spirit, that we should revere the natural world as the manifestation of the divine, and that we should affirm the possibility of an ever more conscious union between ourselves and the spiritual source of existence. It is important to understand that the perennial philosophy is not a ‘philosophical system’ produced by abstract reasoning.

(2019) 32:515–520 DOI 10.1007/s12129-019-09835-z DISTINCTIONS Multiculturalism and Transcendentalism Arthur Versluis Published online: 8 November 2019 # Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2019 American Transcendentalism, a signature American movement of the nineteenth century, might superficially seem to be an early form of late-twentieth and twenty-first-century multiculturalism. As I demonstrated in American Transcendentalism and Asian Religions (1993), the main figures in the movement, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, were among the first to draw on a newly global perspective on world religions. Emerson’s and Thoreau’s works are peppered with references to Hinduism, as well as Islam, Christianity, and Christian and Islamic mysticism. One could argue that the Transcendentalists were the first multiculturalists. But in the contemporary university curriculum, the Transcendentalists are, like Platonists, seldom found. That’s because the Transcendentalists were not today’s multiculturalists. They were introducing instead a multitude of complex and salient religious philosophies they believed could be adapted to American life. In this sense, Emerson, Thoreau, and the others in their circle, as well as of those in what I term the “second cycle of Transcendentalism,” were the true multiculturalists, insisting that the sublime insights of the world’s great religions were available to all, that no man was locked inside a philosophical prison by a set of predetermined traits.
