    Orlov Dark Mirrors RELIGIOUS STUDIES Azazel and Satanael in Early Jewish Demonology Dark Mirrors is a wide-ranging study of two central figures in early Jewish demonology—the fallen angels Azazel and Satanael. Andrei A. Orlov explores the mediating role of these paradigmatic celestial rebels in the development of Jewish demonological traditions from Second Temple apocalypticism to later Jewish mysticism, such as that of the Hekhalot and Shi ur Qomah materials. Throughout, Orlov makes use of Jewish pseudepigraphical materials in Slavonic that are not widely known. Dark Mirrors Orlov traces the origins of Azazel and Satanael to different and competing mythologies of evil, one to the Fall in the Garden of Eden, the other to the revolt of angels in the antediluvian period. Although Azazel and Satanael are initially representatives of rival etiologies of corruption, in later Jewish and Christian demonological lore each is able to enter the other’s stories in new conceptual capacities. Dark Mirrors also examines the symmetrical patterns of early Jewish demonology that are often manifested in these fallen angels’ imitation of the attributes of various heavenly beings, including principal angels and even God himself. My goal is to find common ground for Muslims and Christians ·through a sympathetic reading of the Qur'an. It is not my aim here to investigate the historical connections between \the texts, although such connections are not hard to fmd. Thus I do not examine the striking similarities between the Qur 'anic account of the fall and those recorded in the Christian pseudepigrapha, specifically the Latin Life ojAdam and Eve, The Gospel oj Bartholomew, and the Syriac text The Cave ojTreasures. While a comparison with these texts would cast much light on the historical origins ofthe Qur 'anic account, it would not serve the purpose of preparing grounds for dialog between Christians and Muslims.     ON THE POLEMICAL NATURE OF 2 (SLAVONIC) ENOCH : A REPLY TO C. BÖTTRICH by ANDREI A. ORLOV Marquette University, USA Summary Adam’s story occupies a prominent place in 2 Slavonic (Apocalypse of ) Enoch . The traditions pertaining to the rst human can be found in all the sec- tions of the book. In these materials Adam is depicted as a glorious angelic being, predestined by God to be the ruler of the earth, but falling short of God’s expectations. The article argues that the extensive presence of Adamic materials in 2 Enoch has a polemical nature since it is related to the long-lasting competition between Adamic and Enochic traditions. The analysis shows that the polemics taking place in 2 Enoch involve a rewriting of “original” Adamic motifs and themes when the details of Adam’s “story” are transferred to a new “hero,” the seventh antediluvian patriarch. The features of Adam’s story, his roles and o Yces, are used in 2 Enoch as the building blocks for creating the new, celestial identity of the elevated Enoch. In the course of these polemical appropriations, the elevated angelic status of the prelapsarian Adam, his luminosity, his wis- dom, and his special roles as the king of the earth and the steward of all earthly creatures are transferred to the new occupant of the celestial realm, the patriarch Enoch, who, near the Lord’s throne, is transformed into one of the glorious ones initiated into the highest mysteries by the Lord, becomes the “manager of the arrangements on the earth,” and writes down “everything that nourished” on it.

    UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Fictional Black Blues Figure: Blues Music and the Art of Narrative Self-Invention A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in English by Kimberly Renee Mack 2015 © Copyright by Kimberly Renee Mack 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Fictional Black Blues Figure: Blues Music and the Art of Narrative Self-Invention by Kimberly Renee Mack Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Los Angeles, 2015 Professor Richard A Yarborough, Chair My dissertation examines representations of black American blues musicians in contemporary American fiction, drama, and popular music, and it argues that blues music can be examined as a narrative art rooted in the tradition of fictionalized autobiographical self- fashioning. I contend that the contemporary, multi-racial, literary and musical characters in my project who participate in so-called “authentic” blues expression create, sometimes consciously and sometimes unwittingly, a fiction on top of a fiction. This project questions the belief held by many blues scholars, critics, and fans that blues music is a racially essentialized form instead of a narrative tradition made possible through carefully constructed autobiographical and biographical fictions. ii My project makes two important interventions into traditional discussions of blues production and the representations of blues figures in 20th- and 21st-century American literature. First, it destabilizes racial, socio-cultural, temporal, and gendered blues tropes by shifting blues expression from an innate skill to a storytelling art form through which its makers invent themselves. Second, this study allows for a different, interdisciplinary approach to autobiographical and biographical expression.

The "seedline doctrine," which is taught by Pastor Dan Gayman, a former high school principal, and other preachers of the Christian Identity movement, argues that the Jews are the literal children of Satan. Since this doctrine is not well understood by scholars of religion, this paper traces the development of the doctrine in Christian Identity thought and ponders its rhetorical implications through the lens of narrative criticism. To sharpen the focus, the paper analyzes Gayman's "The Two Seeds of Genesis 3:15," a book which is worthy of study because it has been widely distributed among Christian Identity believers. Two research questions guide the paper's analysis:(1) How does Gayman's use of storytelling develop mystical anti-Semitism for creating an ideology of division and vilification?; and (2) Does Gayman's narrative provide motives for violence? The paper begins with a brief historical overview of the Christian Identity movement and then discusses the critical method selected for analyzing Gayman's book.The narrative is examined by focusing on three critical issues: setting, character, and audience.
