Have you ever liked a film you knew wasn't all that great, Night and Day one you simply enjoyed watching? That's the way I Night and Day about "Night and Day," a musical bio with a large dose of fantasy mixed in on that great American songwriter Cole Porter. Perhaps it's the pleasure of watching Cary Grant having a ball playing the composer, and even singing Night and Day few tunes to boot. Or maybe it's the youthful Alexis Smith as a perfect "Mrs. Porter," coping with challenges as a famous songwriter's spouse. Certainly Monty Woolley is amusing as himself, playing a role he reportedly lived with the real-life composer. Then there's that honey-coated contralto Ginny Simms looking gorgeous in Technicolor and beautifully singing some of Porter's most expressive music and lyrics. In the supporting cast is a sprighty Jane Wyman before she became laden with heavy dramatic roles doing several comic-singing turns, and even a surprise bit from Eve Arden as a French cabaret star, "Gabrielle," performing an early, lesser-known show number. The screen has only one bio of this outstanding American songwriter, one who is respected by both popular and "serious" composer-peers, as well as by the critics and general public alike. They Night and Day look like they're having a great time, and I for one have fun with them. Until a better Porter bio comes along, this one will have to do. Looking for something to watch? Journal of Criminal Justice and Law Review : Vol. 1 • No. 1 • June 2009 IDENTIFYING LARGE REPLICABLE FILM POPULATIONS IN SOCIAL SCIENCE FILM RESEARCH: A UNIFIED FILM POPULATION IDENTIFICATION METHODOLOGY FRANKLIN T. WILSON Indiana State University ABSTRACT: Historically, a dominant proportion of academic studies of social science issues in theatrically released films have focused on issues surrounding crime and the criminal justice system. Additionally, a dominant proportion has utilized non-probability sampling methods in identifying the films to be analyzed. Arguably one of the primary reasons film studies of social science issues have used non-probability samples may be that no one has established definitive operational definitions of populations of films, let alone develop datasets from which researchers can draw. In this article a new methodology for establishing film populations for both qualitative and quantitative research–the Unified Film Population Identification Methodology–is both described and demonstrated. This methodology was created and is presented here in hopes of expand the types of film studies utilized in the examination of social science issues to those communication theories that require the examination of large blocks of media. Further, it is anticipated that this methodology will help unify film studies of social science issues in the future and, as a result, increase the reliability, validity, and replicability of the said studies. Keywords: UFPIM, Film, Core Cop, Methodology, probability. Mass media research conducted in the academic realm has generally been theoretical in nature, utilizing public data, with research agendas emanating from the academic researchers themselves. Academic studies cover a gambit of areas including, but not limited to, antisocial and prosocial effects of specific media content, uses and gratifications, agenda setting by the media, and the cultivation of perceptions of social reality (Wimmer & Dominick, 2003).

  • Alexander Mackendrick: Filmmaker, Teacher & Theorist a Centennial Celebration
FILM AT REDCAT PRESENTS Wed Feb 6 | 8:30 pm | Jack H. Skirball Series $10 [students $8, CalArts $5] Alexander Mackendrick: Filmmaker, Teacher & Theorist A Centennial Celebration The esteemed director of Sweet Smell of Success (1957) and The Ladykillers (1955), Alexander Mackendrick (1912–1993) was a pivotal figure in the history of CalArts, and his work and writings remain a major influence on contemporary narrative directors and screenwriters. For this celebration of the artist’s multifaceted contributions, Paul Cronin (editor of Mackendrick’s seminal book On Film-Making) is joined by two CalArts alums, director James Mangold and author and filmmaker F.X. Feeney. Together they honor the man who, as Dean of the School of Film/Video at CalArts and throughout his nearly 25 years of teaching, shaped an institution and inspired generations of filmmakers. This lively discussion reveals Mackendrick through personal reminiscences, film clips and critical observations on his work as a filmmaker, teacher and theorist. In person: Paul Cronin, F.X. Feeney and James Mangold “ ‘Process, not product’ was [Mackendrick’s] mantra to his students. The creative process—not the creative method, or the creative system. The process. Which never stops.” —Martin Scorsese One of the most distinguished directors ever to emerge from the British film industry, Alexander “Sandy” Mackendrick was born in the US to Scottish parents. Raised in Scotland, Mackendrick studied at the Glasgow School of Art. Afterward, he worked as a commercial illustrator, soon gravitating to making films, the first being animated advertisements followed by numerous live action short documentaries. Mackendrick’s feature debut was the Ealing Studios comedy classic Whisky Galore (1949).
