Thalhotter/123RF “Poop is central to the story of how dogs came into our lives," write Duke University dog researchers Brian Hare and Vanessa Woods in their wonderful new book, Survival of the Friendliest: Understanding Our Origins and Rediscovering Our Common Humanity. I think they may be right. Molly, our beloved Labrador retriever, certainly loved to eat poop. Sometimes she would chow down on her own feces, and at other times, she preferred excrement of the cows that lived behind our house. Mary Jean and I found this practice (coprophagia) disgusting. We were not alone. Ben Hart and his colleagues at the University of California at Davis School of Veterinary Medicine surveyed nearly 3,000 dog owners about their pet’s penchant for poop. -

Given the newness of such programs on an official level, however, there are an increasing number of enrichment decisions based on as- sumption. Enrichment is typically not provided on exhibit, especially for exhib- its considered to be more naturalistic, because it is assumed to affect visitors’ experience negatively. To test that assumption, visitors were interviewed in front of four exhibits—an outdoor barren grotto, an outdoor vegetated grotto, an in- door immersion exhibit, and an outdoor traditional cage—each with either natu- ral, nonnatural or no enrichment objects present. Specifically, we wanted to know whether 1) the exhibit’s perceived educational message, 2) the animal’s per- ceived “happiness,” and 3) the visitor perceptions of enrichment, the naturalism of animal’s behavior, and zoo animal well-being changed as a function of object type. Overall, the type of enrichment object had little impact on visi- tor perceptions. In the outdoor barren grotto, only visitor perceptions of ex- hibit naturalism were affected by object type. In the outdoor vegetated grotto, object type influenced visitors perceptions of enrichment and exhibit natu- ralism. For the indoor immersion exhibit, general perceptions of enrichment and the perceived naturalism of the animal’s behavior were affected. -

This article is an open access publication Abstract In this paper, we defend a representational approach to at least some kinds of non-human psychopathology. Mentally-ill non-human minds, in particular in delusions, obsessive-compulsive disorders and similar cognitive states, are traditionally under- stood in purely behavioral terms. In contrast, we argue that non-human mental psy- chopathology should be at least sometimes not only ascribed contentful mental repre- sentation but also understood as really having these states. To defend this view, we appeal to the interactivist account of mental representation, which is a kind of a constructive approach to meaning. We follow Mark Bickhard in assuming that only an organism – either human or non-human – capable of detecting its own misrepre- sentations is representational. However, under his autonomy-based account of biolog- ical function these minds are incapable of misrepresentations because these minds are, ex hypothesi, unable to detect error in such representations. To solve this problem, we argue that adding a historical dimension – as in Millikan’s view on mental represen- tations – to Bickhard’s account of function makes mental misrepresentation of mentally-ill minds possible. Using Bickhard’s dynamic account of function, it is possible to explain why delusions and other mental disorders can be seen as locally functional. However, an etiological dimension can further explain why misrepresenta- tions seem to be globally dysfunctional. -
Coprophagia” Is Defined As the Ingestion of Any Type of Faeces, and Is a Common Complaint of Dog Owners
Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue Golden Rule Training Canine Corprophagia "Coprophagia” is defined as the ingestion of any type of faeces, and is a common complaint of dog owners. For humans it can seem disgusting and embarrassing for our dogs to engage in this behavior. It is somewhat a natural act for dogs, but as we domesticate our pets, we expect these behaviors to disappear; however, they are still animals with natural instincts! A dog may eat its own faeces, those of another dog or the faeces of another species. Dogs commonly eat the faeces of cats with which they share a household (or farm animals). The only circumstance in which coprophagia is considered a normal behavior is when a mother dog eats the faeces of her pups from the time of their birth until about 3 weeks of age. It is felt that the mother does this to keep the area clean until the pups are able to move away from it to defecate. A clean area may be less likely to attract predators in the wild. What behaviors are linked with corprophagia? Coprophagia may be a behavioral or a medical problem. It may be a type of behavioral coping mechanism for an animal that is caught in a stressful situation, such as a sudden environmental change. It can also be a tactic to avoid punishment for having a bowel movement in an inappropriate area. Coprophagia can inadvertently be taught to a puppy or adult during housetraining; if the puppy or dog is scolded or he sees the owner 'cleaning up' the bowel movement in the house, the puppy may learn to 'hide' the bowel movement by eating it. -
