    2015–16 Dear Portlanders: Thank you for your recent commitment to repairing and improving Portland’s parks. In November 2014, you and an impressive 74 percent of Portlanders voted “Yes” for the Parks Replacement Bond Projects26 underway — the highest percentage ever for a Parks ballot measure. You became part of a long tradition of Portlanders who’ve built and maintained our city’s enviable collection of park facilities. In this fi rst full year of the Bond, from July 2015 to July 2016, we’ve laid the foundation for the work to be done. In this upcoming year, you’ll start to see tangible results in the parks. Replacement of the 70 to 90 year old mechanical systems at Grant Pool was the fi rst completed project, and next year, results will be visible across the city. Project1 completed About every nine years over the last century, Portlanders have invested in increasing, preserving and maintaining our park system by voting “yes” on parks bonds or levies. Before the 2014 bond, the last major bond was in 1994, meaning 20 years passed without signifi cant park improvements or address- ing dire repair needs. Portland Parks & Recreation anticipates a $248 million funding gap for major maintenance needs over the next 10 years. The $68 million in funds from the 2014 Parks Replacement Bond will not address all of these maintenance issues, but it is vital to fi xing, upgrading and replacing the most crucial of these needs. The Lake Sunapee Byway is one of seventeen designated routes in the New Hampshire Scenic and Cultural Byways Program, consisting of roadways that exemplify unique cultural, historical, recreational, scenic and natural features in the State. The goal of the Lake Sunapee Byway Corridor Management Plan is to recognize, preserve, and enhance the character of the Byway and its resources. The Lake Sunapee Byway Committee is tasked with preparing a vision for the byway and creating and implementing a Corridor Management Plan to achieve that vision. The vision for the Lake Sunapee Byway is as follows: The Lake Sunapee Byway welcomes travelers seeking alternatives to the beaten path, linking several villages, each with a unique connection to the history and culture of the Lake Sunapee region. The 39-mile route encircles Lake Sunapee, connecting visitors to vibrant communities and natural scenery. The lakes, mountains, and forests offer striking vistas and a multitude of recreational opportunities. In the village centers, history and modern-day culture converge, where old buildings are adapted for new uses and the traditions of yesteryear are still observed. The Lake Sunapee Byway reflects the best of New England tradition, recognizing and protecting the qualities that make this region unique.

Given the newness of such programs on an official level, however, there are an increasing number of enrichment decisions based on as- sumption. Enrichment is typically not provided on exhibit, especially for exhib- its considered to be more naturalistic, because it is assumed to affect visitors’ experience negatively. To test that assumption, visitors were interviewed in front of four exhibits—an outdoor barren grotto, an outdoor vegetated grotto, an in- door immersion exhibit, and an outdoor traditional cage—each with either natu- ral, nonnatural or no enrichment objects present. Specifically, we wanted to know whether 1) the exhibit’s perceived educational message, 2) the animal’s per- ceived “happiness,” and 3) the visitor perceptions of enrichment, the naturalism of animal’s behavior, and zoo animal well-being changed as a function of object type. Overall, the type of enrichment object had little impact on visi- tor perceptions. In the outdoor barren grotto, only visitor perceptions of ex- hibit naturalism were affected by object type. In the outdoor vegetated grotto, object type influenced visitors perceptions of enrichment and exhibit natu- ralism. For the indoor immersion exhibit, general perceptions of enrichment and the perceived naturalism of the animal’s behavior were affected.
