"LIBERATING OURSELVES": UTOPIAN COMMUNALISM IN THE NINETEENTH AND TWENTIETH CENTURY UNITED STATES A Dissertation by CHERYL L. Coulthard ABSTRACT This dissertation uses Charles Tilly's definition of social movements and considers examples from three nineteenth century communal societies, and three from the twentieth century to argue that Utopian communalism is a social movement, not a series of related phenomena. This movement is a fabric of Utopian threads representing the sharing of ideas, methods and members woven together laterally between communities contemporary to each other and longitudinally across time from the past to the present and into the future. The six Utopian communities include Nashoba, Harmony Society and Modern Times in the nineteenth century and the Diggers, Peoples Temple and Kerista in the late twentieth century. This dissertation examines the six communities in relation to their attempts to resolve social problems of race, gender, and economic inequality. These questions illuminate the continuities in goals, methods, and struggles to overcome socially conditioned attitudes about race, gender and class. The author used published and archival memoirs, letters, community publications, sermons, visitor's accounts, legal and business records and interviews to illustrate the arguments. This dissertation concludes that Utopian communities have struggled to achieve their Utopian goals of gender, race and economic equality often because they proved unable to let go of social institutions and attitudes that perpetuate these inequalities. Nonetheless the striving for Utopia is in itself worthwhile and offers lessons for society at large in how to create a better world. ii DEDICATION For Frances. Threads of Utopian ideology and historical consciousness stretch across this long trajectory. They provide precedents for ongoing critiques of society and plans to rectify our failures in living up to the Founding Fathers' ideals of liberty and equality for all Americans. There is a collage on the cover of the 1993 Spring/Summer issue of Communities: Journal of Cooperative Living that depicts the images of two dozen historical visionary leaders. The cover illustrates the influence that past communities and thinkers hold for modern Utopian communalists, and the ongoing relevance of their ideas. The 1980s Kerista Commune wrote of their debt to Robert Owen. "Robert Owen, a Utopian Socialist (1771-1858) said that the greatest inhibitors to the advancement of social justice were: private property, the family and Christianity…The fundamental precept of the Utopian Socialists was that capitalists would voluntarily surrender their wealth…[for] a quality of life unattainable outside the network of democratic communities in which all live at the same standard of living."1 Kerista

    TELLING THE TRUTH ABOUT CLASS G. M. TAMÁS ne of the central questions of social theory has been the relationship Obetween class and knowledge, and this has also been a crucial question in the history of socialism. Differences between people – acting and knowing subjects – may influence our view of the chances of valid cognition. If there are irreconcilable discrepancies between people’s positions, going perhaps as far as incommensurability, then unified and rational knowledge resulting from a reasoned dialogue among persons is patently impossible. The Humean notion of ‘passions’, the Nietzschean notions of ‘resentment’ and ‘genealogy’, allude to the possible influence of such an incommensurability upon our ability to discover truth. Class may be regarded as a problem either in epistemology or in the philosophy of history, but I think that this separation is unwarranted, since if we separate epistemology and the philosophy of history (which is parallel to other such separations characteristic of bourgeois society itself) we cannot possibly avoid the rigidly-posed conundrum known as relativism. In speak- ing about class (and truth, and class and truth) we are the heirs of two socialist intellectual traditions, profoundly at variance with one another, although often intertwined politically and emotionally. I hope to show that, up to a point, such fusion and confusion is inevitable. All versions of socialist endeavour can and should be classified into two principal kinds, one inaugurated by Rousseau, the other by Marx. The two have opposite visions of the social subject in need of liberation, and these visions have determined everything from rarefied epistemological posi- tions concerning language and consciousness to social and political attitudes concerning wealth, culture, equality, sexuality and much else.

Long Live the Revolutions: Fighting for France's Political Future in the Long Wake of the Commune, 1871-1880 Abstract The traumatic legacies of the Paris Commune and its harsh suppression in 1871 had a significant impact on the identities and voter outreach efforts of each of the chief political blocs of the 1870s. The political and cultural developments of this phenomenal decade, which is frequently mislabeled as calm and stable, established the Republic's longevity and set its character. Yet the Commune's legacies have never been comprehensively examined in a way that synthesizes their political and cultural effects. This dissertation offers a compelling perspective of the 1870s through qualitative and quantitative analyses of the influence of these legacies, using sources as diverse as parliamentary debates, visual media, and scribbled sedition on city walls, to explicate the decade's most important political and cultural moments, their origins, and their impact.

Arndt before George Rapp's Harmonists moved from Harmony in EvenButler County, Pennsylvania, through the great Pittsburgh gateway to establish their second settlement, New Harmony, on the Wabash, they had become internationally famous as highly successful American pioneer builders in the wilderness, but their well-arranged move down the Ohio to the Wabash increased their prestige as models of group migration. With a justified pride in their brilliant transpor- tation of an entire community of 800 people withcattle, sheep, horses, feathered flocks, swine, flora and fauna, building supplies, machinery of various kinds including a steam engine, seeds for future harvests, beer, wine, food supplies, tools, raiment, and medicines over such a distance, Frederick Rapp on March 28, 1816, wrote his Pittsburgh agent George Sutton: "Ican inform you with much pleasure, that we all arrived here in good State of health, and landed our property Safe, which we brought with us from there, so that nothing has happened to none of our Boats of which there was above thirty." Thousands of individuals had passed through Pittsburgh on their way west, but the Harmonist migration was the greatest group achievement of that time and has never been properly recognized in the history of Western Pennsylvania. The Harmonist move was the transportation of an entire civilization from the east to the primeval forests of the west, and for that reason in the west and in Europe the new settlement soon became known as "Harmonie, that Wonder of the West." Frederick Rapp and all the Harmonists were fully aware of what they were accomplishing and therefore took great pride in their unique community, so much so that they wrote enthusiastic letters to friends and relatives in old Wurttemberg inviting them to come and join them in the wide open spaces of the glorious west.

    _________________________________________________________________________ ACADEMIC | FALL 2016 Cancer Memoirs as Narrative Strategy: Are Our Stories as Valuable as Our Breasts? By Natshwa Khan Introduction Gender is widely accepted as socially constructed, however as a society with certain prevalent public attitudes, no individual lives in a vacuum. As a result, gendered identities intersect with how people experience illness. The very gendered connotations of breast cancer are immersed in dominant discourse of pinkwashing of the illness. The harmful nature of homogenizing experiences of breast cancer is exposed through examining the intersection of identity and illness. The way women experience breast cancer is shaped by the social and political environment which constructs the meaning of the illness for women beyond the biomedical diagnosis. This paper will explore female identity at the intersection of cancer. This is not to exclude gender nonconforming individuals or men, nor is it to paint the experience of breast cancer as identical for all women as experiences of race, class, education and ability also impact identity. However, women who experience breast cancer face a very particular form of subjugation that forces them to perform illness narratives in a specific way when diagnosed with breast cancer. Janet Lee (1997) highlighted this writing “...women do experience gender in an embodied way: they live in and through their bodies that are marked and framed through discourses and practices of society.” The hypersexuality of women’s breasts is foundational to understanding the universal toll breast cancer plays on women and their respective identities (Sheppard & Ely, 2008). This paper will firstly outline how breast cancer can be debilitating to a female identity, and how breast cancer and its gendered nature forces women to feel stripped of womanhood; and then will examine narrative and counter-storytelling as a reclamation strategy, and highlight the proliferation of varied breast cancer memoirs and their importance.

Surveying the area through a lens of geographic place and space, this research will look at the historical factors that led to the rise of a counterculture here. To contextualize this development, it is necessary to examine the development of a cosmopolitan neighborhood after World War II that was multicultural and bohemian into something culturally unique.
