Sep 04, Anne rated it really liked it Shelves: graphic-novelscomics Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: The Black Vortex, read-in As far as crossovers and events go, this particular volume went down pretty easily for me. I'm not always a huge fan of these things anymore, mainly because the collected volumes don't seem to have the complete story, and then you end up with this nagging feeling that you need to go search out random issues from other titles to fill in the blanks. Surprisingly, I didn't feel that way at all when I closed this book. Now, if you already happen to be a superpower? You get extra amped up! Is it a tool that can be used to save the universe, or is this something that's just simply too powerful to mess around with? According to one alien named Gara, it's the latter Ok, so the best part of this one to me is the sheer amount of issues collected here. Like I mentioned before, it doesn't feel like you need to search for missing stuff to understand what's happening in this story. It's all right here! What a genius idea! I'm a sucker for a good love story. Overall, I quite enjoyed reading this. I thought it was a pretty fun event, and would definitely recommend this particular volume to someone who likes cosmic Marvel! View all 11 comments. Dec 27, Sean Gibson rated it it was ok. Flaming bag of poo noun : An object often left on the doorstep of a cantankerous neighbor in an effort to induce the old bastard into stepping on it in an attempt to put out the fire, resulting in a shoe covered with feces; see also The Black Vortex. As a general rule, I try to find the good in everything and everyone well, except maybe for Donald Trump. But, enough is enough. Marvel—I love you. You know that, right? Enough with the contrived ways to make good characters do bad or out-of-character things. Enough with Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: The Black Vortex twisting of reality. Enough with the need to suck every character from every book into every wacky story. Enough with insisting that vegetables are good for you, for crying out in the night! I will note that there were at least a couple of meritorious points in the story, which notched it a 2-star review instead of a 1-star lambasting: reuniting Cyclops with his young X-Men counterparts was fun, much of the art was solid, and there was a Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: The Black Vortex of Kitty Pryde, and Kitty Pryde is a badass it is known. This thing ends right as Secret Wars begins? Well, that was time well spent reading, then. View all 94 comments. Dec 30, Chad Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: The Black Vortex it liked it. Decent all over art, not much story. Just a bunch of flying around the universe and punching stuff for the most part. Sep Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: The Black Vortex, Sesana rated it liked it Shelves: comicssuperhumans. This is a pretty big crossover. It covers half a dozen ongoing series, plus a few one-shots. And it plays out in a single, cohesive story. You really do need to read all the issues involved in the correct order to get the most out of this story. Or even anything at all. Much better to skip those issues in their individual trade and just read the full thing here. But do you really want to? As a story This is a pretty big crossover. As a story, it isn't bad, but it isn't great, either. You won't really be missing much if you skip it, except that there are some changes made to characters and the universe as a whole that, if they stick around after Secret Wars, are kind of big deals. I think the biggest failing of the story is that it actually felt kind of repetitive. The arguments about whether or not the heroes should use the power of the Black Vortex go around in circles. It's a bad idea, until it's not, and then it's a bad idea again. Or something. There is some really good art in here. The All New X-Men issues, in particular, are incredibly stunning. The one-shot issues are by far the weakest, both in writing and in art, Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: The Black Vortex even they aren't terrible. I know it isn't a ringing endorsement for the story, but you really could do worse. Oct 18, Paul E. The Black Vortex was created by the Celestial Godheadafter a Viscardi named Gara expressed to the cosmic being the Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: The Black Vortex of their species to explore beyond their potential. Gara was the first of the Viscardi to submit to the Black Vortex's power. One year later, a war between the Viscardi left Gara as the sole survivor of her species. Gamora and Beast used the Black Vortex to acquire cosmic powers, and Gamora later showed the X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy what they would look like with its powers. After unleashing his cosmic potential, Angel allied himself with Gamora and Beast to bring peace to the universe by using the Black Vortex. The Kree took the Vortex to Hala. The planet Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: The Black Vortex shortly after assaulted by the cosmically empowered heroes. The heroes proceeded to attack the Accuser Corps and Nova fled with the Vortex. Misa of the Slaughter Lords attempted to take the Vortex from Nova, but after Hala was destroyed by Knife's flying fortress, it was left floating in the void and remains of the planet. Nova reacquired the Vortex, and as the Guardians and the X-Men had been forced to flee from Hala while it was exploding, decided to take it to Earth to seek for help with the . Nova hid the Vortex in his apartment, until the Collector appeared before his door, with intentions of purchasing the Vortex. Nova went on the run again, and decided to take the Vortex to Spartaxwhere the Guardians and the X-Men had first met. However, Nova accidentally arrived to Mister Knife's fortress, and the Vortex was seized from him by Knife's and his ally Thanewho proceeded to empower himself with it. When Cyclops, Iceman and Groot escaped imprisonment in Knife's fortress, they came across the Vortex, empowered themselves to escape and took it with them. Cyclops handed over the Vortex to Captain Marvelwho was going to deliver it to Kitty Pryde for a plan they had. Gara interrupted the heroes when they were discussing how to proceed, and recovered the Vortex. The X-Man Magik convinced her to let one of them use the Vortex for a last time, and Kitty Pryde decided to be that person. After Kitty used her augmented phasing powers to save Spartax, Gara was given the Vortex. Before leaving with it to guard it, as it couldn't be destroyed, she allowed whoever wanted to use the Vortex to get rid of their cosmic powers. Finally, Gara rested at the center of a star, guarding the Black Vortex in her arms. The Black Vortex acts like a mirror which shows an individual what would they look like with their cosmic potential unleashed. After saying "I submit to the Black Vortex," the individual will be given the power promised. The Vortex is also capable of reverting the state of its users, taking their cosmic powers from them. However, mental or physical side-effects might remain. For example, Iceman gained the ability to turn his entire body into organic ice, and Groot Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: The Black Vortex a slight change of appearance. The enhancements provided by the Black Vortex diminish both over time and with exertion. Fandom may earn an affiliate commission on sales made from links on this page.
