Convent shrine & garden, lakes, meadows, hill and beauty spot In Brief This is a lovely picnic walk, best in the warmer months when the spring and summer flowers are on show. At the middle point, there is an exhilarating short climb to the top of Hydon's Ball. There are only two stiles on this walk, both dog friendly. There are one or two patches of nettles so shorts might be inadvisable. In wetter conditions, there are a few muddy sections, but mostly avoidable. The walk begins in Ashtead Lane on the outskirts of Godalming Surrey, postcode GU7 1SX . It can also be reached by train via Godalming station , with an extra short hop each way. The legislation on conservation areas was introduced in 1967 with the Civic Amenities Act and on 26th March 1974 Surrey County Council designated the Bramley conservation area. The current legislation is the Planning (Listed Building and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, which states that every Local Authority shall: 1.2. “From time to time determine which parts of their area are areas of special architectural or historic interest the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance, and shall designate those areas as conservation areas.” (Section 69(a) and (b).) 1.3. The Act also requires local authorities to “formulate and publish proposals for the preservation and enhancement of conservation areas…………”.(Section 71). 1.4. There has been an ongoing programme of enhancement schemes in the Borough since the mid 1970s. -

See Principles on main webpage. Woodland, wooded hills, views, sheep meadows, bluebells in spring In Brief This is a varied walk with one or two steep ascents. It passes through some of the most delightful woodland. You can do this walk with the Around Hascombe Hill walk in the same series as a figure-of-eight. It is fine at any time of the year, but especially in the spring because of the lambs and the bluebells. ? During the wet summer of 2021 there were several muddy patches, which mostly could be skipped around. In summer you may find some dense ? patches of nettles on the narrower paths. Your dog is welcome, with a lead of course. The walk begins at the car park opposite the White Horse pub in Has- combe, Surrey, www.w3w.co/ swordfish.composed.myself , postcode GU8 4JA . The children will be visiting the centre for the day to go on a nature walk, bug hunt, experience pond dipping and den building. This trip will link in with our learning about habitats and living things. With the Government providing free school meals for children at KS1, we will be offering a free packed lunch for your child on this trip, however you must indicate on the enclosed consent form that you would like us to do so. We have two menus from which to choose, Menu A and Menu B; please see the choice below. Please note that it is not possible to offer any alternatives to the menu below and that if a menu choice is not notified by Wednesday 24th May, you will need to provide your child with a packed lunch. This is because the kitchen staff have to place their food order in advance of the trip. COUNCIL NEWS Moated site, South Parit, Grayswood. Discussions relating to the proposed gift of the Scheduled Ancient Monument by the owner to the Society, first reported in Bulletin 253, are progressing well. Present proposals envisage the Society ultimately acquiring the freehold of the site, part of which would be leased to the Surrey Wildlife Trust. The Society would be responsible for maintaining the site and arranging for limited public access. It now seems probable that this exciting project will become a reality and a small committee has been formed to investigate and advise Council on the complexities involved. Council has expressed sincere and grateful thanks to the owner of South Park for her generosity. Castle Training Dig. Guildford Borough Council has approved a second season of excavation at the Castle, which will take place between the 8th and 28th July 1991. Those interested in taking part should complete the form enclosed with this issue of the Bulletin and return it to the Society.
