Bourguignat and recognized as valid in the fauna of Russia and the former USSR are illustrated with the type specimens and recently collected material. Each species is provided with data on (1) syntypes, or, at their absence, specimens iden- tified by Bourguignat; (2) a brief history of the name application as mentioned in the Russian literature; (3) published records of the species distribution; (4) taxonomic remarks. It appears that many species of the Russian fauna were erroneously identified due to the lack of access to the type material. Key words: J.-R. Morrison Recent anatomical observations on the reproductive systems of certain so-called "melanian" fresh-water snails and their marine rela- tives have clarified to a remarkable degree the supergeneric relation- ships of these fresh-water forms. The family of Melanians, in the broad sense, is a biological ab- surdity. We have the anomaly of one fresh-water "family" of snails derived from or at least structurally identical in peculiar animal characters to and ancestrally related to three separate and distinct marine famiHes. On the other hand, the biological picture has been previously misunderstood largely because of the concurrent and convergent evolution of the three fresh-water groups, Pleuroceridae, Melanopsidae, and Thiaridae, from ancestors common to the marine families Cerithiidae, Modulidae, and Planaxidae, respectively. The family Melanopsidae is definitely known living only in Europe. At present, the exact placement of the genus Zemelanopsis Uving in fresh waters of New Zealand is uncertain, since its reproductive characters are as yet unknown. Surprisingly, however, they are one of the most understudied groups of mollusks in North America. Recent data suggest that pleurocerids have an imperilment rate of 79% and many species are under immediate threat of extinction. As such, the time is now to better understand their biology, taxonomy, and phylogeny. Any study that wishes to understand a species group like pleurocerids must start with extensive field work and taxon sampling. As a part of that endeavor I rediscovered Leptoxis compacta, a snail that had not been collected live in 76 years. In chapter two, I report on this discovery and I propose a captive propagation plan and potential reintroduction sites for L. compacta in an attempt to prevent its extinction. In chapter three, I explore the often reported species level polyphyly on mitochondrial gene trees for gastropods in the family Pleuroceridae and its sister family Semisulcospiridae. Explanations for this paraphyly have ranged from unsatisfying (e.g. that species-level polyphyly is caused by historical introgression) to absurd (e.g.

Férussac, 1828) from a spring near Crisul Negru (Romania), and Holandriana holandri (C. Pfeiffer, 1828) from Lake Skutari (Montenegro), as well as Melanopsis costata Oliver, 1804 from Iraq, are con- sidered is this paper. Eight partial sequences of ribosomal 18S, and seven of mitochondrial COI were analysed. Maximum likelihood trees based on 18S confirm the placement of the Melanopsidae within the Cerithioidea, as well as the monophyly of the latter group. The COI-based tree confirms the placement of the Melanopsidae within the Cerithioidea, but does not confirm the monophyly of either Melanopsidae or Cerithioidea. The re- sults suggest that Fagotia should be synonymised with Melanopsis, Holandriana is a distinct genus, and Melanopsis costata is not congeneric with M. parreyssii. The application of molecular clock, with one point cali- bration for COI for the Hydrobiidae, estimated the times of divergence as 2.53±0.56 Mya for M. parreyssii and F. acicularis, 9.49±1.67 Mya for M. parreyssii and H. holandri, and 10.71±1.88 Mya for F. acicularis and H. holandrii. 2.5 Mya coincides with the beginning of the glacial period in Europe, and 8–12 Mya was the time when Lake Pannon covered the largest area.

Ya.I. Starobogatov travelled all over the former Soviet Union and collected numerous samples of mollusks and other invertebrates. As a result, he studied and described many new species, genera and families of different invertebrates, including mollusks. More than one thousand names of Mollusca were introduced by Ya.I. Starobogatov. This paper is a continuation of publishing the photographs of extant type specimens or topotypes of freshwater gastropods described by Ya.I. Starobogatov (1932–2004) with his disciples and coauthors. Photographs are given for 83 of 84 considered species belonging to Acroloxidae (Pulmonata), Valvatidae (Heterobranchia), and Viviparidae, Amnicolidae, Baicaliidae, Bithyniidae, Hydrobiidae, Lithoglyphidae, Melanopsidae and Thiaridae (Caenogastropoda). The data presentation includes detailed infor- mation about types; the “Additional records” section lists only the Zoological Institute (ZIN) catalog-based data because ZIN is the place of storage of the type specimens and the whole material studied by Ya.I.

Three main approaches to delineation of species boundaries (intuitive, conceptual, and operational) are discussed, with remarks on their practical usage in freshwater malacology. The central topic of the article is how malacologists changed their views on the essence of species category and the impact of these changes on the taxonomic practice. The opinions of some prominent and prolific workers in the field (Bourguignat, Kobelt, Hubendick, Starobogatov) are analysed as well as the debates around the theoretical foundations and practical results of the ‘Nouvelle École’ of the 19th century and the ‘comparatory’ systematics of the 20th century. It is shown that the operational approach to species delineation is the most popular in current systematic malacology, with strong inclination of practitioners to use reductionist methods. This complex system of refugia have been continuously functioning and evolving since the Late Tertiary through the entire Pleistocene and the Holocene. To understand the spatial and temporal evolution of refu- gia, detailed paleoecological investigations have been implemented, results of which are summed here. The high-grade fractal-like complexity of the environment led to the emergence of a so-called dual refugia, which is a unique feature of the Carpathian Basin. This temporally parallel but spatially differing presence of habitats for taxa of contrast- ing ecological needs was noted for paleotemperature gradients and temperate woodland and steppe habitat types as well. Furthermore, detailed geological and paleoecological analysis of a small Pleistocene hot-spring fed pond revealed information about the evolu- tion of endemic thermophylous freshwater gastropod taxa within this microrefugia. This chapter is aimed to give an overview of the nature, evolution of temperate terrestrial and freshwater gastropod refugia present in the Carpathian Basin during the Ice Age.

The freshwater molluscs fauna from Banat comprises 61 species (41 of gastropods and 20 of bivalves). 10 species were newly identified in this area by the authors. This paper’s aim is to establish the systematical and chorological catalogue of this fauna, to highlight the most characteristic and significant elements, the threats represented by human impact on the area’s waters and their molluscs communities. Résumé. La faune des mollusques aquatiques de Banat contient 61 espèces (41 escargots et 20 coquillages bivalves). 10 espèces ont été identifiées pour la première fois en cette région par les auteurs. L’objectif de ce travail est d’établir un catalogue systématique et chorologique de cette faune, de souligner les plus important de ses éléments et les menaces représentées par l’impact humain pour les habitats et les communautés aquatiques de la région. INTRODUCTION The Banat is the South-western province of Romania, bordered by the river Mureº in the North, the Danube in the South and the Southern Carpathian Mountains in the East. Some scattered material and information regarding the freshwater Mollusca from Banat date back to the 19th century. They were provided mainly by the naturalists from the Transylvanian Society for Nature Sciences in Sibiu, their collections being kept mainly in the museum from the same town.
