Tudor Place Manuscript Collection Anna (Williams) Peter Papers MS-18
Introduction
The correspondence, scrapbook, and printed material of Anna Wright (Williams) Peter (1872- 1961), the wife of Armistead Peter, Jr., (1870-1960), discuss her personal life and day to day engagements in the first quarter of the twentieth century. The legal and financial documents deal with her daily purchases as well as maintaining and renovating Tudor Place and Content Farm, Cambridge, New York. This collection includes letters, insurance policies, ledgers, receipts, newspaper clippings, and gift lists covering the years 1894-1923. These papers were a part of the estate Armistead Peter placed under the auspices of the Carostead Foundation, Incorporated, in 1966; the name of the foundation was changed to Tudor Place Foundation, Incorporated, in 1987. Use and rights of the papers are controlled by the Foundation. This register was prepared by Matthew Wood, an undergraduate History student at The American University, in 1992. This document was reformatted by Emily Rusch and revised by Tudor Place archivist Wendy Kail in 2020.

Biographical Sketch
Anna Wright (Williams) Peter (1872-1961) was born to Major Laurence Abert Williams (1832- 1879) and Sarah (Law) Williams (1837-1912) on January 17, 1872, in New York City. Her maternal grandfather was the New York industrialist George Law (1806-1881). The second of three surviving children, she married her cousin, Armistead Peter, Jr., (1870-1960) on April 25, 1894. After their marriage, Armistead Peter, Jr., and Anna (Williams) Peter lived in an apartment in the Fifth Avenue Hotel in New York City and at Content Farm, Cambridge, New York, the farm owned by Anna (Williams) Peter’s family. Their son Armistead Peter 3rd (1896-1983) was born in 1896 at the farm. Eventually the couple moved from New York City to Washington, D.C., where they lived at 1818 Q Street N.W., although they continued to travel frequently back to New York City and Cambridge, New York. Upon the death of Armistead Peter, Jr.'s, grandmother, Britannia (Peter) Kennon (1815-1911), Armistead Peter, Jr., inherited one-fifth of ownership of Tudor Place; he purchased the remaining four- fifths of the house from his siblings. Armistead Peter, Jr., and Anna (Williams) Peter moved into Tudor Place and in 1914 undertook a serious renovation of the house. From 1920 to 1923 Anna (Williams) Peter oversaw the renovation of the family property in upper New York state, which she inherited from her mother. Anna (Williams) Peter and Armistead Peter, Jr., spent their time at Tudor Place, Content Farm, Cambridge, New York, and travelling. During these years Anna (Williams) Peter’s major concerns were social activities and engagements, as well as the management of Tudor Place, which she shared with her husband. She was a member of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America. She contributed to many philanthropic organizations, including the Altar Society of the Church of the Transfiguration in New York City and St. Luke's Church in Cambridge, New York. She contributed to support wounded soldiers during both World War I and II, and gave generously to her less fortunate relatives and friends. Anna (Williams) Peter and Armistead Peter, Jr., separated in 1923; she moved to New York. She died in New York City on April 8, 1961.

Scope and Content
The Anna (Williams) Peter Papers include personal correspondence and financial and legal documents. Almost all of the material ends in 1923 upon her separation from Armistead Peter, Jr.; this collection provides little information beyond that date regarding financial or personal obligations. The bulk of the papers consists of personal correspondence written from friends and family, and discusses day to day activities and social engagements. There are concentrations of correspondence from relatives including her mother Sarah (Law) Williams, her uncle George Augustine Haines, Britannia (Peter) Kennon, Armistead Peter, Jr., and her son Armistead Peter 3rd, ranging from 1894 to 1923. Additional correspondence includes letters of condolence upon the death of her mother, Sarah (Law) Williams, and her aunt, Anna (Law) Wright. The business correspondence in the collection deals with Anna (Williams) Peter's charitable activities. Included are incoming letters of gratitude and receipts for the money she donated, as well as a few outgoing letters. Among her charities are the Altar Society of the Church of the Transfiguration in New York City, St. Luke's Church in Cambridge, New York, and the American Red Cross. The financial documents include receipts of personal and household purchases from 1918 to 1923, and receipts from the renovation of Content Farm, Cambridge, New York, from 1920 to 1923. One subject file on the Colonial Dames of America provides information on local members of the society, as well as the rules and by-laws, including a copy of the constitution of the society and the Acts in Council. The few legal documents in this collection deal primarily with fire insurance for Anna (Williams) Peter's houses. There is a list of items Anna (Williams) Peter sold to her son Armistead Peter 3rd in 1939. Material found in her desk in 1923 is present, including newspaper clippings, her wedding invitation, her birth certificate, gift registers, address books, and travel postcards from around the world,
