Akane Hosoyamada and Kallie Billadeau garnered all-conference fi rst team honors in 2013 while Nicole Ferrara and Margot Scharfe were named to the second team. Nicole Renault was named to the All-Rookie team. Scharfe was named the CHA’s best defensive forward for the second-straight year while Hosoyamada was honored as the best defenseman. Flanagan is one of the most recognized names in collegiate ice hockey, leading St. Lawrence to four consecutive NCAA Frozen Four appearances which places second among active coaches.

The 300-Club With a 4-1 win against Lindenwood on Feb. 27, 2013, Flanagan became just the sixth active coach in women’s ice hockey to win 300 career games. The win against Lindenwood was also his 70th as the head coach of the Orange.

Coaching the ‘Cuse After just eight seasons, Flanagan and the Orange have made a name for SU ice hockey and are contending with the nation’s best. Syracuse fi nished the 2009-10 season with an overall record of 18-17-1 and its fi rst post-season victory in program history with a win against Niagara in the semifi nals of the CHA tournament, doubling its win total after posting a 9-16-3 record in its inaugural season in 2008. Flanagan has recruited an all-star roster including Syracuse’s fi rst Winter Olympian, Stephanie Marty, who competed for her native Swiss National Team at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, where she helped earn Switzerland’s fi rst-ever medal in women’s hockey. Marty’s impressive work on and off the ice during the 2009-10 season earned her Second Team All-CHA, CHA All-Academic and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors. The 2010 College Hockey America (CHA) Coach of the Year led the Orange to its second consecutive appearance in the CHA Championship game in 2010-11, fi nishing the year with an overall record of 14-16-6. Flanagan’s squad boasted three members with CHA honors in 2010-11 led by Isabel Menard, who picked up her second straight selection to the All-CHA First Team list. Defender Akane Hosoyamada and goaltender Kallie Billadeau were both named to the CHA All-Rookie Team, making SU the only team with multiple student-athletes on the list.

Success at St. Lawrence Flanagan was the head coach for the St. Lawrence women’s ice hockey program from 1999-2008. He led the Saints to the women’s NCAA Frozen Four Championship fi ve times in his nine- year tenure, tying him for the most appearances in the country. Flanagan’s four-year run (2003-07) of Frozen Four appearances is also tied for best in college hockey. The Canton, N.Y. native accrued a 230-83-24 record with the Saints. His .692 win percentage is the sixth-best in the nation among active Division I coaches. Flanagan also has the seventh- most victories among active coaches. While at St. Lawrence, he directed his fl eet to the ECAC Hockey Tournament in each of his nine years. Flanagan’s 2003-04 team shared the ECAC Hockey regular-season crown and the 2005- 06 team won it outright. The 2005-06 Saints became the fi rst squad in any sport at St. Lawrence to win more than 30 games in a season.

Accolades for Accomplishments Flanagan made his presence felt in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) hockey league. After Flanagan led St. Lawrence to its fi rst National Championship game in only his second year, he was awarded the 2000-01 ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year and the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Coach of the Year. Flanagan’s student-athletes have garnered numerous awards, as well. Behind the Saints’ bench, Flanagan generated 10 All-Americans, three ECAC Goaltenders of the Year, one ECAC Player of the Year, two Sarah Devins Award Winners and more than three dozen ECAC All-Stars. He has coached two Olympians and several members of the Canadian National team.

National Prominence Flanagan was an assistant coach for the U.S. Women’s Select and National teams that competed at the Four Nations Cup in Sweden in November and won the gold medal in summer of 2008. Flanagan also assisted the U.S. Women’s National team to the World Championship in April held in Harbin, China. Flanagan was on the national coaching staff with Ohio State’s Jackie Barto and Plattsburgh State’s Kevin Houle.

Introduction to Hockey A 1980 St. Lawrence graduate, Flanagan was a defenseman for the Saints, serving as a team captain his senior season. He began his coaching career as head coach at Canton High School in 1982. Prior to the 1988 season, Flanagan joined the St. Lawrence men’s staff as an assistant coach and helped the Saints to two ECAC championships and NCAA appearances in 1989, 1992 and 1999.
