Royal Proclamation

The Prime Minister of declares May 9, 2014, the National Day of Honour to recognize the important work done by our Forces' members. The Ontario Women’s Hockey Association thanks former Stouffville-Markham Girls Hockey Association player, Cpl Katherine Thomasen (nee White), Air Force, and her colleagues for their outstanding service to Canada!

TEAM OWHA 2013 - 2014

The Ontario Women’s Hockey Association has completed another, wonderful season of success at all ages and levels of participation. House League and competitive programmes are providing positive hockey experiences, valuable life skills and lifetime friendships. Ontario High Schools are offering female teams and the OUA/CIS provide educational opportunities as players move into successful careers. Senior women continue to enjoy hockey as they balance family, work and recreation.

The OWHA established another historical first with the implementation of its proposal to to hold a “Long Game” in order to unify the country and promote female hockey. Players from Newfoundland to British Columbia participated in games at the atom, pee wee, bantam and midget levels with girls on Team White or Team Red. Scores carried from province to province as players at all ages gained the joy of playing for Team Canada. Sincere thanks to Canadettes for hosting the day and to RYR for the donation of jerseys and socks.

The OWHA is pleased to share with members that there are many non-traditional career opportunities. We partner with Air Georgian and OWHA Alumni, Mallory Deluce, to encourage female hockey players to become a pilot with their Cadet Program. Doors continue to open to OWHA participants as companies value the traits learned through participation in the team sport of hockey.

The 2014 season was special as the Canadian Women’s Hockey Team captured the hearts of the country with their drive and remarkable comeback to defeat their archrivals, Team USA to win the gold at Olympics. Eleven OWHA players led the team with starting the comeback. Congratulations to all members of Team Canada for the championship victory and special thanks to the organizations, coaches and supporters who assisted their development.

The second victory on the international scene saw Team Canada capture gold at the IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship in Hungary. The team was led by OWHA players with Captain Laura Wildfang providing great leadership.

The OWHA also achieved great success at the National level as Team Ontario Red captured the gold and Team Ontario Blue the silver at the U18 National Championship in Calgary.

3 For the first time since its inception in 2009, the Esso Cup was held in Ontario with Team Ontario Sudbury Lady Wolves winning bronze in a close game against the Host Team Stoney Creek Sabres. Congratulations to both teams and sincere thanks to Glen Boles, the Stoney Creek Girls Hockey Association and the volunteers on a great event.

The OWHA continues to be a leader on the international scene and answered the call from Hockey Canada to assist the Mexican Ice Hockey Federation through participation in the first Pan American Games competition. Congratulations to Sudbury Lady Wolves on being crowned champions.

In April 2014, women’s hockey received special recognition as the 2013 Women’s World Hockey Championship was named event of the year by the CSTA. The championship was also nominated for the event of the year by Tourism.

The OWHA has been recommended as a partner of CSIO (Canadian Sports Institute Ontario) as part of the Ontario High Performance Sport Initiative (OHPSI) Program for 2014 - 2016. This is the culmination of 2 years of extensive presentations with the OWHA graduating from the HPMP (High Performance Management Program). This was a highly competitive process with the successful sports being able to best demonstrate significant and enhanced progress on NSO/PSO alignment and a strong linkage through the High Performance Management Program (HPMP) tied to OHPSI strategic goals and targets. The OWHA sincerely thanks Melody Davidson for her participation in the final presentation and also thanks Bob Nicholson, Scott Smith, and Dean McIntosh of Hockey Canada for their support.

We are pleased to report a 13% decrease in the total number of suspensions called and we congratulate the teams and associations that are supporting fair and safe hockey. There is still work to do to cut down the high number of coaching staff suspensions as there were 336 suspensions to staff with 141 at the novice, atom and peewee levels.

This season, we implemented a tougher discipline to put bullying and cyberbullying in perspective. If an individual deliberately attempts to injure someone physically, they are assessed a match . If an individual intentionally says, writes or posts hurtful comments, it is deemed that these are deliberate attempts to injure emotionally. It is important that all stakeholders do their best to provide a safe and enjoyable environment where players, volunteers, officials and supporters can excel and share their love of hockey.

The Ontario Women’s Hockey Association is a collective of players, teams, administrators, officials, associations, leagues and supporters working as a team to provide positive hockey experiences. We sincerely thank everyone for their commitment to the players and programmes as we continue to strengthen the OWHA and also have a positive impact on the growth and development of female hockey throughout Canada and the world.

11 LIVING YOUR DREAMS

Very few people will understand and its next to impossible to explain the adversity that Amy has had endure with 18 hour days trying to keep up to the demanding education of Appleby college and playing club Hockey with the Oakville Hornets with no parents support. Even fewer people would understand the humble beginnings of growing up in Northern Labrador and the closest piece of pavement 1200kms (drive gravel road) south basically isolated from everywhere.. Amy played most of her hockey on a backyard rink in -30 temperatures with a video in a cooler to keep it from freezing and a copy of hockey Canada drills till she Amy Curlew , while playing hockey was perished. in Oakville, Ontario In our local arena Amy played with 8 year olds to 18 year olds. The amazing part is she researched all of this on her own from the drill book on hockey Canada website to something called the PWHL in Ontario. I had no clue when she was 8 or 9 years old what she was thinking when she said she wanted to move. However I saw the sparkle in her eyes and stayed very humble to her style of play and her aggressiveness and passion for the game. One day I was advised its time to stop being humble and start helping Amy after a major body check from an older boy.. so I picked up the phone and made contact with a women named Pat :):) who put me on to a lady with Hockey Canada" Kim" in Ottawa and from then on I have found nothing but professional good hearted people that have paved the way for Amy. Pat this story has many chapters and words cannot explain the adversity that somebody such as Amy from the North living so isolated " this is not like Northern Ontario or rural Newfoundland your stuck in a 15 km radius here in Goose Bay" has made a small impact in the Ontario hockey world whether it be the OFFSA or LLFHL.. If Amy ever has the opportunity and maturity to tell her story on where hockey has taken her and how/where it started it will be a good one. We brought her to Toronto to leave her there and it was the hardest decision a dad could ever make she didn't understand how a cross-walk worked and she went to school on a snowmobile here in Labrador with such huge differences ..Again I could never tell the story in an email.. the moral of it is when you have a bad day dealing with the politics of Hockey just remember this family is very gracious that Hockey Canada, the OWHA and hockey N.L are world class leaders at what they do and has given this girl an opportunity of a lifetime to experience the world get a awesome education and play competitive hockey and for that we are very thankful. I would love to extend my gratitude for allowing Amy this great opportunity and flexibility.

Thanks again Tony Curlew

26 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship wins major sport tourism award April 10, 2014

Related Links 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship The 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship, held last spring in Ottawa, Ont., has been named International Sport Event of the Year by the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA).

The event beat out the ICF Junior and Under-23 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Welland, Ont., and the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in London, Ont., for the honour, which was presented at the CSTA’s PRESTIGE Awards Luncheon on April 2 in Edmonton, Alta.

“This is a tremendous honour, and one the host committee in Ottawa is more than deserving of,” Hockey Canada president and CEO Bob Nicholson said. “This event was a success from start to finish, and was a spectacular showcase of women’s hockey, of Ottawa, and of the passion Canadians have for hockey.

“As with any event held in Canada, none of it would have been possible without the support of sponsors, and so much of the credit goes to Hockey Canada’s corporate partners, as well as the Government of Canada, Province of Ontario, City of Ottawa and Ottawa Tourism for providing the foundation on which the tournament could be built.” The top eight women’s hockey teams in the world converged on the nation’s capital from April 2-9, 2013, with the United States winning the gold medal with a 3-2 victory over Canada in the final.

The eight-day tournament at SBP Arena and the Nepean Sportsplex attracted 98,155 fans, the second-best attendance ever at the women’s world championship, and finished with a profit of just more than $500,000. The legacy funds were shared between Hockey Canada, its 13 branches and the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association, and will be used for grassroots programming and to help continue to grow the women’s game across the country.

The 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship was run in partnership with Senators Sports and Entertainment and the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association, under the direction of president and OWHA president Fran Rider, who served as co-chairs.

Execution of the event required an army of hundreds of volunteers, who worked alongside general manager Valerie Hughes and the host committee to ensure a successful event, and showcase the city and province.

The tournament partnered with the OWHA provincial championships, bringing thousands of players from across Ontario into the Ottawa area and turning the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship into the largest celebration of women’s hockey ever hosted.

Many of the minor hockey players were in attendance at SBP Arena on April 5, and contributed to a women’s hockey attendance record of 18,013 for the Canada-Finland preliminary round game.

It is the third time an international event hosted by Hockey Canada has won a CSTA PRESTIGE Award; the 2008 IIHF World Championship and 2006 IIHF World Junior Championship were both named CSTA Sport Event of the Year for events with a budget of more than $250,000, in 2009 and 2007, respectively.

In addition, BHP Billiton was named CSTA Sport Event Sponsor of the Year in 2011 for its support of the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship.

35 LONG GAME MAKES HISTORY – UNITES COUNTRY The Ontario Women’s Hockey Association was pleased to celebrate the IIHF World Girls’ Hockey Weekend! The 2013 edition of this event has evolved to span an entire weekend, from October 12-14th. This year’s event included the new Long Game Initiative, which featured four of the longest-running female games ever running from the east to west coast. In total, 1,584 players on 88 teams played in 44 games across the country, which will ran continuously at the Atom, Peewee, Bantam and Midget levels. The first puck drop was at 7 a.m. NT in Mount Pearl, N.L., and the final face-off was at 4 p.m. PT in Parksville, B.C. There were 264 officials running the games, with countless other coaches and volunteers involved across the country.

The OWHA is committed to growing the sport and developing female involvement across all aspects of female hockey.

Here in the OWHA, World Girls’ Hockey Weekend focused on:  Providing opportunities for girls and women of all ages to try the game for the first time in a positive, fun, safe environment,  Meeting new friends and having a chance to fall in love with a new sport  Learning about opportunities within female hockey communities including playing, coaching and officiating,  Learning about fair play, sportsmanship and teamwork,  Highlighting female hockey in our province, from beginner programs to highest level,  Current players becoming role models in the community and ambassadors of the sport.

The 2013 World Girls’ Hockey Weekend was a huge success with the OWHA and Canada leading the way in shaping the future of female hockey. The OWHA takes pride in being a leader in female hockey and plans to continue that tradition with many special events in Ontario. 36 LONG GAME INITIATIVE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2013
