The Ontario Women’s Hockey Association thanks former Stouffville-Markham Girls Hockey Association player, Cpl Katherine Thomasen (nee White), Air Force, and her colleagues for their outstanding service to Canada! TEAM OWHA 2013 - 2014 The Ontario Women’s Hockey Association has completed another, wonderful season of success at all ages and levels of participation. House League and competitive programmes are providing positive hockey experiences, valuable life skills and lifetime friendships. Ontario High Schools are offering female teams and the OUA/CIS provide educational opportunities as players move into successful careers. Senior women continue to enjoy hockey as they balance family, work and recreation. The OWHA established another historical first with the implementation of its proposal to Hockey Canada to hold a “Long Game” in order to unify the country and promote female hockey. Players from Newfoundland to British Columbia participated in games at the atom, pee wee, bantam and midget levels with girls on Team White or Team Red. Scores carried from province to province as players at all ages gained the joy of playing for Team Canada. Sincere thanks to Brampton Canadettes for hosting the day and to RYR for the donation of jerseys and socks. The OWHA is pleased to share with members that there are many non-traditional career opportunities. We partner with Air Georgian and OWHA Alumni, Mallory Deluce, to encourage female hockey players to become a pilot with their Cadet Program. Doors continue to open to OWHA participants as companies value the traits learned through participation in the team sport of hockey. The 2014 season was special as the Canadian Women’s Hockey Team captured the hearts of the country with their drive and remarkable comeback to defeat their archrivals, Team USA to win the gold at Sochi Olympics. Eleven OWHA players led the team with Brianne Jenner starting the comeback. Congratulations to all members of Team Canada for the championship victory and special thanks to the organizations, coaches and supporters who assisted their development. The second victory on the international scene saw Team Canada capture gold at the IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship in Hungary. The team was led by OWHA players with Captain Laura Wildfang providing great leadership. The OWHA also achieved great success at the National level as Team Ontario Red captured the gold and Team Ontario Blue the silver at the U18 National Championship in Calgary. 3 For the first time since its inception in 2009, the Esso Cup was held in Ontario with Team Ontario Sudbury Lady Wolves winning bronze in a close game against the Host Team Stoney Creek Sabres. Congratulations to both teams and sincere thanks to Glen Boles, the Stoney Creek Girls Hockey Association and the volunteers on a great event. The OWHA continues to be a leader on the international scene and answered the call from Hockey Canada to assist the Mexican Ice Hockey Federation through participation in the first Pan American Games competition. Congratulations to Sudbury Lady Wolves on being crowned champions. In April 2014, women’s hockey received special recognition as the 2013 Women’s World Hockey Championship was named event of the year by the CSTA. The championship was also nominated for the event of the year by Ottawa Tourism. The OWHA has been recommended as a partner of CSIO (Canadian Sports Institute Ontario) as part of the Ontario High Performance Sport Initiative (OHPSI) Program for 2014 - 2016. This is the culmination of 2 years of extensive presentations with the OWHA graduating from the HPMP (High Performance Management Program). This was a highly competitive process with the successful sports being able to best demonstrate significant and enhanced progress on NSO/PSO alignment and a strong linkage through the High Performance Management Program (HPMP) tied to OHPSI strategic goals and targets. The OWHA sincerely thanks Melody Davidson for her participation in the final presentation and also thanks Bob Nicholson, Scott Smith, and Dean McIntosh of Hockey Canada for their support. We are pleased to report a 13% decrease in the total number of suspensions called and we congratulate the teams and associations that are supporting fair and safe hockey. There is still work to do to cut down the high number of coaching staff suspensions as there were 336 suspensions to staff with 141 at the novice, atom and peewee levels. This season, we implemented a tougher discipline to put bullying and cyberbullying in perspective. If an individual deliberately attempts to injure someone physically, they are assessed a match penalty. If an individual intentionally says, writes or posts hurtful comments, it is deemed that these are deliberate attempts to injure emotionally. It is important that all stakeholders do their best to provide a safe and enjoyable environment where players, volunteers, officials and supporters can excel and share their love of hockey. The Ontario Women’s Hockey Association is a collective of players, teams, administrators, officials, associations, leagues and supporters working as a team to provide positive hockey experiences. We sincerely thank everyone for their commitment to the players and programmes as we continue to strengthen the OWHA and also have a positive impact on the growth and development of female hockey throughout Canada and the world. The Essence of Teamwork Respect is earned. WINNING TEAMS… The strength of the team Honesty is appreciated. Trust each other Is each individual member… Trust is gained.
