  • Mughals at War: Babur, Akbar and the Indian Military Revolution, 1500 - 1605
Mughals at War: Babur, Akbar and the Indian Military Revolution, 1500 - 1605 A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Andrew de la Garza Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: John F. Guilmartin, Advisor; Stephen Dale; Jennifer Siegel Copyright by Andrew de la Garza 2010 Abstract This doctoral dissertation, Mughals at War: Babur, Akbar and the Indian Military Revolution, examines the transformation of warfare in South Asia during the foundation and consolidation of the Mughal Empire. It emphasizes the practical specifics of how the Imperial army waged war and prepared for war—technology, tactics, operations, training and logistics. These are topics poorly covered in the existing Mughal historiography, which primarily addresses military affairs through their background and context— cultural, political and economic. I argue that events in India during this period in many ways paralleled the early stages of the ongoing “Military Revolution” in early modern Europe. The Mughals effectively combined the martial implements and practices of Europe, Central Asia and India into a model that was well suited for the unique demands and challenges of their setting. ii Dedication This document is dedicated to John Nira. iii Acknowledgments I would like to thank my advisor, Professor John F. Guilmartin and the other members of my committee, Professors Stephen Dale and Jennifer Siegel, for their invaluable advice and assistance. I am also grateful to the many other colleagues, both faculty and graduate students, who helped me in so many ways during this long, challenging process.

  • E - Gazette Mk II
E - Gazette Mk II New Zealand Antique & Historical Arms Association Inc. # 65 June 2016 http://www.antiquearms.org.nz/ EDITORIAL You may have noticed that this journal is getting more political of late, for which I make no apology. The reason being that this year is shaping up to be another watershed year for New Zealand firearm owners. As you know there is currently a Select Committee Inquiry under way into how criminals access firearms. I hope you have made your submission, which close on the 8 June. At the same time Police along with other govern- ment agencies are reviewing all aspects of the Arms Act and firearms administration. A whole raft of things are being considered, including making ALL semi auto rifles and shotguns require an E endorsement and even registration of all firearms. Whether these new restrictions actually make it onto the statute book is up to you. It will be no good complaining once the new laws are passed. It is a year to make your voice count, by writing submissions at the appropriate time and in supporting those organisations such as SSANZ and COLFO that work hard to safe- guard your chosen hobby. Meanwhile the Mountain Safety Council seem bent on further dismantling the firearms safety programme, by doing away with their volunteer instructors and replacing them with a few paid full time workers. One wonders how that will work in the remoter rural communities. My thanks to all of you who have contributed to this issues, Phil The e-Gazette Mk II is a monthly news-letter circulated free to members of the NZAHAA and their friends by e-mail only.

Although the Russian Empire was steadily expanding across Asia, the British Empire already spanned Africa, Asia, Australia, the Middle East, the Americas and the Pacific Ocean. British armies were deployed in various colonies, and the Royal Navy held it all together. British armies in the colonies were a combination of regular British (English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish) regiments and locally raised regiments whose officers were both local and British. British and local political officers ran highly effective intelligence networks throughout the colonies. British colonial armies frequently dispatched expeditions to fight in neighboring countries or establish a presence for political goals. The British army was the past master at mounting expeditions and relied on its reputation for military excellence, technological superiority, unit cohesion, excellent intelligence and contracted logistic support from the local infrastructure. British expeditions were usually combined units from British colonial armies and allied local armies and were based on political alliances.
