Here is a famous instance of the counterexample due to Keith Lehrer: Suppose that I am offered a bowl of candy and in the bowl are small round red sugar balls. I do not choose to take one of the red sugar balls because I have a pathological aversion to such candy. (Perhaps they remind me of drops of blood …) It is logically consistent to suppose that if I had chosen to take the red sugar ball, I would have taken one, but not so choosing, I am utterly unable to touch one (Lehrer 1968: 32). Here is another famous instance of the counterexample due to Susan Wolf: [Suppose] a person attacked on a dark street would have screamed if she had chosen … [but is] too paralyzed by fear to consider, much less choose, to scream (Wolf 1990: 99). -

OBJECTIVES The main objective of this unit is to introduce the course in Philosophy of Human Person, a course in philosophy that helps us to understand the nature of human being. After defining what Philosophy of Human Person is, the unit deals with its distinguishing characteristics vis-à-vis other branches of Anthropology and Psychology. There are other disciplines that study human beings. Hence an attempt is made to differentiate them from Philosophy of Human Person. Different courses in philosophy make use of different methods and Philosophy of Human Person has its own method. Without going into details of the different philosophical methods, the unit examines the methods that Philosophy of Human Person employs. We have also discussed briefly the question of objectivity of this discipline. The question assumes importance when we consider the fact that any study of human person tends to become subjective. A section on the importance of this course in the overall plan of philosophy makes the unit complete. All in all, the unit enables the student to take a plunge into the world of human person from a philosophical perspective. -

While a few early chapters are historically organized, my goal in the historical chapters is to trace a developmental progression of thought that introduces basic philosophical methods and frames issues that remain relevant today. Later chapters are topically organized. These include philosophy of science and philosophy of mind, areas where philosophy has shown dramatic recent progress. This text concludes with four chapters on ethics, broadly construed. I cover traditional theories of right action in the third of these. Students are first invited first to think about what is good for themselves and their relationships in a chapter of love and happiness. Next a few meta-ethical issues are considered; namely, whether they are moral truths and if so what makes them so. -

A POST-ESSENTIALIST, PLURALIST AND INTERACTIVE ACCOUNT OF A CONTESTED CONCEPT Maria Kronfeldner Forthcoming 2018 MIT Press Book Synopsis February 2018 For non-commercial, personal use only. Topic The concept of human nature has always been an important issue, be it for philosophy, sciences or politics. In the 20th century, it has been severely criticized. From a scientific perspective, the concept of human nature has been criticized for relying on an outdated essentialism and a misguided nature-nurture divide. From a social perspective, it has been criticized since it furthers dehumanization, as part of which some people are regarded as less human. This book takes these criticisms seriously and asks: What could it possibly mean to talk about a ‘human nature’ despite these critiques? Ultimate goal The ultimate goal of the book is revisionary. It aims at a constructive philosophical account of the perennial concept that humans have a ‘nature’. Taking the above- mentioned criticisms into account, it aims to makes sense of four core aspects of the concept of human nature, namely species-specificity, typicality, fixity, and normalcy. The resulting revisionary account of ‘human nature’ minimizes dehumanization and does not fall back to outdated biological knowledge about evolution, kind essentialism, and the nature-nurture divide. The account is post- essentialist since it eliminates the concept of an essence. It is pluralist since it defends that there are – in the world – different things that correspond to three different post- essentialist concepts. It is interactive since nature and culture are understood as interacting at the developmental, epigenetic and evolutionary level and since humans are shown to create their nature via explanatory and classificatory looping effects. -

Hobbes, Aristotle, and Human Happiness
Hobbes, Aristotle, and Human Happiness During his life in philosophy Thomas Hobbes engaged in several debates. Among his sparring partners the dearest to him was not a contemporary (such as Descartes, White, Bramhall, or Wallis) but Aristotle. This article explores the tension between Hobbes and Aristotle as it appears in metaphysics (including the study of nature), ethics (including psychology), and politics. The article will close with a comparison of their conceptions of human happiness. First impressions would suggest that Hobbes’s ridicule of Aristotle is thoroughly intended and his appreciation of the Philosopher sensationally low: And I beleeve that scarce any thing can be more absurdly said in natural Philosophy, than that which now is called Aristotles Metaphysics; nor more repugnant to Government, than much of that hee hath said in his Politiques; nor more ignorantly, than a great part of his Ethiques.1 Hobbes’s phrasing is certainly impressive, but if the claims he makes are left unspecified, they remain merely words. Having said that, when explicating Hobbes’s position toward Aristotle and Aristotelianism two issues must be taken into consideration: the exact target and the exact content of Hobbes’s criticism.2 The interrelations between Hobbes and Aristotle and Hobbes and Aristotelianism have been studied at great length and in detail.3 To summarise the major conclusion in Hobbes’s own words: vain-philosophy or spiritual darkness derive “partly from Aristotle, partly from Blindnesse of understanding”.4 It is fairly clear that Hobbes’s primary target is a combination of selected Aristotelian doctrines and their adaptation to the Catholic dogma, or, to follow his own coinage, “Aristotelity”.5 To be content with this, I think, is to overlook the nuances of Hobbes’s position. -

It looks like a religion, and yet it is not. Its doctrine are firmly believed by our people with almost religious zeal. Yet in' spite of countless numbers of Confucian temples in China, Confucius is not a god. To our people he is merely "the Most Saintly Teacher". The whole writings of the Confucian scholars can be termed Confucianism. Certain ’ customs and institutions in China which are the causes or the effects of Confucianist thought can be t巴rmed Confucianism. It has embraced some of the more admirable elements of traditional Chinese religion, such as a respect toward Heaven and worship of ancestors. Confucius advocated that man can be sage through self-cultivation and inner enlightenment. Confucian temples stand as memorial monuments rather than functioning religious institutions such as churches. Confucianism is more than a cr巴巴 d to be professed or rejected.- It has becom 巴 a pattern worked into. the Chinese life and society. As a cultural influen 間, it is probably the steering wheel of our mental and institutional development. In philosophy, Confucianism stands for an ideal of human relationship in harmony with the universal order. In ethics, as well as in politics, it stands for a rationalized social order, based upon personal cultivation. In literature and in art, it stands for the clarification of man’s experience and the crystallization of life. This is sheerly a humanistic approach, for Confucianism is nothing else than humanism. -
