ell folks, June is here. Where the time went, who Wknows, but here we are. State Festival is only a few short weeks away. I hope you are all registered. It’s to get yourself registered. If you can’t make it for the whole weekend, that’s OK, there are day rates. You can find them on the website at washingtondancefestival2019.com. It’s hard to believe that this is my last issue. It’s been a wild ride. With each issue that goes online, I think of my sweet dad, who was the editor so many years ago. I truly believe that he is watching over me and giving me a “Thumbs-up” with each issue. Of course, he’s also laughing at me, just a little bit. Like Father like Daughter – Right!?!? 2018-19 Directories are out and available I know it’s been a rough transition from the printed for purchase. They are $5 per copy magazine, but I hope you are getting used to the online version Email Holly Gonseth at and are enjoying it. It’s so nice to be able to have color pictures [email protected] and the ads pop so much better in color. I truly want to thank my crew. Kay Mahan, my Financial person. She has Washington State Festival doing an awesome job these past few issues and, I think, is ready to take over in September. I will be there for moral support and any other is she needs it. 8 | FOOTNOTES www.squaredance-wa.org JUNE 2019 What’s New At This Year’s WA State Square Dance Festival? June 20-22, 2019 at the State Fairgrounds, Puyallup WA.

Attendees at the 2019 WA State Festival (the Rainier Rendezvous) will discover many familiar, some different, and a few new experiences during their visit. Here’s are a few highlights:

NEW

• For the first time in the history of WA State Square Dance Festivals, a live band (the Ghost Riders) will perform each night, even including Thursday’s Trail-End dance. Many of the callers attending the festival will practice with the band ahead of time and will perform on-stage with the band during the evening programs. • Thursday’s Trail-End dance is included in the festival registration package. • Text Notifaction availability. By simply providing your name and cellphone number when you arrive at the venue (or by accessing the Get Notified tab on the Rainier Rendezvous website), festival attendees can subscribe to a free service to receive text notifications for any/all program changes. From a menu of available “categories” (e.g. Mainstream, Plus, Advanced, Rounds, Clogging, High Energy, Youth, RV/Campers, etc.) attendees can select the ones for which they would like to receive text notifications during the festival. Examples of the type of text notifications one might expect (depending upon which categories the attendee selects): 1.) “Caller B is replacing Caller A for the 2:00pm slot in the Main Hall”. 2.) “The RV security gate for re-entry will be closing at 9:30 pm tonight.”

DIFFERENT

• The “Pageant” will take a modified approach this year. It will still have the most familiar major element, notably an Awards Ceremony to recognize several of the most-deserving members of our dance community. There will be no “entertainment” (skit) this year since there’s no State Festival in 2020. In order to keep things moving along quickly during the 60 minutes allotted for the ceremony, picture-taking will occur immediately afterwards during a Cookies & Coffee “get-together” for all attendees and award recipients. • WiFi is available throughout the venue. Instead of printing a “Program Book” (which will go out-of-date within minutes of being printed) the full schedule will be updated and available online in real-time on the Rainier Rendezvous website. There will also be postings at/near the entrance to each of the halls, including QR code- links to the relevant online program page [and don’t forget the Text Notification for changes noted above].

FAMILIAR

• Lots of friends and acquaintances from near, far, and wide will gather together for a fun-filled weekend! • 50+ entertainers include many well-known local, regional, and national callers, cuers, and clogging instructors. • A full range of styles (square dance, round dance, clogging), levels (new dancer, mainstream, plus, advanced), and phases (II, III, IV, V, VI), high energy and youth-focused dancing. • 6 halls. The large main hall will primarily be reserved for mainstream dancing, but will also have some plus dancing included in the program. The “dedicated”, smaller halls are Plus , Advanced, Rounds, Clogging, Youth/High Energy. • On-site RV camping, nearby hotel accommodations, onsite and nearby food options. • Free parking. • Vendors offering dance-related goods and services.

hanks to everyone for their patience and understanding Tas I apologize to you AGAIN. I have had significant respiratory issues recently. My heart is not as efficient as it used to be at getting the oxygen to my brain and my body. When I’m fighting both respiratory and cardiac issues I’m even slower than usual. The Round Dance Committee has been very responsive and helpful. So please thank the representative from your council for being so willing to jump in at the last minute to help every time I ask. I hope you are safe and your property is undamaged. The Midwest has seen so much more severe weather than we have, but I know that some parts of Washington saw some serious DEADLINE FOR bouts of wind and rain. I’m seeing lots of May flowers and the long term weather forecasts suggest we will see summer FOOTNOTES weather soon. I’m looking forward to that. Since dances went to the committee very recently, the 10TH OF dances taught at the Spring Sashay were available. I put both of Susan Healea’s newdances out as choices for May and June. EACH MONTH Both of them were selected. Those of you who were in Moxie for the party already know these them. I hope your cuers will try the other dances as well. The Round of the Month for May is “ Come A-Tricklin’ Down” by Susan Healea. Other dances which were considered were “Puttin’ On the Ritz” by Sharon and Casey Parker, and “Will You Come and Marry Me?” by Stella and Peter Tennant. The Round of the Month for June is “Special Advertise to Me” by Susan Healea. Other dances which were considered were “Until the Next Time ” by Steven and Valerie Murphy, your awesome and “A Tear Fell” by Carla and Barry Peck. Pressing to Perfection

In design & fitting classes, instructors have said, spend one-third of your time fitting, one-third sewing and one-third pressing. Some stitchers don't recognize the importance of pressing while sewing. They wait until the sewing is finished and then do all the pressing - wrong! Pressing while sewing will improve the appearance of every seam and the total look of the garment.

Before crossing one seam with another, press them. The first press is called 'melding'. Lay the seam on the ironing board, exactly the same way it went under the pressor foot and press the stitching line. This will shrink the thread and embed it in the fabric. Prove it to yourself, run your finger down a seam and feel the row of stitches. Then press and feel it again. The thread will have been forced into the fabric. The seam is stronger, tighter, harder to rip out.

Next step, press the seam in the direction it goes in the garment. Either open or to one side. Don't be a pussy-foot presser. Use some force, lean on the iron, lots of steam. Just sliding the iron gently across the seam won't do it. Press means to use pressure. If you were working for the House of Channel in Paris, your steam iron would weigh 16 pounds. Imagine ironing with a bowling ball. When you turn the piece over to the right side, there should not be a valley at the seam line. The fabric should lay flat.

If the fabric is resisting pressing, such as gabardine, then hit it with a board, called a tailor's clapper. (Pressing is great for relieving frustration.) I mean a real board. It must be hard wood, oak or maple, etc. Smoothly sanded and unfinished. Do not use soft woods, ie: pine or cedar. Soft wood will splinter and ooze sap on to the fabric. Purchase pre-sanded boards at the hardware store. It doesn't have to be rounded on the ends like this one or have a handle. A good size is 4 inches wide x 18 to 24 inches x 1/2 inch thick. Tailors who work with wool suiting fabrics actually beat on the warm fabric to shape sleeve heads and collars.

As soon as you remove the iron from the fabric, lay the board on top, press down hard and hold for a ten count. The steam iron moistens and heats the fabric, the board cools and drys it. By holding the seam down while it cools and drys, the seam allowances stay in place. This is a great technique to really set the crease in pants. Press the crease and hit it with the board. I have special board that is three feet long just for pressing pants.

ummer is here, and square dance schedules have changed. SNot only are there a number of weekend festivals, week- long programs at Circle 8, and State festivals going on in all of the states surrounding us, but this will be the month of Rainier Council hosting the Washington State Festival in Puyallup, Washington. Featured, will be the live band, Ghost Riders, wh0 have performed at numerous national festivals, but never before at the Washington State Festival. The Ghost Riders will be performing on all three days, beginning at the Thursday night Trails In dance. This special evening is included in the registration, which is also a “never before,” or at least not in my recent memory. Last month I reported that one-third of the dancers will single, so don’t be shy about coming out; there should be plenty of unaccompanied dancers. I don’t have an update on solo activities (lunch, dinner, socializing), but I have been assured that plans are in the works. “if you build it, they will come” This year’s festival is going high tech, and instead of programs, we will be handing out information on how to access ainier caller and level schedules on your Smart phone. The advantage is that you can sign up to get alerts about changes in the schedule, R when you favorite callers are performing, and an activity schedule for solos. For those of us who aren’t too fond of high endezvous tech, there will also be a printed sheet with hall schedules, in R addition to a white board where changes will be posted. Each hall Washington State Square Dance Festival will have a board with the schedule for that day. June 20-22, 2019 If you haven’t registered yet, you can pay by credit card Washington State Fairgrounds, Puyallup online, or you can print out a registration form and send in a check. The major advantage to registering early is that you don’t have to stand in line at the registration table before going to the dance hall. Just wear your red ribbon, head to the hall, and when you want a break from dancing, come to the registration desk to pick up visitor information, a tote bag, purchase a festival badge CRYPTOQUOTE: One letter stands for another. if you don’t have one, and pick up your bar (bars are included in the registration fee, but not available until the festival). If you want to be a volunteer at competition please shoot an email to [email protected] and let us know when you can help (Friday set up, Friday night dance, nother year of competition for the Teens of Washington, Saturday set up, Saturday during competition, Saturday night AOregon and Canada has come to an end. As usual the clean up) and if there is something specific you would like to kids who competed were amazing and obviously worked hard help with, or if you are willing to work anywhere needed. all year in preparation. Sadly our competition gets smaller and smaller every year, with less dancers on the floor and less Tiffany and Matthew Richard supporters in the stands. It is hard to keep our hobby going if 2020 PNTSDF Coordinators we don’t support each other. So I am asking for more people [email protected] to come dance with these kids, come watch all their hard work pay off and support them.

Competition costs less than $5 and that includes a dance on Friday night, watching competition during the day on Saturday, and another dance on Saturday night before awards. How many times can you go to two dances and support our youth and the future of our hobby for less than $5? This year competition is close to home, it will be at Auburn Mountainview High School. Please come out and support these kids and keep our competition alive.

at the 69th National June 17 to 20

The Spokane Convention Center is going all out to host our convention. It is bigger than it was in 2012 so we will have more space to dance.

There will not be any with Hoopfest because our convention will be the third weekend of June. The weekend before Hoopfest.

That is all we know right now. More information will be added as we receive it.

Let’s get to work and make the 2019 State Festival a great party and then we can look forward to 2020.

The colors for the Convention will be black & white. So start dreaming up a new outfit in those colors. Model T’s and Diamond Squares are all ready to go.
