Zawia DEAN OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND 2017 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the relationship between the print novel and new media. It argues that this relationship is productive; that is, it locates the novel and new media within a tense, but symbiotic relationship. This requires an understanding of media relations that is ecological, rather than competitive. More precise, this dissertation investigates ways that the novel incorporates new media. The word “incorporate” refers both to embodiment and physical union. -
Ethics and Evolution
ETHICS AND EVOLUTION John Scales Avery December 1, 2017 Introduction In October, 2017, one of the Danish state television channels, DR2, broad- cast two programs about current religious opposition to Darwin’s theory of evolution1. Much of this opposition originated in the United States, and was aimed at preventing the teaching of evolution in schools. The attacks on Darwin’s theory (by now, not a theory but a well-established scientific fact) were twofold. First the claim that it is not true, and secondly, pointing out that historically, Social Darwinism has led to horrible consequences. One of the arguments against the truth of Darwinian evolution is that it violates the second law of thermodynamics, according to which the disorder of the universe always increases with time. How then can life on earth, with its amazing order, be possible? The answer is that the earth is not a closed system. A flood of information- containing free energy reaches the earth’s biosphere in the form of sunlight. Passing through the metabolic pathways of living organisms, this informa- tion keeps the organisms far away from thermodynamic equilibrium, which is death. As the thermodynamic information flows through the biosphere, much of it is degraded to heat, but part is converted into cybernetic infor- mation and preserved in the intricate structures which are characteristic of life. The principle of natural selection ensures that when this happens, the configurations of matter in living organisms constantly increase in complex- ity, refinement and statistical improbability. This is the process which we call evolution, or in the case of human society, progress2. -

24th WORLD SCIENCE-FICTION CONVENTION PROGRESS REPORT NO. 1 CLEVELAND, OHIO Sept. 2,3,4&5, 1966 GUEST OF HONOR - L. SPRAGUE DE CAMP THE SEARCH FOR THE HISTORICAL L. SPRAGUE DE CAMP OR, THE COMPLEAT DRAGON-CATCHER BY ROGER ZELAZNY Let me tell you about L. Sprague de Camp. Thia is the sixth time I’ve tried. (It’s not that you weren't paying attention. The first five trials, wisely, are paper snowballs which my cat at least is enjoying. By and large, though, her tastes differ from yours and mine. Good thing, too.) It is a hard, hard thing to write about someone you admire hell out of, without sounding like an ad man pushing a new brand of filter-tips or next year's model Fordrolet. This is not my intention, but if it seems to seep in around the edges -- well, you know ... If you've read de Camp, that is, you know. I've never met Mister de Camp, so I can't give you a word portrait or even a line-drawing as to lineament and design, favorite frowns and smirks, taste in cravats, etc. All I know is what I've read in the books with the rocket ships on the covers and the ones without the rocketships, too. So let me tell you about the L. Sprague de Camp^ know. He went and wrote whole big stacks of things. The first one I read was called LEST DARKNESS FALL* Which is why I read more. Quickly then, I read ROGUE QUEEN. -

The Enigmas of Borges, and the Enigma of Borges
THE ENIGMAS OF BORGES, AND THE ENIGMA OF BORGES Peter Gyngell, B.A. Thesis submitted to Cardiff University in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2012 ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS My thanks go to my grandson, Brad, currently a student of engineering, who made me write this thesis; to my wife, Jean, whose patience during the last four years has been inexhaustible; and to my supervisor, Dr Richard Gwyn, whose gentle guidance and encouragement have been of incalculable value. Peter Gyngell March 26, 2012 iii CONTENTS PREFACE 1 INTRODUCTION 2 PART 1: THE ENIGMAS OF BORGES CHAPTER 1: BORGES AND HUMOUR 23 CHAPTER 2: BORGES AND HIS OBSESSION WITH DEATH 85 CHAPTER 3: BORGES AND HIS PRECIOUS GIFT OF DOUBT 130 CHAPTER 4: BORGES AND HUMILITY 179 PART 2: THE ENIGMA OF BORGES CHAPTER 5: SOME LECTURES AND FICTIONS 209 CHAPTER 6: SOME ESSAYS AND REVIEWS 246 SUMMARY 282 POSTSCRIPT 291 BIBLIOGRAPHY 292 1 PREFACE A number of the quoted texts were published originally in English; I have no Spanish, and the remaining texts are quoted in translation. Where possible, translations of Borges’ fictions will be taken from The Aleph and Other Stories 1933-1969 [Borges, 1971]; they are limited in number but, because of the involvement of Borges and Norman Thomas di Giovanni, they are taken to have the greater authority; in the opinion of Emir Rodriguez Monegal, a close friend of Borges, these translations are ‘the best one can ask for’ [461]; furthermore, this book contains Borges’ ‘Autobiographical Essay’, together with his Commentaries on each story. -
