His works have been performed at a variety of venues including the Midwest Clinic, The College Band Directors’ National Conference and the International Trumpet Guild. He currently holds the position of Director of Instrumental Publications for the FJH Music Company. Three Celtic Dances is a three‐movement work based on Scottish dances with Balmages’ original material. The opening Reel begins with a light‐ hearted presentation of the melody in typical Scottish fashion. As the movement develops, rhythms and harmonies become more intense and driving before a burst of percussion brings it to a sudden close. The second movement, Air, uses solo alto saxophone in a lush and lyrical setting of Well May I Behold My Faithful Brown‐Hair'd Maid. The theme, presented in two contrasting settings, becomes extremely powerful with soaring countermelodies before returning to the tranquility of the opening. The final movement, Jig, makes use of expansive percussion as it celebrates one of the most well known Celtic dance forms. The composer layers themes and various sounds throughout as the work builds to a furious conclusion supported by an enormous battery of percussion. The piece is approximately seven minutes in duration. – Courtesy of FJH Music. Scenes from “The Louvre” Norman Dello Joio was born to Italian immigrants in New York City. After holding the position of organist and choirmaster of the Star of the Sea Church on City Island at age 14, the composer received a scholarship from the Julliard School of Music and studied composition. Scenes from the Louvre is a five‐movement work depicting the development of the Louvre during the Renaissance. Originally a palace built in the twelfth century, after the choice of King Louis the XIV to live elsewhere, the palace was left as a royal art gallery and later occupied by two academies before opening as a museum in 1793. The piece was originally composed for a 1964 television series on the Louvre. After winning an Emmy for outstanding television score, the work was adapted for the Baldwin‐Wallace College Wind Ensemble. The piece is approximately eleven minutes in duration. Courtly Airs and Dances After earning his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in composition from the Eastman School of Music during the 1950s, Ron Nelson joined the faculty at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island before retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1993. His career has produced compositions for a variety of genres from wind band to orchestra to chorus. As conductor Leonard Slatkin described the composer, "Nelson is the quintessential American composer. He has the ability to move between conservative and newer styles with ease. The fact that he's a little hard to categorize is what makes him interesting." Courtly Airs & Dances is a suite of Renaissance dances that are characteristic of five European countries during the 1500’s. Three of the dances (Basse Dance, Pavane, and Allemande) are meant to emulate the music of Claude Gervaise by drawing on the style of his music as well as the characteristics of other compositions from that period. The festival opens with a fanfare‐like Intrada followed by Basse Dance (France), Pavane (England), Saltorello (Italy), Sarabande (Spain), and Allemand (Germany). The piece is approximately thirteen minutes in duration. –Ron Nelson Crown Imperial British composer and conductor William Walton produced a wealth of compositions, including orchestral and choral works, chamber music and ceremonial music, as well as notable film scores. Walton studied at Oxford University in England beginning at the young age of 14 and left after four years to begin producing works. The coronation march Crown Imperial was composed for the coronation of King George VI in 1937. The piece is very majestic and generally played slightly slower than American marches, as with many of the standard British marches. The work has a faster middle section that some say is in the style of Elgar before returning to previous material and ending with a majestic finish. The piece is approximately seven minutes in duration. Over The Hill March Takeo Hoshiya is an up and coming composer born in Tokyo. He recently received first prize at Clayton State University for his work Instability Principle for flute, clarinet, cello and vibraphone. Over the Hill March takes on a new characteristic than traditional American marches as Hoshiya adds a bit of Japanese flavor. A lyrical saxophone solo in the middle of the piece changes up the traditional march format while still staying true to the American march form. The piece is approximately four minutes in duration.
