ORFIELD PART II* LOCAL GOVERNMENT In 1841 local government was reformed by introducing parish councils to which the peasants elected some representatives. 233 In turn the parish councils elected members of the county councils. The pastors were no longer to be chairmen of the parish councils, but continued to be members ex officio. The right to vote was extended to owners of but 1.4 acres. The councils were created to deal with school matters and poor relief; but road maintenance, public health, business and industrial licenses, and liquor licenses were also within their province. The right to vote in local elections was long narrowly restricted. Under legislation of 1837 the six largest cities other than Copenhagen chose coun- cilmen on a property basis permitting only seven per cent of the population to vote. Early in the nineteenth century rural communities began to vote for poor law and school officials. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 TH"£Sc S F 776y 2 Abstract Historians have generally dismissed the ministry of Henry Addington as an absurd interlude in the political career of William Pitt, the Younger, and the few attempts to rehabilitate Addington have been unable to overcome the weight of this negative historiography. The focus of contemporary and historical criticism has centred on the foreign and war policies of the ministry, but this has failed to take into account the serious and interrelated diplomatic, military, social, and political problems faced by the government. Social unrest caused largely by high prices of grain, political pressure from interests that had been hurt by the closure of European markets to British trade, and a poor diplomatic and strategic position meant that peace was highly desirable but that concessions were necessary to obtain it. -

INTRODUCTION Edmund Burke needs to be rescued. His legacy is held hostage by the modem conservative movement, which proclaims Burke to be its intellectual progenitor. Conservatives consider Burke the fountainhead of their political philosophy - the great thinker and eloquent eighteenth-century British statesman who provides conservatism with a distinguished heritage and a coherent body of thought. Burke has achieved iconic status; Reaganites wore his silhouette on their neckties.' Legal scholars applaud court decisions and jurisprudential philosophies as Burkean, or denounce them as not being genu- inely Burkean. But Burke's memory has been wrongfully appropriated. Ed- mund Burke was a liberal - at least by today's standards - and it is time to restore him to his proper home. This Article has three objectives. The first is to demonstrate Burke's lib- eralism. -

DOI: 10.1057/s41293-018-0071-2 Accepted for publication: 2 January 2018 The Conservative Party’s Leadership Election of 2016: Choosing a Leader in Government Abstract This paper examines the British Conservative Party’s leadership election of 2016, held in the aftermath of the UK’s referendum vote to leave the European Union. The paper analyses the contest using Stark’s theoretical framework, which assumes that leaders are chosen according to a hierarchy of criteria: acceptability, electability and competence, in that order. The eventual victor, Theresa May, was indeed the strongest candidate on all three criteria. However, electability appeared subordinate to competence during the contest. Electability is usually regarded as more basic than competence because parties must first win elections before they can start governing. However, governing parties are already in office and new leaders chosen mid-term must begin governing immediately. Current competence in office may be a prerequisite for future electability. The paper reviews other post-war leadership elections in Britain and finds that competence normally superseded electability as a selection criterion in governing parties. This finding implies a modification of Stark’s framework. Peter Allen 3 Abstract In this thesis I use original empirical data to examine the impact of the political experience of MPs before they enter parliament on their careers once inside the House of Commons. The contribution I make to knowledge is twofold. First, I build on existing literature in the field by developing a stand-alone classification of pre-parliamentary political experience that distinguishes between experience gained on the local level, for example as a local councillor, and experience gained on the national level, working for an MP or in the head office of a political party. Second, I empirically operationalise this classification and support it adopting quantitative research techniques. -

A musician with the Grande Ecurie. The Original name was Danican and earlier a Scottish origin with the name Duncan. Jean was nicknamed by Louis XIII because his oboe playing reminded the King of an Italian virtuoso oboist from Siena named Filidori. 2.Michael Danican (d.1659) Great Uncle of P oboist and with Ms. Hottetere modified the oboe so that the reed was held by the player’s lips. 3.Andrei Danican Philidor (1647-1730) P’s father known as ‘P the Elder’,oboist and crumhorn player. Member of the Grande Ecurie Military Band and later performed at the Court Royal Chapel under Louis XIV. 4. Jacques Danican Philidor (1657-1708) P’s father’s younger brother and known as ‘P the younger’. 5. Pierre Danican Philidor (1681-1731) Son of Jacques and a musician. 6.Andre Danican Philidor (1681-1728) Older brother of P. Founded the Concert Spirituel a public concert held in the Tuileries Palace 1725-1791. P. was born to his father’s second wife Elizabeth Roy whom he had wed in 1719 when she was 19 years old and he 72 and 79 when P. was born and he died 4 years later. A Beginner’s Guide to the Politics of the UK Introduction This is an attempt to produce an unbiased beginner’s guide to the politics of the United Kingdom. An education in the UK today does little to inform or educate you about politics today, and then you are expected to go out there and make an informed choice on how to vote. This guide is aimed to be an aide to those who are wondering how they should vote or starting to take part in debate. It is not a technical or academic guide and will not meet the requirement of anyone studying Politics at A Level or university, although it may be a good starting point for those new to the subject. I have not studied politics in an academic setting myself. However, I have encountered it in my studies of history, philosophy and current affairs, inspiring me to look further. Through my participation in debate and my extra research, I have gleaned a good working knowledge of modern politics in Britain. Here I set out that which I have learned, in the hope that you should find it helpful. In this guide, I discuss the following: Political Systems The Origins of Democracy Development of Democracy in the UK The Democratic Ideal, Constitutions and the Separation of Powers The UK Constitution Parliamentary Democracy in the UK The Political Spectrum in the UK Political Parties in the UK The Current Political Climate in the UK It is certainly possible to skip sections, but I recommend reading it all in order at least once. -

It is one of the oldest parts of the UK’s constitutional arrangements, with its origins dating back to at least the thirteenth century. The Privy Council advises the Monarch on the carrying out of her duties, including the exercise of the Royal Prerogative and other functions assigned to the Sovereign by Acts of Parliament. Although some of the Privy Council’s powers are ceremonial in nature, many relate to matters of constitutional importance. In most of these areas the advisory role of the Privy Council is a fiction, and the body is effectively a vehicle for executive decisions made by the Government which are then formally issued in the Queen’s name.
