It focuses on the public works that transformed Paris in the middle of the 19th century, and more specifically on Haussmann’s planning practice. From an epistolary exchange between property owners, Haussmann and the Minister of the Interior during Haussmann’s first years as Prefect of the Seine, the thesis draws out a political event: the playing out in a singular context of an opposition over a political practice predicated on equality. -

9 The beautiful skulls of Schiller and the Georgian girl Quantitative and aesthetic scaling of the races, 1770–1850 Robert J. Richards Isak Dinesen, in one of her gothic tales about art and memory, spins a story of a nobleman’s startling recognition of a prostitute he once loved and abandoned. He saw her likeness in the beauty of a young woman’s skull used by an artist friend. After we had discussed his pictures, and art in general, he said that he would show me the prettiest thing that he had in his studio. It was a skull from which he was drawing. He was keen to explain its rare beauty to me. “It is really,” he said, “the skull of a young woman [. .].” The white polished bone shone in the light of the lamp, so pure. And safe. In those few seconds I was taken back to my room [. .] with the silk fringes and the heavy curtains, on a rainy night of fifteen years before. (Dinesen 1991, 106‒107)1 The skulls pictured in Figure 9.1 have also been thought rare beauties and evocative of something more. On the left is the skull of a nameless, young Caucasian female from the Georgian region. Johann Friedrich Blumenbach, the great anatomist and naturalist, celebrated this skull, prizing it because of “the admirable beauty of its formation” (bewundernswerthen Schönheit seiner Bildung). He made the skull an aesthetic standard, and like the skull in Dinesen’s tale, it too recalled a significant history (Blumenbach 1802, no. 51). She was a young woman captured during the Russo-Turkish war (1787–1792) and died in prison; her dissected skull had been sent to Blumenbach in 1793 (Dougherty and Klatt 2006‒2015, IV, 256‒257). -

1 Historical Studies in Education / Revue d’histoire de l’éducation ARTICLES / ARTICLES Colonization, Education, and the Formation of Moral Character: Edward Gibbon Wakefield’s A Letter from Sydney Bruce Curtis Carleton University ABSTRacT Edward Gibbon Wakefield proposed a scheme of “systematic colonization” that he claimed would guarantee the formation of civilized moral character in settler societies at the same time as it reproduced imperial class relations. The scheme, which was first hatched after Wakefield read Robert Gourlay’s A Statistical Account of Upper Canada, inverted the dominant under- standing of the relation between school and society. Wakefield claimed that without systematic colonization, universal schooling would be dangerous and demoralizing. Wakefield intervened in contemporary debate about welfare reform and population growth, opposing attempts to enforce celibacy on poor women and arguing that free enjoyment of “animal liberty” made women both moral and beautiful. RÉSUMÉ Edward Gibbon Wakefield propose que son programme de « colonisation systématique » ga- rantirait la formation de colons au caractère moral et civilisé. Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. Although early modern theologians and polemicists widely declared religious conformists to be shameless apostates, when we examine specific cases in context it becomes apparent that most individuals found ways to positively rationalize and justify their respective actions. This fraught history continued to have long-term effects on England’s religious, political, and intellectual culture. -

Teague Abstract While the mass consumption of luxury items is oftentimes described as a factor leading the Third Estate to take action against the First and Second Estates in the buildup to the French Revolution, that spending is presented as little more than salt in the open wounds of a starving and ever-growing population that had been growing evermore destitute since the beginnings of the early modern era. However, the causes and contexts of the conspicuous consumption as practiced by the aristocracy reveal how they directly correlate to the social tensions that persisted throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries until they erupted in the 1790s. The isolation and the dictation of taste and style that Louis XIV commanded through Versailles and State-run luxury workshops became commonplace within a generation after the Fronde in which the nobles had engaged during the previous century. Versailles allowed the new generation of the aristocracy to be placated with petty privileges that developed out of the rigorous court etiquette, and their conspicuous consumption only increased as the need to compete with others at Court and those newly ennobled continued. This study examines a materialistic culture alongside its material culture, focusing on explaining the expenditures of the aristocracy without becoming enamored by the spectacle of wealth itself. The goods and services that the French aristocracy indulged in purchasing were not simply marks of luxury; they represented social ideals about order and privilege. -

Encounters on Education Volume 7, Fall 2006 pp. 113 - 130 Tocqueville and Lower Canadian Educational Networks Bruce Curtis Sociology and Anthropology, Carleton University, Canada ABSTRACT Educational history is commonly written as the history of institutions, pedagogical practices or individual educators. This article takes the trans-Atlantic networks of men involved in liberal political and educational reform in the early decades of the nineteenth century as its unit of analysis. In keeping with the author’s interest in education and politics in the British North American colony of Lower Canada, the network is anchored on the person of Alexis de Tocqueville, who visited the colony in 1831. De Tocqueville’s more or less direct connections to many of the men involved in colonial Canadian educational politics are detailed. Key words: de Tocqueville, liberalism, educational networks, monitorial schooling. RESUMEN La historia educativa se escribe comúnmente como la historia de las instituciones, de las prácticas pedagógicas o de los educadores individuales. Este artículo toma, como unidad de análisis, las redes transatlánticas formadas por hombres implicados en las reformas liberales políticas y educativas durante las primeras décadas del siglo XIX. En sintonía con el interés del autor en la educación y la política en la colonia Británico Norteamericana de Lower Canadá, la red se apoya en la persona de Alexis de Tocqueville, que visitó la colonia en 1831. In particular, this study investigates the use of nineteenth and twentieth century established gesture in the Shakespearean film adaptations from 1899-1922. The gestures described and illustrated by published gesture manuals are juxtaposed with at least one leading actor from each film. The research involves films from the experimental phase (1899-1907), the transitional phase (1908-1913), and the feature film phase (1912-1922). Specifically, the films are: King John (1899), Le Duel d'Hamlet (1900), La Diable et la Statue (1901), Duel Scene from Macbeth (1905), The Taming of the Shrew (1908), The Tempest (1908), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1909), Il Mercante di Venezia (1910), Re Lear (1910), Romeo Turns Bandit (1910), Twelfth Night (1910), A Winter's Tale (1910), Desdemona (1911), Richard III (1911), The Life and Death of King Richard III (1912), Romeo e Giulietta (1912), Cymbeline (1913), Hamlet (1913), King Lear (1916), Hamlet: Drama of Vengeance (1920), and Othello (1922). Henry Fox’s Drafts of Lord Hardwicke’s Speech in the Lords’ Debate on the Bill on Clandestine Marriages, 6 June 1753: A Striving for Accuracy Clyve Jones Before Hansard began publication in the early nineteenth century, the first regular and sustained reports of debates in Parliament were inaugurated in 1711 by Abel Boyer in his monthly Political State of Great Britain. In the middle of the eighteenth century the reporting of debates was forbidden by resolutions of both Houses, and such printed debates that have survived were usually written by reporters who had not heard them. Later on after 1774, when the prohibition of strangers was relaxed, there was an unprecedented printing of debates and various series of compilations were published. Before Boyer, however, the only records of debates in either the Commons or the Lords were personal ones taken by members or visitors to Parliament.1 And even after the first printing of debates by Boyer, many people, particularly those in the political elite, continued to obtain their Parliamentary information from personal accounts. These took various forms: notes taken in the Houses (sometimes written up afterwards into a more polished account, often in the form of a journal or diary, in which speeches appear to be written out in full),2 letters or parts of letters, separates (i.e., single or multiple sheets, often differing little from notes taken in the Parliament, and often concentrating on specific issues), and speeches (sometimes published, or circulated in manuscript). Often these reports consisted of lists of speakers followed by a summary of the arguments used, and occasionally they might include, in part, verbatim accounts of debates (or, at least, what look like verbatim accounts of speeches); even rarer were reports which were (or looked like) full verbatim accounts of a debate. -

Significance In press, , June 2020 Galton’s Gleam: Visual Thinking & Graphic Discoveries Michael Friendly & Howard Wainer If I can't picture it, I can't understand it. --- Albert Einstein magine a scene at a recent restaurant meal with family and friends. Close your eyes. How vividly can you see the table, the restaurant setting in your mind’s eye? What was your server wearing? Do I you have images of the sequence of dishes? For some people, this is easy and natural; others can remember many details, but they can’t replay the scene in mental images. Discussions of the ability to construct and remember such images are sometimes categorized under such headings as “inner vision”, “graphic communication”, or “visual insight”. More evocatively, in the context of scientific discovery, such images might be called “a gleam in the mind’s eye,” something that Einstein evokes in our opening quote: visual understanding of some phenomenon better understood than in tables or words. In this account we focus on some particularly interesting gleams that originate with Francis Galton Specifically, we highlight Galton’s initial contributions to the modern science of mental imagery, followed by some of the remarkable discoveries he made using his own visualization abilities. Galton’s contributions to science The Victorian polymath Sir Francis Galton was among the most dominant scientific and intellectual figures in Victorian England (Brookes, 2004; Bulmer, 2003). He made important contributions in many areas: biology and genetics (studies of inheritance, twin studies), forensic science (fingerprints), geography (exploration of Africa), meteorology (weather maps), psychology and cognitive science (word associations, mental imagery, standardized questionnaires).
