CLIMBING FEDERATION PEAK, SOUTH WEST TASMANIA Macquarie (University) Mountaineering Club trip 1972 By Barbara Cameron Smith June 5, 2014 Our anti clockwise route towards and up Federation Peak is depicted in orange above, with the exception of our detour off the loop to climb Burgess Bluff. We subsequently camped at Pineapple Flat, scrub bashed our way to Mount Picton, and eventually walked out to Blakes Opening along an unexpectedly civilized track. Map credit: Bill Filson 7 January 1972 We packed all our gear and then went shopping. We expect to be out for 7-10 days, and after packing the necessary food and excess, the food bill tallied 26 dollars for four, quite a lot of money. We went to local camping stores and got some extra equipment, then called in to chat with a few guys who could tell us something about the walk. We repacked everything after a counter lunch in a pub and off we went. We walked quite a way out of the main street of Hobart. Greg and I started hitching and were lucky, getting a lift with a guy who was going camping himself. I guess I was rather forward but I asked him if he’d mind picking up our two friends who were on the road already. He didn’t seem to mind, so we were all driven down to Geeveston. Had a few refreshments there and left details at the police station and gear at the council chambers. It was rather late to get a lift, it being 4.30 pm, but a local housewife drove all of us a few miles out of town. -

During the Late Wisconsin, icecap and outlet glacier systems developed on the West Coast Range and on the Central Plateau ofTasmania. Local cirque and valley glaciers occurred in many other mountain areas of southwestern Tasmania. Criteria are outlined that enable Late Wisconsin and older glacial landforms and deposits to be distinguished. Radiocarbon dates show Late Wisconsin ice developed after 26-25 ka BP, attained its maximum extent c. 19 ka BP, and disappeared from the highest cirques before 10 ka BP. Important Late Wisconsin age glacial landforms and deposits of the West Coast Range, north-central and south-central Tasmania are described. Late Wisconsin ice was less extensive than ice formed during middle and earlier Pleistocene glaciations. Late Wisconsin snowline altitudes, glaciological conditions and palaeodimatic conditions are outlined. Key Words: glaciation, Tasmania, Late Wisconsin, snowline altitude, palaeoclimate. -

WORLD HERITAGE NOMINATION - IUCN S07: TASMANIAN WILDERNESS (Revision to existing Property inscribed in 1982) Summary prepared by IUCN (April 1989) based on the original nomination submitted by the Government of Australia. This original and all documents presented in support of this nomination will be available for consultation at the meeting of the Bureau and the Committee. Note: In the light of the Bureau's concurrence with proposals to further extend the nominated site, the State Party's nomination of 1,374,000 ha in total, further revised in September 1989, is discussed in the IUCN Technical Evaluation. 1. LOCATION Comprises a contiguous network of reserved lands that extends over much of south-western Tasmania. including five national parks (Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair, Franklin-Lower Gordon Wild Rivers, Southwest, Walls of Jerusalem and Hartz Mountains), four state reserves (Devils Gullet, Marakoopa Cave, Exit Cave and Port Davey) and part of Liffey Falls State Reserve, four conservation areas (Central Plateau, Oakleigh Creek, Southwest and St. Clair Lagoon), and"a number of protected areas, forest reserves as well as land verted in the Hydro-Electric Commission. Several outliers are included in the nominated area: Sarah Island Historic Site .in Macquarie Harbour; and lIe du Golfe, De Witt Island, Flat Witch Island and Maatsukyer Island off the south coast of Tasmania. There have been major changes in the fire regime of southwestern Tasmania over the past 170 years. The fire regime has changed from an Aboriginal fire regime of frequent low-intensity fires in buttongrass moorland (mostly in spring and autumn) with only the occasional high-intensity forest fire, to the early European fire regime of frequent high-intensity fires in all vegetation types, to a regime of low to medium intensity buttongrass moorland fires and finally to the current regime of few fires. These changes in the fire regime resulted in major impacts to the region's fire-sensitive vegetation types during the early European period, while the current low fire frequency across much of southwestern Tasmania has resulted in a large proportion of the region's fire-adapted buttongrass moorland being classified as old-growth. These extensive areas of old-growth buttongrass moorland mean that the potential for another large-scale ecologically damaging wildfire is high and, to avoid this, it would be better to re-introduce a regime oflow-intensity fires into the region. Geological Survey Of!ic,e, 26tli June, 1860. Sm, I HAVE the honor to forward you an account of the exploration of the Western Country, conducted recently by myself according to your instructions; and to assist you in compre hending the physical structure and nature of the country explored, as well as the various routes pursued by the Expedition, I have prepared the accompanying Map, which embraces the whole of the country visited, and upon which, in addition to the topographical information a_cquired, I have expressed the geologi9al structure by the assistance of distinguishing colours. I have found it convenient to distribute the information obtained under several headings. In the first section of the Report, which is in the form of a brief narrative, I have confined myself to a g·eneral description of the progress of the Expedition, of the country visited, and of the steps taken for the purpose of testing its reput_ed richness in auriferous deposits. The second is devoted to a sketch of the geological structure of the district, and to the con sideration of its mineral capabilities; while, in the last, I have appended a few general remarks upon those portions which are available for settlement, together with meteorological tables which may be of interest as furnishing some information as to the nature of its clim'ate. Ben Lomond National Park Management Plan 1998 Parks and Wildlife Service DepartmentDepartment of Primaryof Environment Industries, Waterand Land and Management Environment Ben Lomond National Park - Management Plan, 1998 BEN LOMOND NATIONAL PARK MANAGEMENT PLAN 1998 This Management Plan for the Ben Lomond National Park has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of part IV of the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1970. A draft of this plan was released for public comment in accordance with statutory requirements from 7 June 1997 until 19 September 1997. This plan is a modified version of that draft, having been varied to take account of public input during that period and the views of the National Parks and Wildlife Advisory Council. Unless otherwise specified, this plan adopts the interpretation of terms given in Section 3 of the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1970. The term “Minister” when used in the plan means the Minister administering the Act. The term “Park” refers to the Ben Lomond National Park. In accordance with Section 23(2) of the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1970, the managing authority for the Park, in this case the Director of National Parks and Wildlife, shall carry out his or her duties in relation to the Park for the purpose of giving effect to, and in accordance with the provisions of, this Management Plan. The position of Director is held by the Director, Parks and Wildlife Service, Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment. In accordance with Section 23(2) of the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1970, and with Section 6 and Section 23(5) of the Ben Lomond Skifield Management Authority Act 1995, the managing authority for the Skifield Development Area within the Park, the Ben Lomond Skifield Management Authority, shall carry out its duties in relation to that portion of the Park within the Skifield Development Area for the purposes of giving effect to, and in accordance with the provisions of, this Management Plan.
