(Martial, Epigrams, II, 86) ii ABSTRACT The research detailed in this thesis explores the largely uncharted territory represented by the Hawthornden manuscripts (Edinburgh, National Library of Scotland, MSS 2063-67) of William Fowler, Scottish courtier in Edinburgh and London and attached to the court of Queen Anna of Denmark between 1590 and 1612. The research has focused on material evidence of scribal culture, with the aim of clarifying issues of localization of specific texts and typologies of texts in relation to their social, literary and more broadly cultural background. Based on the fragmentary evidence in the Hawthornden manuscript, this project engages in the exploration of one of the “cultural places of the European Renaissance”, focusing on the early Stuart courtly establishment in the first decade of the seventeenth century. The aim is, on the one hand, to close a series of scholarly gaps in the field of manuscript-based studies of the Scottish Jacobean Renaissance, and on the other, to increase our knowledge of British Jacobean cultural life in the broader sense of the word. It provides the first sustained analyses of four seventeenth-century romances – Penardo and Laissa (1615) and Prince Robert (1615), both by Patrick Gordon, Sheretine and Mariana (1622) by Patrick Hannay and Calanthrop and Lucilla (1626) by John Kennedy – and their trajectory within a Scottish tradition of writing that was engaged in a fundamental search for its ideal national hero. Over the course of this research, a series of intriguing connections and networks began to emerge which illuminated an active and diverse community of ‘martial writers’ from whom this corpus of texts were conceived. -

The Lutheran Anna of Denmark (1574–1619) was one of those exceptionally well-placed early modern women. A member of the dynastic houses of Oldenburg and Stuart, she was daughter, sister, wife, and mother of kings, and she also retained close connections to a number of other royal and ducal houses in Europe. Her ancestral dynastic links, coupled with the marriages of her siblings, extended her kinship network beyond her natal kingdom of Denmark-Norway and its territories of Schleswig, Holstein, Stormarn, and Dithmarschen, to include Brandenburg, Braunschweig- Lüneburg, Dresden, Holstein-Gottorf, Mecklenburg-Güstrow, and Electoral Saxony. With her marriage to King James VI (1566–1625) in 1589, Anna of Denmark moved to Scotland, and around 1592, or perhaps 1600, she converted to Catholicism. -

Moreover, it represents the only cohesive study of the events that formed the foundation of the diplomatic policies and practices of the first ruler of the Three Kingdoms. Whilst extensive research has been conducted on the British and English aspects of James VI & I’s diplomatic activities, very little work has been done on James’s foreign policies prior to his accession to the English throne. James VI ruled Scotland for almost twenty years before he took on the additional role of King of England and Ireland. It was in his homeland that James developed and refined his diplomatic skills, and built the relationships with foreign powers that would continue throughout his life. James’s pre-1603 relationships with Denmark-Norway, France, Spain, the Papacy, the German and Italian states, the Spanish Netherlands and the United Provinces all influenced his later ‘British’ policies, and it is only through a study such as this that their effects can be fully understood. -

Background 2.1 The City Art Centre’s fine art collection includes works dating from the 17th century to the present day. Portraiture is an important aspect of the collection, both in terms of providing visual historical records of people and events, and also demonstrating how artistic approaches to portraiture have changed in Scotland over the centuries. Although he had a relatively short career, he enjoyed considerable fame during his lifetime and exerted a significant influence on subsequent generations of artists. He is widely considered to be a founding father of the Scottish school of portraiture, leading the way for artists like Allan Ramsay and Henry Raeburn. -
