VODAFONE McLAREN MERCEDES TEAM UNVEILED IN VALENCIA Monday 15th January 2007, Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias, Valencia, Spain: Vodafone McLaren Mercedes race drivers Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton will drive through the streets of Valencia in their Formula 1 cars later today to mark the start of an exciting new era for the team. The event heralds the launch of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team, which Vodafone is joining as Title Sponsor and Official Mobile Partner. Fernando and Lewis, who form one of the youngest driver line-ups in the history of the sport, will unveil the new livery to an expected crowd of more than 150,000 on a bespoke circuit around the Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias in two MP4-21 race cars. This will be followed by the unveiling of the 2007 car, the MP4-22, which Fernando and Lewis will use to contest this year's Formula 1 World Championship. The 2007 challengers will conduct a shakedown test at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo, Valencia, on Wednesday 17th January. The intensive pre-season testing programme will then commence on Wednesday 24th January at the same track. Pedro de la Rosa and Gary Paffett join Fernando and Lewis to complete the driver line-up. Pedro and Gary, who are starting their fifth and second years with the team respectively, will continue to support the ongoing technical development of the MP4-22 package during the course of the year alongside Fernando and Lewis. “This is a fantastic day for me - I am really proud to be introducing myself as a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver in my home country, and of course to help present my new team to the Spanish fans,” said double World Champion Fernando. -

Tyre Strategy Was at the Forefront of the Action at the Monaco Grand Prix
VETTEL CLAIMS MONACO VICTORY AFTER THRILLING THREE-WAY FIGHT Monaco, May 29th 2011 - Tyre strategy was at the forefront of the action at the Monaco Grand Prix, with a three-way fight between Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull Racing), Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) and Jenson Button (McLaren), who were separated by less than a second with only 15 laps to go. Such was the pace of the leading trio that they pulled away from the fourth-placed man by nearly a minute. The top three all employed completely different race strategies: Vettel stopped once, moving from the PZero Red supersofts to the PZero Yellow softs on lap 16 and making his final set of soft tyres last for 56 laps. Alonso chose a two-stop strategy, starting on the supersoft before moving onto two sets of soft tyres, with his last stop on lap 34. Button, meanwhile, went for a sprint strategy by taking three stops. While there was a wide diversity of strategies, the top three remained in close contact at a race where Pirelli’s supersoft was making its competition debut. As the race entered its final 10 laps, the leading trio was still very close in a thrilling fight for supremacy, before an accident caused a safety car period followed by a red flag with just six laps left to go. As the rules allow teams to work on the cars during a suspended race, the drivers were allowed to change tyres before the race resumed in a final sprint to the finish. The top three all chose Pirelli’s PZero Red supersoft tyres for the run to the flag, which ended with Vettel’s first win in Monaco. -

2011 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX PIRELLI COMES HOME WITH P ZERO MEDIUM AND SOFT TYRES Milan, September 5th 2011 WHAT’S THE STORY? The Italian Grand Prix at Monza is one of the most historic and eagerly anticipated races of the year for Pirelli, located in parkland just half an hour from the Italian firm’s headquarters to the north of Milan. As well as a track that has been integral to Pirelli’s motorsport history, Monza is currently one of the fastest tracks on the calendar with an average speed in the region of 250kph, providing a huge challenge for tyres, drivers and engineers. Pirelli will bring the P Zero White medium tyres and P Zero Yellow soft tyres to Monza, which are designed to cope with the demands of Monza’s high-speed layout and provide plenty of scope for the teams to use different tyre strategies. With the historic circuit having been inaugurated in 1922, this year marks the 82nd Italian Grand Prix and the 61st to be held at Monza. Pirelli has claimed six victories at home, back in the 1950s, when the circuit was best-known for its high-speed banking, which still stands as a tourist attraction today. The modern track has been extensively modified over the years but it is still hard to find perfect traction under acceleration and braking as the teams run low downforce in order to maximise their top speed on the flat-out straights. There are also some high kerbs on the chicanes that put huge lateral loads through the tyres, adding to the gruelling workout that the rubber receives over the 53 laps of the race. -

They are widely used in sports competitions consisting of multiple contests. We study the tradeoff between two risks in this setting: (1) the threat of early clinch when the title has been clinched before the last contest(s) of the com- petition take place; (2) the danger of winning the competition without finishing first in any contest. In particular, four historical points scoring systems of the Formula One World Championship are compared with the family of geometric scoring rules that has favourable axiomatic properties. The Izmit facility, which this year celebrates 50 years’ activity, has housed the Motorsport tyre production line since 2007 and, in synergy with the Research and Development centre in Milan, will become the heart of Pirelli’s Formula One activities. Producing 8 million tyres for cars, trucks and motorsport each year, Izmit is the Pirelli factory with the greatest unit output of all. The group has invested 140 million euros there over the last 10 years and plans to invest a further 30 million euros in 2011 to support expansion in Turkey and nearby emerging markets. 2011 CANADIAN GRAND PRIX PIRELLI’S PZERO RED SUPERSOFT BACK IN ACTION Milan, June 6th 2011 WHAT’S THE STORY? Pirelli’s new supersoft tyre made a thrilling debut in Monaco and now the same two nominations return for the Canadian Grand Prix: the PZero Red supersoft tyre and the harder PZero Yellow tyre. Like Monaco, Canada is a semi-permanent facility but the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is faster with a low-grip surface: two parameters that have a far-reaching effect on tyre wear. There are also areas of heavy braking and maximum traction, which are also important parameters when it comes to tyre behaviour. Consequently long stints of more than 50 laps on the PZero tyres, as seen in Monaco, are unlikely and instead there will be a return to wheel-to-wheel sprint racing. Tyre wear is a critical factor at the Montreal circuit, traditionally making Canada one of the most entertaining races of the year. Since its inauguration in 1978, the track has undergone a number of changes, notably some resurfacing before last year’s grand prix and the addition of some new and higher kerbs in 2005: both of which influence the way that the tyres behave. With the track hosting only two major races per season – Formula One and NASCAR – there is a marked evolution in terms of grip over the course of the weekend as more rubber gets laid down on the surface. On Friday, drivers will be given two additional sets of Pirelli’s new medium compound slicks to evaluate for the future during the two free practice sessions.
