2011 Italian Grand Prix 2011 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX PIRELLI COMES HOME WITH P ZERO MEDIUM AND SOFT TYRES Milan, September 5th 2011 WHAT’S THE STORY? The Italian Grand Prix at Monza is one of the most historic and eagerly anticipated races of the year for Pirelli, located in parkland just half an hour from the Italian firm’s headquarters to the north of Milan. As well as a track that has been integral to Pirelli’s motorsport history, Monza is currently one of the fastest tracks on the calendar with an average speed in the region of 250kph, providing a huge challenge for tyres, drivers and engineers. Pirelli will bring the P Zero White medium tyres and P Zero Yellow soft tyres to Monza, which are designed to cope with the demands of Monza’s high-speed layout and provide plenty of scope for the teams to use different tyre strategies. With the historic circuit having been inaugurated in 1922, this year marks the 82nd Italian Grand Prix and the 61st to be held at Monza. Pirelli has claimed six victories at home, back in the 1950s, when the circuit was best-known for its high-speed banking, which still stands as a tourist attraction today. The modern track has been extensively modified over the years but it is still hard to find perfect traction under acceleration and braking as the teams run low downforce in order to maximise their top speed on the flat-out straights. There are also some high kerbs on the chicanes that put huge lateral loads through the tyres, adding to the gruelling workout that the rubber receives over the 53 laps of the race. Despite this being one of the most demanding tracks of the year, where the contact patch of the tyres on the straight can increase to three times its size when stationary due to downforce, between two and three pit stops are expected for the leading runners as usual. PIRELLI’S MOTORSPORT DIRECTOR SAYS: Paul Hembery: “Monza is obviously a very important race for us, both from a technical and a company point of view. We’re all looking forward to competing at home, with the championship reaching a crucial point in the season. On a rapid circuit like Monza the tyre strategy is sure to be vital, as it’s going to be hard to make up any time lost in the pits with the cars at full throttle for so much of the time. We expect to see a difference of about a second per lap between the soft and the medium tyre, but we’ll only know for sure once the cars start running in free practice. The versatility of the tyre is going to be a key element, as the rubber will have to cope with a wide range of conditions this weekend. It’s a big challenge as always, but at the same time we’re very much looking forward to being able to showcase the very best of Italian technology and know-how at home in Italy.” THE MEN BEHIND THE STEERING WHEEL SAY: Fernando Alonso (Ferrari): “Monza is a very special race for every driver: it is the fastest circuit on the World Championship and driving there gives you an extraordinary feeling. It is also very special for emotional reasons, especially if you are a Scuderia Ferrari driver as I experienced for the first time last year. Winning in Monza is incredible: winning there driving a red car is even more incredible. Being on the podium, seeing thousands of fans below you wearing red shirts and waving red flags is simply an overwhelming emotion. Our aim this year is the same as last year: to win the race. We are aware that we have the potential to achieve our objective but we also know that our opponents are very strong. I am sure that we will have a very exciting race, as we have seen many times so far this season already. The return of Pirelli in F1 has brought an increase to the show, which was one of the targets set at the beginning of the year, so we have to thank them for this – and what better occasion than their home race?” TECHNICAL NOTES: * Monza was one of the testing venues for Pirelli’s build-up to its inaugural season in Formula One. * At Monza the cars run the lowest downforce of the year in order to eliminate drag. A typical aerodynamic package for Monza will generate about 15% less downforce than is used in Spa, the venue of the last race. This has a profound effect on the tyres, allowing them to slide more. * Suspension is another area of set-up for Monza that impacts on the tyres. The low downforce means that the cars rely heavily on mechanical grip, so the suspension set-up is designed to ensure the best possible traction under acceleration and braking, while allowing the drivers to attack the chicanes. * Monza is a race that made history for this year’s championship leader Sebastian Vettel. The German became the youngest ever Grand Prix race winner by nearly a year after winning the 2008 Italian Grand Prix aged 21 years and 73 days. Fernando Alonso is second; winning the 2003 Hungarian Grand Prix aged 22 years and 26 days. No better place then, for Pirelli to announce ithe first-ever road tyre directly derived from Formula One. Among the guests in attendance at the P Zero Silver presentation held in a spectacular hangar close Pirelli‟s HQ in Milan were Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver Jenson Button and Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali. “I think the tyre is key to the performance of a car,” said Button at the event. “I personally feel that Pirelli has done a great job in bringing so many different types of tyre that work in so many different scenarios. It‟s been fantastic working with Pirelli and I really enjoy the relationship we have. It‟s definitely been more fun this year. If you look at the amount of overtaking we have now, it not all down to the Drag Reduction System and the KERS. A lot of it is down to the tyres. Formula One is in a great place right now; the most competitive it‟s been since I‟ve been involved in the sport.” The 5.793-kilometre lap of Monza is sure to be even quicker this year thanks to an extensive DRS zone during qualifying that covers 74% of the lap. The higher the speed, the more energy is transmitted through the hard-working tyres. We take a closer look at exactly what the rubber goes through during a typical lap of Monza… THE TRACK After building up speed, the drivers are hard on the brakes for the first corner, the Variante del Rettifilio, shedding 250kph in about three seconds. The drivers are travelling at more than 300kph on bumpy asphalt, which makes it hard to hold the ideal line under braking. The energy dissipated helps to maximise the grip available but generates temperatures on the tyre tread that peak at 150 degrees. One of the key corners, and a good place to overtake, is Roggia. Taking the ideal line, the car uses a lot of the kerbing, putting a huge amount of stress on the carcass of each tyre. While it may not look so dramatic from the outside, the reality is that the drivers and cars really feel the impact. The internal structure of the tyre is particularly rigid, reducing the risk of sliding and ensuring the maximum driving precision. Another famous part of the track is the Variante Ascari: part of a sequence of corners taken at high speed. On the entry to the corner, the tyre determines how the car turns in and the amount of grip it can generate through the corners.

    VETTEL CLAIMS MONACO VICTORY AFTER THRILLING THREE-WAY FIGHT Monaco, May 29th 2011 - Tyre strategy was at the forefront of the action at the Monaco Grand Prix, with a three-way fight between Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull Racing), Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) and Jenson Button (McLaren), who were separated by less than a second with only 15 laps to go. Such was the pace of the leading trio that they pulled away from the fourth-placed man by nearly a minute. The top three all employed completely different race strategies: Vettel stopped once, moving from the PZero Red supersofts to the PZero Yellow softs on lap 16 and making his final set of soft tyres last for 56 laps. Alonso chose a two-stop strategy, starting on the supersoft before moving onto two sets of soft tyres, with his last stop on lap 34. Button, meanwhile, went for a sprint strategy by taking three stops. While there was a wide diversity of strategies, the top three remained in close contact at a race where Pirelli’s supersoft was making its competition debut. As the race entered its final 10 laps, the leading trio was still very close in a thrilling fight for supremacy, before an accident caused a safety car period followed by a red flag with just six laps left to go. As the rules allow teams to work on the cars during a suspended race, the drivers were allowed to change tyres before the race resumed in a final sprint to the finish. The top three all chose Pirelli’s PZero Red supersoft tyres for the run to the flag, which ended with Vettel’s first win in Monaco.

Pirelli’s new supersoft tyre made a thrilling debut in Monaco and now the same two nominations return for the Canadian Grand Prix: the PZero Red supersoft tyre and the harder PZero Yellow tyre. Like Monaco, Canada is a semi-permanent facility but the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is faster with a low-grip surface: two parameters that have a far-reaching effect on tyre wear. There are also areas of heavy braking and maximum traction, which are also important parameters when it comes to tyre behaviour. Consequently long stints of more than 50 laps on the PZero tyres, as seen in Monaco, are unlikely and instead there will be a return to wheel-to-wheel sprint racing. Tyre wear is a critical factor at the Montreal circuit, traditionally making Canada one of the most entertaining races of the year. Since its inauguration in 1978, the track has undergone a number of changes, notably some resurfacing before last year’s grand prix and the addition of some new and higher kerbs in 2005: both of which influence the way that the tyres behave. With the track hosting only two major races per season – Formula One and NASCAR – there is a marked evolution in terms of grip over the course of the weekend as more rubber gets laid down on the surface.     2014 Spanish Grand Prix – Race TWO PIT STOPS ONLY ON ONE OF THE MOST CHALLENGING CIRCUITS OF THE YEAR TYRE STRATEGIES DECIDE THE PODIUM PLACES AFTER A THRILLING BATTLE TWO-DAY TEST BEGINS ON TUESDAY: FOUR TEAMS TO TEST FOR PIRELLI Barcelona, May 11, 2014 – Barcelona is renowned for being one of the most demanding tracks on tyres of the entire year, but eight of the top 10 finishers all completed the 66- lap grand prix with just two stops. Last year, the race winner stopped four times in Barcelona, underlining the further improvements and increased durability built into Pirelli’s Formula One tyres this season. This has led to lower levels of wear, degradation and ‘marbles’ on the track, without compromising performance. Tyre strategy was instrumental to the Spanish Grand Prix, with Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton claiming his fourth consecutive win to move into the lead of the drivers championship. The Englishman, who went on a medium-medium-hard strategy from pole, beat his team mate Nico Rosberg by just six tenths of a second, who chose a medium-hard-medium strategy. The two strategies ensured a thrilling wheel-to-wheel battle as Rosberg was able to take advantage of his newer and faster tyres at the end of the race. Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel started from 15th on the grid but finished fourth with a three- stop sprint strategy, running mostly on the faster medium tyre and setting fastest lap.
