Or Four Short (Hi)Stories of a 19Th Century Greek-European Musical or Four short (hi)stories of a 19th century Greek-European musical interaction, and the cultural outcomes thereof. A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Artemis Ignatidou College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences Brunel University London 2017 2 Abstract The thesis investigates the impact of western art music (‘classical’) upon the construction of Greek-European identity in the 19th century. Through the examination of institutions such as the Theatre of Athens that hosted the Italian opera for the better part of the 19th century, the Conservatory of Athens (1873), the Conservatory of Thessaloniki (1914), various 19th century literary societies, press content, scores, publications on music, and state regulations on education, the thesis utilizes both musical, as well as extra-musical material to construct a cultural and social history of Greece’s understanding of the ‘European’ in relation to local Greek society through music between 1840 and 1914. At the same time, it highlights the importance of transnational institutional and interpersonal musical networks between Greece and Europe (mainly England, France, and Germany), to demonstrate how political and aesthetic preferences influenced long-term policy, cultural practice, and musical tradition. While examining the 19th century diplomatic, political, and cultural practices of the expanding 19th century Greek Kingdom, the thesis traces the development of western musical taste and practice in Balkan Greece in relation to the local modernizing society. It highlights the importance of local and European artistic agents and networks, identifies the tension between the projection of European identity and raw acoustic divergence, argues for about the contribution of music to the construction of Greek-European identity, and examines the cultural and political negotiations about the conflicting relationship between Byzantine-Hellenic-European-Modern Greek, as expressed through music and debates on music. Last but foremost, this goes to this family of mine: Margarita, George, and Aristotelis who, in all possible ways, contributed to what I am today. 5 Introduction In 1901 madness befell the city of Athens: people suddenly went mute and, in night entertainment, they would jump on their feet, mouth shut, dance a little bit and sit back down. Whatever happened to song? “Yes! Without Song! But still, song is the only demonstration of gaiety. This purported entertainment without song is truly a monstrous thing.”1 This plague of songless night entertainment was the outcome of European musical influence upon Greece, the newspaper Kerē [Times] explained. In European dances people twirled fast around the room in mixed couples, and with all the sweat and effort, instrumental music was the only option. So why were the Greeks, whose tradition was one of cyclical dance and song, emulating this behaviour and spent their nights “sitting hunched until midnight, when they had a little tea and then [took] a round of European dance without singing?”2 The newspaper was raising an issue reflecting the anxiety of part of society for the alteration of intimate Greek cultural characteristics, here dance and song, and their replacement by alien traditions, twirls and tea. Throughout the 19th century there was a widespread belief in Greece that something was off with the nation’s music. For some it was a matter of form, for others a matter of history. But for most participants in the art and the discussions about the art, it was the awareness of a musical displacement

    SOPHIA DENISSI The Greek Enlightenment and the Changing Cultural Status of Women In 1856 Andreas Laskaratos, one of the most liberal authors of his time, writes: There is no doubt that we took a giant step in allowing our women learning. This step reveals that a revolution took place in the spirit; a revolution which has taken our minds away from the road of backwardness and has led them to the road of progress. Though this transmission has not received any attention yet, it constitutes one of these events that will leave its trace in the history of the human spirit.1 Laskaratos is quite correct in talking about a revolution since the decision to accept women's education at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries was indeed a revolutionary act if we consider the state of Greek women who had been living in absolute ignorance and seclusion that prevailed throughout the years of the Ottoman occupation. What caused this revolution? What made Greek men, or rather a progressive minority at first, still subjects of the Ottoman Empire concede the right to education and even to a public voice for women? The answer will be revealed to us by taking a close look at the first educated Greek women who managed to break the traditional silence imposed upon their sex by patriarchal culture and make their presence felt in the male world. We can distinguish two main groups among the first educated Greek women; those coming from the aristocratic circle of the Phanariots and those coming from the circle of progressive men of letters.

The inscription was found on the island in 1959.1 The editions on which my comments will be based are the one by Ch. Roueché and S. Sher- win-White (1985) and the most recent one by K. Jeppesen (1989). We have to bear in mind the fact that the numbering of lines is different in the two editions, as the gap between the covering letter of Anaxarchus and the letter of Ikadion is considered a line by Jeppesen, and is numbered (line 7 in his edition). Roueché and Sherwin-White do not number the gap. In the following references, the numbers are those of the lines in the two editions. The edition by Roueché and Sherwin-White will be referred to as Chiron, whereas the one by Jeppesen as «Jeppesen ’89». Representative of the Enlightenment, Moesiodax encouraged the natural sciences and regarded the Neo-Aristotelianism that prevailed in the Balkan scholarship as the main source of stagnation of knowledge in the Ottoman Empire. Since they have long been subject to influences from Western Europe, the Ionian Islands form a separate historic and cultural unit than that of continental Greece. The region is divided administratively into four prefectures (Corfu, Lefkada, Kefallinia and Zakinthos) and comprises the islands of Kerkira (Corfu), Zakinthos, Cephalonia (Kefallinia), Lefkada, Ithaca (Ithaki), Paxi, and a number of smaller islands. The Ionian Islands are the sunniest part of Greece, but the southerly winds bring abundant rainfall. The region is noted for its natural beauty, its long history, and cultural tradition. It is also well placed geographically, since it is close to both mainland Greece and Western Europe and thus forms a convenient stepping-stone, particularly for passenger traffic between Greece and the West. These factors have favored the continuous development of tourism, which has become the most dynamic branch of the region’s economy. Island of Corfu CORFU MAP Corfu is located in the northwest part of Greece, with a size of 593 km2 and a costline, which spans for 217 km, is the largest of the Ionian Islands. The principal city of the island and seat of the municipality is also named Corfu, after the island’s name, with a population of 32,000 (2011 census) inhabitants. Currently, according to real estate agents, foreign nationals who permanently reside on Corfu are estimated at 18,000 individuals.
